Monday Waterbury

Chad,

I’m about to start your TBT program and have a few questions.

My first one is about when I should start. I have a little over a week (about 10 days) before I leave on a week-long mission trip. Obviously, during that week, I won’t have any access to weights and other equipment. So, should I simply wait to start after I come back, or should I start now and simply resume the program where I left off?

Second question: On day 5, I’m supposed to do 2 sets of 15 chin-ups. Unfortunately, my max curl-ups is 14. I seriously doubt I can pull of 2 sets of 15. So, is it OK if I lower the reps to the number I can handle?

That’s about it… thanks for helping!

Hi, CW,

I am on the last wk ABBH I, which one of your programs do you recommend for max. hypertrophy?

Thanks!
GB

I’m not sure if you have an opinion on this but I figured I’d try anyways. What is the youngest you recommend an athlete start lifting? My 11 year old nephew is an exceptionally phenomenal athlete (12.95 100 and 26.8 200 both elecronically timed, 17’ 2" LJ, and a 59.6 400 hand timed. Also on the U-12 Regional ODP team for soccer). On his own he has started doing push ups, sit ups and bought a pull up bar with his own money. I have no problem letting him do these things as they are harmless enough and will help later in life, but when can he start using heavier weights and doing things like squats/DL/Olympic lifts? I have a feeling (based on his parents) that he’s not going to be particularly tall to begin with, so we certainly don’t want to stunt his growth (he’s shorter than average already). Thanks for the help.
GPP exercises are extremely beneficial to young, aspiring athletes. Just try to avoid any exercise that greatly compresses his spine. All other exercises are both useful and beneficial to later athletic endeavors.

CW,
I’m doing your BBB program. Does it follow the same pattern as ABBH, ex/ increase volume for 8x3 and increase load for 3x8?
BBB is based on loading progressions. Increase the load 2.5% with each subsequent workout.

Wait until you return from the trip. In the meantime, follow a program such as the Waterbury Method.

Substitute palms-up grip pulldowns for chins.

Triple Total Training followed by the Waterbury Method would work well.

Hi Mr.W

Do you rate 1 arm snatches and dumbell swings as mass/strength builders for traps? I normally do overhead shrugs after military presses and one training day is devoted to snatches (1 arm with 46 - 50kg for 3 sets of 3), swings (1 arm with 30kg for a set of 10) and hang pulls with dumbells. I really enjoy the session but obviously want to be doing an effective workout.
My other days consist of deads, hacks, bench, row, press and pulldowns.
Thanks for any input.

Hi,
as I want to improve my quicknes and explosivenes, I thought about doing your next big three program on monday and friday, but additionally abs, rotation strength and squats, deadlift and calf raises wednesday, would you say that this would make a good program for my goals?

Stretch every day.

I feel stupid even asking this but here it goes. How do I stretch? What I mean is, should I do certain stretches, amount of time, and so on?

We did stretching in school but it was pretty sorry.

I looked around at some of the articles here but it seems everyone has a different opinion on what you should do. What are your thoughts?

Thanks for your time,

Todd

Yes, stretching can be a complex issue, but it doesn’t need to be. For starters, I suggest you perform 12-15 of medium intensity cardio to raise your core body temp. Then, perform Ian King’s Lazy Man’s Guide to Stretching program in the archives. It’s a sufficient start for someone who doesn’t stretch.

Great, thanks.
