MLB Season 2011

See how whiteside does I guess we got no one to bring up. Hilar bring Benji back! Ha!

Coop yet right its catcher he probably should stay its where he excels as long as this incident doesn’t psych him out. To me broken ankle better than torn ligaments but I’m a pirate not a doctor dammit.

Was almost traumatized when that happened last night… watching baseball alone no one to commiserates with!

Just another typical day of being a giants fan!!

DBCooper - wise words.

Whiteside can’t hit. He didn’t in the minors and won’t in the bigs. They need to get someone else. There are a few guys who they could trade for but none that contribute a ton. Just another typical day of being a giants fan.

I say stick with Whiteside for a bit and then trade for pudge in another month or so. I also am serious about Benjie Molina. I bet they contact him to see if he has any interest. His speed on the basepaths and athletic ability would be nice to have again.

The all time greatest post I’ve ever read on TNation was in the post season thread last year where he compared being a Giants fan to sysiphus (sp?) And his rock… “impending doom” OMG literary genius and poetically perfect for us. It is what it is.

EDIT: “he” being DBCooper and the post was way early in the post season. I actually pasted the post in an email to my dad said someone wrote it in an online forum. Dad emailed me back “I wrote that”

I believe this is what you are describing:

“No one will ever be able to properly describe the eternal pessimism and finely-honed sense of doom that Giants fans carry around their neck like a millstone, day in and day out. These playoff runs they occasionally go on are nothing more than the last few steps at the top of Sisyphus’ hill. The generally poor Bay Area sports scene the last couple years only enhances the perception amongst Giants fans that each summer is a different Greek tragedy that we are forced to endure in perpetuity.”

The baseball gods were angry the day Posey was injured.

I think they’ll go after Pudge hard. There is literally no one available at catcher who can have any sort of impact aside from him, and his impact will be leadership and intangibles and not his actual performance at the plate or behind it.

I also think this injury puts the Giants in the position of HAVING to trade for Jose Reyes now, assuming the price is right. Although Tejada has picked it up considerably since the end of April, he isn’t the answer at SS or 3B for a team trying to defend a world title. He’d look good playing SS on the Pirates. The Giants NEED offense badly now, even if Sandoval continues to tear it up when he returns and Belt shows improvement.

Huff looks like a fucking aberration now, Schierholtz should be getting every start in right but he doesn’t out of some misguided attempt to placate Rowand and Burrell, neither of whom are worthy of anything other than a spot start every once in a while.

You know, Pablo Sandoval was a pretty good catcher for the Giants in the minors and even played as the backup catcher in the bigs when he was an August call-up back in 2008…

Its still too early in the season to right off huff. He has been awful but he is a proven solid big league hitter. I think Ross will put up decent numbers this year. I hate Pat Burrel with a passion. He seems like a great guy to have around but he k’s 75% of the time.

I would love to finally have a legit leadoff guy in Reyes but I don’t want to give up sanchez to do it unless Reyes will agree to resign in SF.

I thought about using Sandoval to catch once a week or so too but they already said they won’t do that. What do you think is going to happen with Zito? Vogelsong has been dealing…I remember watching him pitch in Salem-keizer his first year in the minors 10+ years ago!

Um, what do you guys have to trade for Reyes that won’t leave a hole somewhere else in your roster? There are plenty of teams that want a shortstop and have more to offer IMO.

Huff has made a career out of being inconsistent year-to-year, plus he’s 34. Too soon to he’s totally done, but it’s possible that he is.

Looking forward to this series with the Mets.

Zach Wheeler or Gary Brown would make a nice centerpiece of a trade that includes Dan Runzler and Nate Schierholtz. I hate to see Schierholtz go, but of all the outfielders they have, he’s the most expendable one that would actually look attractive to another team. Also, if the Giants are in it at the trade deadline and Reyes is still available, he won’t garner a high price anyways. Everybody’s going to lowball the Mets now that Wilpon has essentially come out and lowered his own asking price in that interview of his last week. It won’t take much to get Reyes at all now, especially when a lot of teams that are in it right now don’t need a shortstop so badly that they’d overpay for a rent-a-player.

As far as Zito goes, barring some sort of trade that shakes up the roster (or barring a trade in which some fool takes Zito and about 10 million bucks off the Giants’ hands), he’ll be put in the bullpen and Runzler will get sent down to the minors. He’ll be long reliever and hopefully he’ll flip out about it so much that he attacks several players and fans in a drunken, PCP-fueled rage, thereby voiding his contract and possibly even end up being shot and killed in a confrontation with the police that culminates in a wild shoot-out at the Caltrain Station on 4th and Townsend.

They definitely have to do something. There’s really nobody left in that lineup who can drive in runs.

Even with Sandoval back, wrist injuries can fuck up a player’s swing for a while after returning.

I guarantee Bonds can still hit .280 with 25+ homers and 80 RBI’s.

I love when fans of a team propose a trade… really? You aren’t comfortable with giving up NATE SCHIERHOLTZ (career .314 OBP) for a shortstop who hits .290 with some pop and can steal 60 bases? If I were the Mets there is no way I make that trade.

I disagree about Wilpon’s comments having any effect on how much it will take to get Reyes. Like any trade, it will be the number of teams competing for him that determines how much he costs (Wilpon’s comments just make it known he’s available). If, for example, 4 teams are pushing for Reyes, they are worried about outbidding each other, not about how badly Wilpon wants to get rid of Reyes.

Edit: I’ll counter-propose Reyes for Bumgarner and Wheeler (one major-league player and one prospect, par for the course for a prime excellent player). I could see Giants fans disliking that, it depends on how you evaluate Bumgarner - by the standards he set as an insane prospect, or by his pro performance to date where he’s lost some velocity and his strikeout rates have dropped. Maybe I could see a swap based on Reyes for Cain, with the Mets throwing in something extra.

I’d hate to see Schierholtz go because I like the way he plays, not because I think he’s that good. Not only am I totally comfortable with him getting traded for Reyes, I’d embrace it. Zach Wheeler would be the centerpiece of the trade and if the Giants offered him for Reyes, they’d be fools not to make the deal. He’s the one I wouldn’t be comfortable parting with. I’m of the opinion that you NEVER trade good young pitching unless you’re sure that the player in question is not going to be nearly as good as everyone who wants him in a trade thinks that he’ll be. Wheeler is a legit prospect, the best one in the Giants organization. 95-96mph fastball with a lot of heavy sink and a huge curveball. He’s dominating high-A ball right now and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the bigs by the All-Star Game next year.

As far as Reyes goes, it’ll come down to WHO wants him, not how many want him. There aren’t any contenders who really have a need at SS to the point where they’ll overpay for a rent-a-player. Everybody knew Reyes was going to be available a year ago; Wilpon just lowered the asking price. Who are the contenders who have a need at shortstop (a need, NOT a player less than Reyes at short) and can afford to overpay in a trade? That list is non-existent, the Mets know it and the teams who might want Reyes know that the Mets know it. I think they’ll get low-balled from here to the middle of July and end up parting with him for a mid to high level prospect and a couple of decent players off someone’s 40-man roster.
