DBCooper - wise words.
Whiteside can’t hit. He didn’t in the minors and won’t in the bigs. They need to get someone else. There are a few guys who they could trade for but none that contribute a ton. Just another typical day of being a giants fan.
I say stick with Whiteside for a bit and then trade for pudge in another month or so. I also am serious about Benjie Molina. I bet they contact him to see if he has any interest. His speed on the basepaths and athletic ability would be nice to have again.
I think they’ll go after Pudge hard. There is literally no one available at catcher who can have any sort of impact aside from him, and his impact will be leadership and intangibles and not his actual performance at the plate or behind it.
I also think this injury puts the Giants in the position of HAVING to trade for Jose Reyes now, assuming the price is right. Although Tejada has picked it up considerably since the end of April, he isn’t the answer at SS or 3B for a team trying to defend a world title. He’d look good playing SS on the Pirates. The Giants NEED offense badly now, even if Sandoval continues to tear it up when he returns and Belt shows improvement.
Huff looks like a fucking aberration now, Schierholtz should be getting every start in right but he doesn’t out of some misguided attempt to placate Rowand and Burrell, neither of whom are worthy of anything other than a spot start every once in a while.
Um, what do you guys have to trade for Reyes that won’t leave a hole somewhere else in your roster? There are plenty of teams that want a shortstop and have more to offer IMO.
Huff has made a career out of being inconsistent year-to-year, plus he’s 34. Too soon to he’s totally done, but it’s possible that he is.

Zach Wheeler or Gary Brown would make a nice centerpiece of a trade that includes Dan Runzler and Nate Schierholtz. I hate to see Schierholtz go, but of all the outfielders they have, he’s the most expendable one that would actually look attractive to another team. Also, if the Giants are in it at the trade deadline and Reyes is still available, he won’t garner a high price anyways. Everybody’s going to lowball the Mets now that Wilpon has essentially come out and lowered his own asking price in that interview of his last week. It won’t take much to get Reyes at all now, especially when a lot of teams that are in it right now don’t need a shortstop so badly that they’d overpay for a rent-a-player.
As far as Zito goes, barring some sort of trade that shakes up the roster (or barring a trade in which some fool takes Zito and about 10 million bucks off the Giants’ hands), he’ll be put in the bullpen and Runzler will get sent down to the minors. He’ll be long reliever and hopefully he’ll flip out about it so much that he attacks several players and fans in a drunken, PCP-fueled rage, thereby voiding his contract and possibly even end up being shot and killed in a confrontation with the police that culminates in a wild shoot-out at the Caltrain Station on 4th and Townsend.
I love when fans of a team propose a trade… really? You aren’t comfortable with giving up NATE SCHIERHOLTZ (career .314 OBP) for a shortstop who hits .290 with some pop and can steal 60 bases? If I were the Mets there is no way I make that trade.
I disagree about Wilpon’s comments having any effect on how much it will take to get Reyes. Like any trade, it will be the number of teams competing for him that determines how much he costs (Wilpon’s comments just make it known he’s available). If, for example, 4 teams are pushing for Reyes, they are worried about outbidding each other, not about how badly Wilpon wants to get rid of Reyes.
I’d hate to see Schierholtz go because I like the way he plays, not because I think he’s that good. Not only am I totally comfortable with him getting traded for Reyes, I’d embrace it. Zach Wheeler would be the centerpiece of the trade and if the Giants offered him for Reyes, they’d be fools not to make the deal. He’s the one I wouldn’t be comfortable parting with. I’m of the opinion that you NEVER trade good young pitching unless you’re sure that the player in question is not going to be nearly as good as everyone who wants him in a trade thinks that he’ll be. Wheeler is a legit prospect, the best one in the Giants organization. 95-96mph fastball with a lot of heavy sink and a huge curveball. He’s dominating high-A ball right now and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the bigs by the All-Star Game next year.
As far as Reyes goes, it’ll come down to WHO wants him, not how many want him. There aren’t any contenders who really have a need at SS to the point where they’ll overpay for a rent-a-player. Everybody knew Reyes was going to be available a year ago; Wilpon just lowered the asking price. Who are the contenders who have a need at shortstop (a need, NOT a player less than Reyes at short) and can afford to overpay in a trade? That list is non-existent, the Mets know it and the teams who might want Reyes know that the Mets know it. I think they’ll get low-balled from here to the middle of July and end up parting with him for a mid to high level prospect and a couple of decent players off someone’s 40-man roster.
