Monkeying Around

f n a… I am already crawling out of my skin… and I am not worried about my numbers all that much, as my bench coach stated ‘this is a meet for you to get a good workout in, and to show a few others how it is done’… meaning that it is unsanctioned, only $20 meet fees, etc. But still, I am just itchin already, and it is only Tuesday night…

BTW Meat, hear you were enjoying the USAPL raw nats… reviews, thoughts?

my buddy Brent (modi) did awesome DESPITE the meet. There are MANY reasons why i wouldn’t compete in that Fed. I don’t want to bash them since there are some that like it. I’ll PM you with my thoughts:)

I agree with everything you said… PMd back my thoughts.

Same cardio crap as yesterday. Then practised set up on bench. Then outta there.

20 minutes elliptical 15 bike, then BSing x 1000

Meet report:

Went Push only;

Opener 435 miss
Attempt 2 435 easy
Attept 3 455 good

More details to follow, not the day I planned but they can’t always be. Took the best bench in all classes minus 275+. Already strategizing for next time. Off to eat chineese, drink cocktails.

half in the bag report:

met John and Mike for weigh ins; actually got there a little before them and saw the ‘meet’ being assembled from gym equipment upstairs. Already my adreneline was flowing a little too much, and so was that nagging little creep on my right shoulder saying ‘it ain’t your day’.

Finally did weigh ins, came in at upper 260s, then checked out what we would be lifting with. Bench was one of the shittiest I have seen in years, made by Life Fitness, it had that seperation between lower and upper back like it was meant to be an adjustable bench, but it wasn’t.

And the pad was only like a 1/3 inch. Oh well. The bar was a great squat bar, but they were going to use if for all three. Seriously it was a nice power bar, but my meat hooks only made it 3/4 of the way around. Not right for pulling. Between that and my nervese and my recent injury history I decided to ‘pull’ out of the deadlift portion, and just do the bench.

The three of us traveled about 10 minutes to an iHop. Service was shitty, and I had the appetive of Gweneth Paltrow. I downed some eggs and pancakes, but then the rest of the crew was taking their time. I kinda snapped when it was 9:40, Mike finished up his cakes, John paid the bill, and we headed back to the Y.

Made it just in time for some quick, shitty warm ups. Did 135 x 20, 225 x 15, 315 x 3, and 365 x 1. Went back and got our shirts on and hit the floor, the benching was already going. If your track my log I am a little too used to getting one warm up in the shirt at 405, but oh well.

After cuttting a few pounds my shirt was way loose, more so than usual, I actually put it on and took it off myself today. First attempt at 435 lost the groove, bar wandered over my head. Second attempt, about 20 minutes later, it sailed up. Deciding to call it a day, and a meet PR, got 455 w/some struggle. Oh well. Should have been easy, was hoping for closer to 5, but life goes on.

Already, actually before I left the meet, have plans for this next cycle. Now it’s time for one more bourbon and some more chineese food. Asta.

I’ve made many 1/2 in the bag reports after a little bourbon.

Sorry to read the meet didn’t go as palnned. Still you got a PR out of the deal. That alone is worth the trip.

at the bare minimum, you got in there and competed. that’s better than 99% of those that call themselves powerlifters. still a very respectable outing my friend.

Thanks MM and Eco. I will do another detailed rehashing later. gotta get caught up on something called ‘work’…

Trained over lunch. Since I was bench only, and didn’t do any heavy lower last week, figured I would start with that. Will deload the bench some this week, then back at it.

Shoulders a little achy so started off with the power squat machine. Worked up to 810 x 5. That is as many plates as the machine will hold.

Rack pull, 4 pin. worked up to 675 x 1. Back still not 100%, felt a little pinch. Think I will get into the chiro this week or next.

split squats 4 x 10-15

pull throughs 5 x 10

cable abs 4 x 10

calves 4 x 15

nothing major, no PRs, just getting back into the swing.

Further reflections on meet.

I made a couple of critical mistakes, but I am ok with that, this was an unsanctioned fun meet and so I played around with a few variables that I probably wouldn’t have touched otherwise. The mistakes were:

  1. Didn’t do any light training that week prior. I am no good at ‘no weight’ deloads. I should have done some tri/bis/rotator etc work minimum. This is small time stuff and individual.

  2. Took my opener too far out. 12 days out too long for mongo. 7-10 in the future.

  3. Biggy number one: I tried to cut weight, and didn’t maintain recovery supplementation at appropriate level. This left me too deflated with a same day weigh in. Which aided in making my shirt wayyyyyy toooo bigggg, which leads to:

  4. I washed my shirt, but then air dried it. This left it even bigger. Seriously, I was surprised when I took my first 435 because my shirt had no support. Also I have heard others complain about the lower end Titan shirts just giving out after a couple of months. It was barely more than a tight T shirt.

Oh well, those are my excuses. On to bigger and better things. And don’t think I am not hoarding my penny jar for a tighter, more souped up shirt. And I just got my squat suit in the mail last week. My journey as a true gear whore begins…

Holding a big lower body pump from todays efforts I took the dogs for a 1.25 mile walk. They were anxious, as I barely exercised them last week, but the heat/humidity made them lazy dopes after the first half mile.

Light benching. Shoulders and tris and elbows feeling pretty beat up, so just moved a lot of blood around:

Floor press 135 x 20, 185 x 15, 225 x 10, 275 x 10

DB Bench 3 x 15 w/100s

Machine shoulder press 3 x 10-12

Dips 3 x 15 w/bwt

external rotations 3 x 15

rope down ss/w rope ext 3 x 15 each.

1 arm rev pressdown 2 x 15

hanging leg raise toes to bar 4 x 10

I can’t get into the equipment because I’m to lazy. Belt, chalk and knee wraps are about all I can handle.

Great rack pulls. I need to throw some more weight on so I’m kind of close to what you’re pulling.

The thing about the gear is you automatically cannot lift alone. It is complicating my schedule, but at the same time its making my lifitng much more social. That is probably a positive in my life right now.

Thanks on the rack pulls eco. I think my last PR from the 4 pin was 745, so there I was definitely playing it safe. My hands do hurt today though, whenever I do those I make sure to pause at the top for a good three count to build that grip.

I had the same reaction.

SteelyD and DCA, glad I could provide some amusement.

Last night went on an hour long family and dog walk. Encountered a ‘Night Out’ gathering, after which I got to be extra neighborly by yelling at some F-Wad for walking his dogs in a public park off leash.

This a.m. 20 minutes treadmill, 20 minutes elliptical.

Over lunch:

Bent rows 135 x 15, 225 x 10, 275 x 5, 315 x 5, 365 x 4 (damn) 335 x 8, 315 x 12

Pulldown 190 x 10, 235 x 10, 265 x 10, 295 x 8

HS high row 3 x 12

Behind the back shrugs (in smith machine) 4 x 10-20, worked up to 5 plates per side

preacher curl 4 x 8-12

hammer curl 3 x 6-8

cable curl 3 x 12-20

face pulls 4 x 10-20

Feel really good today, bent rows down from last time I did them, which was about a month ago. Will be moving them back up quickly.

Do I need to come over and show you how to do rows? Only 365x4,335x8 and 315x5?..Just kidding. Thats as much as I bench for goodness sakes.

Hey, at least mention I finished with 315 x 12. And my row and bench are about 100% the same.
