MMA Training Hub

Thanks for all the advice. I will look back at all the posts as well as look up WSB4SB and Waterbury…once again thanks for the advice…this forum seems to have a wide and in depth knowledge base. I will be a reg. visitor and hopefully a contributer here

Question for the thread. Since we have so many jiu-jitsu enthusiasts out there I figured I’d ask what everyones favorite submission is and/or their favorite position to fight from?

I’m still fairly strength dominant, the technique is coming though. But I seldom fail to submit someone once I lock on a key lock or a kimura. I like fighting from half or side control, using my bodyweight to tire and manipulate my opponent.

I have kind of a weird body type…barrel chested with long legs…so I am a big fan of the triangle while using guard. the long legs really help

I seem to get a lot of guillotine chokes, but really, any submission I can lock in I’m happy with. Since I have long legs, I’ve been working a lot of triangles and armbars from guard and have had some success with those. I’m sure the smoother I get in putting those on, they will become staples.

I prefer working from top position. Not that I’m uncomfortable on my back, it’s just that I feel like I can do more and am in more control of what’s happening when I’m on top, either in half-guard or side control. Of course, being in mount isn’t bad, either.

weirdly enough I used to be much more comfortable in the top position. When I started participating in MMA I had a really bad habit of going to my stomach"BASE" when I ended up on my back having wrestled for as long as I did it was kind of natural. now after a small amount of time in the MMA world I am much more comfortable on my back. I feel much less vulnerable and off balance in either side control or with my opp in my guard.

Hmm. I think that people need to stretch more often. Especially for the hip joints, as being able to move the hips is vital in grappling and MMA.

I just do 10 minutes a day at least. Whenever I can fit it in. I like to do it before bed as it can be relaxing. Also, if I have time between classes I will stretch as well.

Bjuo - thanks, but i seriously can’t stop laughing at your comment about my screen name. It’s just my actual name with no spaces! my name is Darragh O Conaill pronounced Da-ra O Con-el! I suppose it’s understandable as it’s an irish name and hardly common in america, still got me laughing though!

Time: 120 mins

First time back in the gym with the guys powerlifting in six or so weeks, not training for a meet right now. Trying to balance PL with MMA, doing movements that I think will benefit both.

Deadlifts
165x8
275x5
340x3
405x3
460x2

Reverse Band Deadlifts
275x3
385x3
440x3x8sets

Bench Press
145x8
175x5
200x3x2
225x3x6sets
210x6
175x12

Back Circut x 3

SLDL 275 x 8
Machine Rows x 8
Chin Ups x 8
Seated GM’s x 8

Felt decent today, noticeably weaker on all movement but that comes with 1.5 months off. Will slowly increase the bench and deadlift to get back to and surpass where I was in November.

BJJ-gi tonight.

Oh…Chris how’d the BUDO fights go?

I was really happy to see Cote win last night, early stoppage but it would of ended the same way had he been given another 2 seconds. I was dissapointed with Thiago Taraves, he should of won that match much more decisively. Swick and Burkman was also quite lackluster.

What’s good everyone.
I’ve been reading posts since the beginning in November and I’m ready to get on board.
Thanks for all the posts so far. It has been very helpful.

About me: I have a basic martial arts background (karate- 5 years).
I’m an all-around athlete that excelled at baseball, basketball and football in highschool.
Focused on hypertrophy, olympic lifts, strongman and ployometric training throughout the years (all spread out) after HS.

I’ve been into MMA since 2000 and 3 months ago is when I decided that it’s now or never.
I’ve almost learned more in 3 months than I did while taking karate.

My friend who has his pro card is taking me under his wing right now and training me at my gym. I’m just waiting for my health insurance to kick in at my job before I start training at any facility. (I can’t wait to start up Muay Thai and BJJ)

I also started to work on my wrestling skills by working with individuals from Lehigh University along with former state champs (PA,NJ) I’ve never wrestled before so I’m fortunate to live where I do because the Lehigh Valley has the best wrestlers in the country.

Welcome to the thread AlphaMurph! i’m positive you will enjoy your experiences with mma.

My favorite sub changes quite regularly, i suppose for me it’s generally something i’ve just learned and that i am beginning to put into practice while rolling, at the moment i’m loving the electric chair (as demonstrated by eddie bravo on www.submissions101.com). I like this because i enjoy working from bottom half guard when it’s just straight nogi rolling, for MMA i don’t think it would be too safe a sub to go for.

BUDO as a card in general was a great event. My fighters in specific didn’t go as well. We had one of 4 guys win. The shit deal is that 2 of the three others were winning stunningly until the point where they both got caught hard in triangles. It’s weird to see your guys pounding the snot out of there opponents as though they were married but then watching them fall prey to some weak sauce tri-chokes with no setup.

