MLB Season 2011

DBCooper: Rays are 10 games over .500 with only a handful of games left before the break. Are you sticking with your prediction that they’ll finish below .500?

Yay.

What the fuck do you think? Of course not. Was I wrong? It’ll probably turn out that way. So what? Do you have a point?

What the fuck is the point of this thread if we can’t make and call out people on their predictions? Didn’t you point out several times how wrong I was about the Giants last playoffs?

In the NBA thread I had Mavs fans rub it in my face after they won because I picked the Heat and was adamant they stomp the Mavs. I didn’t get upset it’s part of the fun in discussing the sport.

Lighten the fuck up. Seriously.

Me calliing you out on a prediction =/= personal attack

I just don’t see the point in bringing to my attention the fact that the Rays are over .500 at the midway point. That would be like me taunting you about your prediction regarding the Giants before they actually won the World Series or you getting lambasted about the Heat when the series was knotted at 2 games apiece.

I’ll gladly eat my humble pie when it’s served to me on a plate, not when the oven is still preheating. So when/if the Rays finish above .500 you can lay into me all you want and I’ll take it for the most part. I sense that you will derive a perverse pleasure from this and to be honest, I’ll derive an even more perverse pleasure in watching you get such a kick out of being right.

Now, just to be preemptive I’ll mention your prediction about the Blue Jays being the team to beat in 2-3 years, which I’m sure you feel is analogous to the scenario in question. It is not, for the simple reason that the team to beat in a division or in a league is always the previous year’s champion. The Phillies were the prohibitive favorite to win it all this year, but the Giants are the team to beat in the majors until they are not the champions or have been eliminated from postseason contention.

For the Jays to be the team to beat in their division in 3 years they’d have to win the division 2 years from now. So if I disregard your claim about their level of competitiveness 3 years from now, it is not a case of me getting on you before the fact. Actually, if anything it’s just a matter of semantics or confusion over what it means to be “the team to beat”.

A-Rod is signed until 2017 so he isn’t retiring or becoming a free agent anytime soon.

The Yankees payroll has shrunk in recent years and they haven’t paid so little in luxury tax since 2003. If they want to keep their payroll under 210 it will effect their ability to sign players.

Although they can plug holes through free agency, they’ve relied heavily on 4 core future HOFers players basically since 1996. I think they’ll need to do one hell of a job in free agency over the coming years if they’re consistently going to field 90+ win teams. I don’t know much about current Yankee management, but the fact they tied Cashman’s hands and forced him to sign Soriano makes me wonder how much further they will fuck up this team.
You know, it’s entirely possible (I would bet that this IS the case) that the Yankees have cut their payroll slightly the last couple years for a reason. Perhaps they have done so in preparation for a changing of the guard, so to speak. They aren’t idiots over there and while it doesn’t take a genius to throw top dollar at the latest big name free agent, it does take some smarts to pick and choose the right free agent to sign. In this respect they have a damn good track record. Did they even make an offer to Jayson Werth?

I think they’ve pinched pennies (as odd as that sounds) because they know that they’re going to have to reload here pretty soon. Saving a little cash here and there will give them the extra flexibility to do this.

The perverse pleasure line made me laugh. If you look at what I actually wrote I asked if you were sticking to your prediction and haven’t actually said you are wrong. I thought this would be a good time to bring it since we are basically at the halfway point (crazy how fast this season is flying by). I don’t plan on bringing it up again until game 162 has been played.

The statement I made about the Jays may not be comparable but if memory serves me correctly, you reminded that I flip flopped on my opinion of the Braves chances of winning the division this year. It didn’t bother me at all.

After the discussion of the Yankees future in this thread I honestly do not know what to expect from them 2013+.

Well, I suppose if I could take back my prediction I would, but it’s too late. It’s been forever preserved by the Almighty Internet.

I don’t remember you flip-flopping about the Braves. Which way did you go with that one? Shit, the Braves, I believe, have the 2nd best record in the bigs, so even if I end up being wrong about them winning the division it isn’t looking like the crazy prediction a lot of people (I don’t know if you’re one of them) labeled it at the time.

Thank god the Red Sox are back on top of the AL East where they should be… but what does this say about the yankees now… lol

A Rangers fan died tonight. I feel like shit and I don’t know why. Josh Hamilton threw him a ball and he reached for it over the railing but lost his balance. It was only a 20ft fall but he landed head first. There’s a vid on youtube of him falling (but not showing him hit the ground or anything). Anyways - yeah I feel like shit, this one hurts for some reason.

^ Oh damn. I saw the headline on Espn but didn’t read the article. I didn’t know that’s what happened. Hamilton must be feeling like absolute shit right now. Wow, life is so fucked up sometimes…

You were saying how you thought the Braves would finish atop the NL East during the winter and I told you were crazy. Then a few days before the start of the season I said I could see the Braves finishing first.

Atlanta looks good this year. They will make the playoffs :D
Aren’t you the same guy who ridiculed me for predicting two months ago that Philly would be nagged with injuries all year and that Atlanta would take the division? Jumping on my bandwagon a little late aren’t you?

In other news, the Giants are the best team in the NL, hands down. Best staff 1-12, underrated lineup and young studs in Bumgarner, Posey and possibly Sandoval and Belt. I like it. But I’m still pulling for a Phillies/Giants rematch in the NLCS. Every game will be 1-0, with the Giants taking it in 6 again due to their superior ability to manufacture runs.
If you had caught Derek Jeter’s 3000th hit what would you have done with the ball?

In other news Jose Bautista just hit #30.

So what’s he on pace for now? 60?

Shoved it up your ass, slit your fucking throat and wait for it to turn into a diamond.
