MLB Thread: 2013

Shit, 8 straight! 1 game under .500 never felt so good! Does anyone out there think the Blue Jays have legitimately turned the corner and become the team many predicted they’d be before the season or, do you think they will fall back to where they’ve been for most of the season? At least they are legitimately back into the wildcard discussion now.
They’d have to have an elevated level of play for a prolonged period, maintain hope but keep your expecations low.

No not this high a level they currently are, but still.

Now I know why I never watch baseball highlights on ESPN rather than MLB network. All they talked about in the Padres win over the Dodgers was the two singles that Puig had.

While in Vegas I put $20 on the diamondbacks to win the NL pennant.

20-1 odds

Was just at a rave in LV full of California kids.

Of baseball hats I saw, Padres were most common, giants second, dodgers last

They still have raves?

I was thinking the same thing…do they still drink blue whales, wear glow sticks and pop tabs of acid and mesc?

They still have mescaline?

I’m not sure but when I was in HS they sure as hell did

I am pretty much ready to concede any hope for the Yankees at this point. Losing Youklis for at least 10 weeks and Texeira again, not to mention Granderson again is too much to overcome. Pitching has been rock solid but you gotta score runs to win, and the lineup is God awful. No protection for Cano, one of the worst lineups in the league right now. I still think they will hang around somehow, with no real shot though. Next year I believe will be another lean year as well.
I hate to say I told you so.

I will say this, they have a good nucleus of young players they can develope. I like them better than the superstars. But injuries will kill any team, and it was just the Yankee’s turn.

Let me be clear, I detest the Yankees. I respect them, but I hate them.
To be honest, I think they need to clean house and get young. Screw the superstar teams and get some young talent on that team that will make them competitive for years to come. Like I said, I think they have a good core and they can build around that. Think what they could get for CC? I don’t want him because I don’t like fat players, but somebody will give up a lot of young talent for him.

They are still 8 games above 500 and right in the thick of things so I may have jumped the gun a bit. They have just lost too much offense for them to keep winning like this, Texeira is most likely out for the year, Granderson till after the all star break and Youklis for 10 weeks, you cant keep on winning with their horrid starting lineup. Hate the yankees or not you cannot deny the injuries they have suffered and all things considered they have had a great year.

They have one of the best bullpens in baseball and solid starting pitching.

Next year for all I have read they are going to get under 180 million and you will no longer see Petite, Kuroda, Rivera, Hughes, Granderson, Joba and maybe Ichiro.

They will get a ton younger next year, Pineda is close to coming back this year, If Nova can get his head on straight he can be very solid. CC will still be around, and while not what he once was he could still be effective. I am pretty sure Cano will be resigned. I expect lean a year or two for the yankees coming up.

I can see any team winning the NL west at this point. There is no clear standout team. All it can take is for someone to get hot at the right time.
Honestly, and I hate admit this, but I think the Giants will grab it again. They are a good second half team and they are in it enough that a few hot streaks will put them over the top. they have the pitching and when the bats come around they will be in it. I don’t think they will run away, but I think they will be there.

Yep and the music is more popular than ever.

300k attendance over 3 days. Mostly Cali kids

That’s why I chose the Dbacks. Can win the NL West then get hot at the right time while also having a good payout.

RA Dickey 4.72 ERA

Barry Zito 4.53 ERA

If you were to make the bet DB and I made at the start of the season today, who would you take?

Obviously you haven’t watched the defending champs at all then. Their offense has been good enough to win all year, other than the current slump they’re in. Their pitching has been horrible and, quite frankly, they don’t have the pitching to get it done this year. Vogelsong is injured and he’s lost it anyways and Lincecum looks like shit 3 out of every 4 starts. But it’s their bullpen that’s been horrendous lately. They’re hurting from losing Casilla for most of the year, they aren’t getting shit out of anyone other than Romo and Javy Lopez (who’s only good against lefties), Affeldt has struggled mightily with inherited runners, they have no middle relief whatsoever and I’ve never been sold on Romo as a long-term solution at closer. They have several good prospects, but they’re all only about 20 and down in high A ball or AA.

They’ve also lost Pagan for most of the year and Sandoval looks like he gained about 50 fucking lbs while he was on the DL. Their defense has been absolutely fucking horrendous, too. Other than Posey and Pence, everyone on the team is having a down year or is injured. They simply aren’t a good baseball team and they don’t have the pitching to save them. In 2010, 2011 and last year they looked like shit for large parts of the year, but they were playing good baseball. They just didn’t hit much. But I knew they had a really good team because they could do out of the three main things in baseball really well, which was pitch and play defense. And really, that’s more like 75% of the game, since good pitching and good defense doesn’t go through the same swings in production that good hitting does. If you pitch and play defense well, it pretty much shows up every night. So I had confidence in those teams all three years, and I was validated two of those years.

This year, they fucking blow, period.

In 2011 you had a post like this, declaring they were done mega early and then admitted you felt ashamed when they started playing better later on.

Lets put it in perspective how early it still is: Pittsburgh is on a 102 game win pace. That won’t happen

But how long is it “early”?

The season is halfway done. That hardly qualifies as early and as much as no one likes to admit it, the early games count just as much as the late games.

To say they’re done though, you don’t think it’s early?

They’re 3 games out of a playoff spot in a division full of bad teams. I agree context matters at this point.

5.5 games out of a playoff spot, a newly returned Healthy Reyes, a healthier Dickey and 81 games left to play. Are the Jays done or is it early?

Sure, but if that’s the case it’s “early” until mid-September.

I’m not saying they’re done or not, I don’t watch enough Giants baseball, but I don’t think it’s early to make an assessment of a team.