I would say that this should be an avoidable situation but I think that fighting too soon before a BJJ base is established is a strong factor.

Our other guy had his opponent knocked out on his feet and then incidentally went to the ground where the guy recovered and won again due to a lack of a BJJ base.

Moral of the story here is that no amount of punches will ever get you out of the side control or triangle choke.

As far as a favorite sub I would say that statistically speaking, mine is the reverse bent arm or kimura. But right now I’m liking compression locks at the arm. But any sub that is not gifted to me is a good one. If my opponent is unwary enough to throw himself into an untimely doom then I don’t really take that as any type of achievement. If I trick them then that’s good to. But without intent its not much fun having your opponent quit on you. Just like when people give up because they are on the bottom. weak pants.

Favorite submission is the triangle because I usually end up going against bigger dudes (220+) and my legs aren’t that long, I’m only 5’10, but if I manage to hit a triangle against a dude with big shoulders it means my technique was great.

Needless to say it doesn’t happen very often…I really like to hit it from mount if I can fit my leg in without the guy going too crazy from the bottom because it feels super secure when you trap them underneath you. The ones I hit most often are americanas or kimuras from sidecontrol-the typical fat boy submissions

Welcome alpha…im fairly new here as well but have a decent wrestling background. It sounds like your in good hands with the PA guys and what not but feel free to ask. Quick question for the group. I am coming off an injury recently and have not been training with any sort of intensity recently.

As expected with the lack of training and cardio I have put on a bit of weight…the bad kind. I am by no means obease…I am probably in the neighborhood of 15%BF. I am trying to make the decision as to whether or not I should cut back down and then focus on “Clean Gaining” to put me at a heavier weight or should I just start with the strength and cardio right away and worry about cutting later.

I know its kind of a trivial question. In the end its up to me but I would like to know how some of the more experienced guys in the sport would go about it…Thanks…Also anyone in here have any experience with the Anabolic Diet? Kind of got interested about it in a strange way…story for a later date but just wondering if you guys know much about it. I have the book but still curious…

Forgot to post my training from the last 2 days:

01/23- Took a page from Djwlfpack’s routine
Strength Workout

1A. Clean & Press, 5x5: 185 (5, 5, 5, 5, 5)
1B. Mixed-grip pullups, 5x6-8: BW (8, 8, 8, 8, 8)
2A. Close-grip Bench Press, 3x5: 225 (5)
2B. Seated Cable Row, 3x5: 200 (5)
3. MB (15 lb) Pikes 3x20

Pool Workout
Worked on combos in the water from one end to the other 3 sets of up and back(jab, cross, hook, hook, knee strike, knee strike, etc…)
I’m a big fan of working knee strikes in the pool.
After each set I would do a circuit of Plate crunches (25 lb x 20), diamond push-ups (25-30), walking lunges (high knee- hold for 3 seconds at the top)

Strength Workout

1A. Rack Pulls, 5x3-5: 335 (5)
1B. Leg Raises, 5x12: BW (12)
2A. One-arm DB Clean & Press, 3x5: 50 (5)
2B. Inverted Rows, 3xamap: BW (15, 14, 12)
3A. Two-arm DB Swing, 2x15: 45 (15)
3B. Prisoner Squat, 2x20: BW

Time: 60 min.
Notes: Did rack pulls b/c no room to deadlift. Probably could’ve used more weight but my grip wouldn’t hold up. Weight went up on 2A, 3A and reps on 2B went up, so I’m happy with that. Stretched for 15 min. following workout.

Had to skip BJJ last night due to work, but will be going tomorrow morning.

If it were me, I’d just start working out now, and then start worrying about your weight as your fight/tournament draws closer. After a few months of training you’ll get a good indication of what your “walk around” weight is, and then once you determine that, you can figure out what weight class you’d fall into after cutting.

I walk around at 185-190, so if I were to do MMA, I’d fight at 170. For BJJ tournaments it’s a bit different, as you typically weigh in the morning of, so you typically compete closer to your usual weight. Some people drop a few pounds to just get under certain weight divisions so they can be one of the heavier guys in the group.

Hope that helps some.

yeah just start training. Fat comes off with hard training. Just make sure you have the protein high and the carbs in their windows and oyu will be fine. Keep the cheats to a minimum and you will cut the weight off.

I find that eating the same thing every day is a relaxing way to drop pounds off.

Also the AD is good but hard to do if you have a heavy MMA/BJJ/MT schedule. the first few months are rough as you get adapted. I would say to just keep the carbs clean and good like oats and beans and you wont have to worry about fat accumulation or glycogen storage.

This being said I use the AD as my eating style, primarily.
