Blazingdave, I have no idea how to increase rotational power, but congratulations on your 2nd place finish! Well done!
Ukrainian, good luck on Thursday - we’re pulling for you!

Blazindave, Russian twists work well.
Kettlebell Circular Clean.
or you can do 'em with dumbbells.

Here’s what I did the other day, it’s one of my favorite workouts:
rest: 60-sec between rounds
2a) DB Deadlift, 60# dbs
rest: none
2b) Push-Up
rest: none
2c) BW Row
rest: none
2a - 2c reps: 10;9;8;7;6;5;5;4
2a-2c completed in 17:57
This routine is ideal for you, Miss Parker, because you’re already getting so much endurance work in Krav, you should just focus on strength in your supplemental training.
Another one I really like is:
rest: 3 min?
2a) KB Clean&Press
5 reps L/R
rest: none
2b) Pistol (assisted)
5 reps L/R
rest: 60-sec
Repeat 2a & 2b for 5 rounds.

this guy doesn’t have a whole lot of charisma, but it was the best example I found:

This is excellent, DD, thanks so much.
So yesterday I get to krav for my one-on-one teacher training with Big Daddy J & I find the Library Lady is there also to train for the same reason. This is very exciting for me, because its really nice to have a partner to go to Phase training with. I don’t know her very well yet, but we’ve always been friendly & she’s exactly my size. Also it adds a little element of competition. I want her to be successful & do well, but I don’t want her to do better than me, so I’ll work a little harder now. ![]()
Next hour, Level 3/4 with Relentless, meaning it was a whipping. Drill drill drill. We did this one I like, where you get into groups of 3, I’m the striker, so I’m striking the focus mitts 100% with whatever combination my partner is yelling out. At the same time, another person is standing right behind her sticking out one arm or the other & while I’m striking I have to yell out “right!” or “left!” based on which hand I see extended. Its confusing because they’re facing me so her left hand is on my right side etc.
Intermittently the focus mitt holder attacks me with the mitts & I have to defend while still calling out which hand I see. Its a recognition drill designed to keep you aware of your surroundings. By the end of it I’m screaming random words, yelling out the same combo number that was just yelled out to me, or “rightnoleftleftleftdammit!!”. You’re a maniac by the end of it.
Hi all,
Well, my short career in Kenpo has come to a rather abrupt end. While I enjoyed the class, I enjoy the idea of being employed a little more, so due to a rather large change in my work schedule, I am no longer able to attend class.
Sucks, but hey, at least I still have a job. After hearing about another newspaper in town that could be closing its doors in 6 weeks, I am really thankful to be employed right now, although I am starting to think about going to back to school to prepapre for another career, should something happen.

Yikes, Djwlfpack, I’m so sorry to hear that! You’re a good writer I wonder if you could write & edit on the side for other publications? Keep in shape & keep thinking positive, you’ll be back on the mat in no time. Good luck!
I got to play some judo today
I no longer can play the 4 or 5 times a week, my neck cant take it.
more like 2 to 3x a month.
I went to a friends gym in a church basement
a good class no one below purple.
this group is new to me, but a few familiar faces.
I had to borrow a gi off of my friend so I am wearing a white belt. hehehe. and pants like two sizes too long.
so we did a typical warm up.
judo or hindu pushups, some calisthenics,
running, skipping, hopping tumbling-breakfalls or ukemi
some more advanced tumbling from bridges, handstands etc.
Someone asked for hip wheels, and throws
so Koshi waza it is.
harai goshi, ogoshi and koshi gurama
we observe and drill these for maybe 10 to 15 minutes, maybe at 25%,with uchikomi and a full throw on the 3rd.
(uchikomi is drilling up until the throw)
then we go about half speed for a few throws each now we are doing full throws.
for another ten or fifteen minutes we only work these three throws, full speed with resistance. I was paired with a lanky tall guy but we managed to make a TON of noise.
after this we do some Randori,
I was excited to do some, its been a while
I threw the taller guy for ogoshi ,uchimata 2x, and then osoto no gari , I dont think he was expecting me to do this, and certainly not in a row. he wasnt unhapy about not throwing me, but said he enjoyed it.
He had good technique but seemed to be holding back and his grips were not aggresive.
we switched partners after this, and it seems I was popular as a new guy and worked with a woman for five or ten minutes…
she is game and we have some fun, I throw seio nage and she comes so close with several of her own attempts her technique is solid… and she catches me with a smaller reap. we play some more and I get her a similiar foot reap. fun
we switch again
this time it is with a dude who I have met a few times, he’s a big guy and about the same height as me 5’6" but hes about 210 or 220,
he joked that they didn’t know me,
but he did… he is a fun guy and he likes to go hard
he had excellent grips, we are both pretty aggressive
and eventually I throw him for tani otoshi.
he threw me for osoto gari it was a big one…
so I returned the favor with my own osoto gari and seio nage we made a LOT of noise,
this was full on full speed and those few throw spread out and mixed up with
good grip fighting.
to wrap up we did some matt crawls , shrimping more pushups and one whose name I forget the japanese word for where you lie
on your stomach and bounce across the matt.
I had to tape up my ankle, and a few of my fingers… during all this , and my feet
feel a little raw I guess they have gotten softer, my neck is stiff as hell - so no more probably until next year but soooo worth it.
My right ear is feeling a little beat up to
I had a good time, and relly wish I could play more.

Alright.
After 3 days and 9 matches (1 on Thursday, 3 of Friday, and 5 today), I am 6-3.
Not bad, but not good either.
Ukrainian, didn’t you say this was your first time? I say good for you!

It was. And thank you.
The half nelson pretty much rocks.

Nice pics ![]()
I figured this was all there was. I shall find a tire and ive already got a 16lb sledgehammer.
Thank you dear ![]()
Actually, im going to start doing one dum\barbell benches.
The core strength you develop is probably insane as you progress and it’s very much like punching, especially since the feet are now even more important.
I think this makes more sense to fighters than doing a normal bench press. This goes for standing presses as well.
Cheers
My schedule is hammering me, but I’m squeaking in some training, not much T-Nation time, though. ![]()
Tonight:
1st hour private lesson with GB, footwork, different forward & backward rolls, running rolls, switching rolls, rolls that end in fall breaks, rolls that never end at all. It was fun.
2nd hour, level 1, 3 person drills, front kicks, various hand strikes, all level 1 chokes from multiple attackers in quick succession.
3rd hour, level 2/3, 360 defenses, outside defenses 1-5. I don’t know if there are more or only 5, that’s all we did tonight, both with counterattacks.

I really miss Judo. I played as a kid, but I never got the chance to see how it all fit into the bigger picture. It was just something I did on Saturday afternoons. I participated in a tourney once, but that was about it competition wise. I really wish I never would have stopped. I’m training for MMA now, but I’m going to see if I can find a decent place to train judo as well for fun.
Attending a John Whitman seminar this weekend. John is a 4th degree black belt & former president of our system, and many many of our drills and exercises were created by him.
We started working the focus mitts, moving in starting with a right hook, then adding various things to that. At one point we were attacking, then backing off to see if our attacker was going to leave us the hell alone. They could either do that, move in for strikes, or go for a takedown, which we would have to block with a sprawl. I guess I was doing okay, because John stopped the class & asked me to demonstrate - but probably also because I’m me & my partner was a 250 pouund guy who is 6’4".
The first time he got me! I landed on my back with a resounding thud in front of everybody & flailed around like a cockroach trying to get his massive body into my guard. We did it again & this time I got the sprawl & he didn’t get me down. Whew! Of course a man that size could muscle me down, but we won’t mention that.
Next we worked weapons, handguns, & for the first time, sticks. I’ve never done anything with sticks before & was happy to discover that it came really naturally to me. I did get whacked in the head a couple of times when my defense wasn’t strong enough - that’s freaking negative reinforcement of the highest order, so I fixed it pretty damn fast.
Next we did standing sweeps which I did not want to do. I’m scared of them because I suck at fall breaks, so its exactly what I need to be doing. Everything went great until close to the end I was tired & lost my concentration & Miss M slammed me into the ground with the force of a tsumani. My head didn’t actually slam into the ground, but made such a hard whiplash motion that now my neck is like concrete. Stupid girl! Me, I mean. The rest of me is sore, too, but in a really good way. Day 2 starts in a couple of hours.
Seminar Day 2, torment and pain. Gun take-aways, for 3 hours straight, including one-on-one and 3rd party protection. My right hand (gun hand) is black & blue & swollen from having the gun ripped out of it, & from doing the same to others.
I’ve never been good at gun, I’m just now actually mastering the most elemental take-away. There’s really no room for mistakes, I’m afraid & I still make lots of them. I’ve been punched in the throat (the side) & had the barrel of a gun rammed into my cheekbone, I’m incredibly sore all over, but remarkably happy.
John is an amazing teacher. One of my favorite things about him is that he’s not a scary Rambo guy. He’s just a regular looking normal polite friendly guy who can hit you so fast & hard all your arms & legs fly right off your body.
We also went over how to recognize a truly dangerous situation, when to strike first & committing to finishing the situation immediately, recognizing someone with bad intentions as opposed to just bad social skills.
A most excellent seminar, I’m already looking forward to the next one, which I guess will be next summer.
