MLB Season 2011

I think it’s time for today’s “Random Depressing Nationals Fact of the Week”:

Laynce Nix batted cleanup last night.

Inter-league play just doesn’t do it for me…
I think it would be much better if they had fewer interleague series. 1-2 series at home and 1-2 on the road.

Get the previous World Series matchups and cross town rival series in and call it a day.

Then for the teams who have never been to the World Series and do not have a rival team, have them play the same teams every year so a rivalry can begin to build.

Giants and A’s lived up exactly to expectations. Amazing pitching, no hitting.

2-1 final in extra innings ha.
The Giants are at it again!

They’ve played in a Major League-high 37 games decided by 3 runs or less and they’re 13-3 in one run games, 10-0 in those games at home and they’ve won 12 of their last 15 despite not scoring more than 4 runs in any of those games except for 7 that they dropped on NY three weeks ago and the 8 they dropped on the Dodgers in Dodger Stadium.

There is absolutely no substitute for playing in so many tight games. They’re actually better in them so far this year than they were last year. Their offense may be terrible, but who cares? It only needs to be good enough to score one more run than the other team and that’s exactly what they do. They may not LOOK like the best team in the NL, but they’re playing as good as anyone in the league right now.
Won another close one yesterday in extras. I think we also settled the “Best in the Bay” debate with that sweep.

Please funnel your positive thoughts towards the Kung Fu Panda and his recovery process.
I’m funneling my positive thoughts, but all I can think of are Brinks armored trucks, Barry Zito, a forged passport and a high-powered rifle.

I went to my first Padres game of the year saturday night and i’m glad my ticket was free. This team is pathetic at home and I can see why people don’t really show up. Can’t hit the ball at home!

Omg no! What’s going on here? Posey down!

EDIT: oh shit replay of that DID NOT look good fukking fukk.

I guess he could be out the whole year. That sucks. The play didn’t look dirty at all though. It’s just unfortunate his ankle got caught up under him.

no it wasnt dirty just good clean hard play and bad luck.

probably broken.

I don’t think it was dirty but it was not needed. He could have slid to the outside and been fine. I know it is tough to make the decision as a runner so I don’t blame the guy but just unfortunate because Posey wasn’t expecting to be hit.

Damn. Those home plate collisions are absolutely brutal.

and the discussion is… should he have been left as catcher at all since he is so versatile. Done is done though and we may be looking at first base next season. I don’t think this is career ending but the season is dunzo.

He played shortstop in college and in the cape cod summer league. I bet he could play 3rd or 1st. But giants have Pablo and huff at the corners. Huff is a joke in the outfield and shouldn’t play out there.

How about the giants sign benji molina for the rest of the year??

holy shit… Posey got BLASTED!!!

I would watch baseball if that happened more often lol

I’m not overly familiar with career ending injuries of catchers… has there been incidents in the past where a home plate collision has ended careers?

I only know of Buck Martinez had a failed comeback after this play:

But he was 37 at the time so his career was basically over anyways.

Posey didn’t make the play. The throw was pretty good, a little off towards
first, but not much. He missed the throw and was moving to block the plate. He knew he
was going to get hit, every catcher expects to get hit on those plays. That’s why you
are taught to keep the mask on for these plays. Unfortunately,
his foot got trapped under him, he was in an awkward position for the tag and got
trucked pretty good, no elbows or forearms to the head, nice clean shoulder. Plenty
of catchers have not come back fully from these hits, Fosse vs. Pete Rose(aka Asshole)
comes to mind. Listen to whatever Mike Sciosia says about the play. He was the best
ever at blocking the plate and even he got his bell rung a few times. Sometimes the runner
gets the short end of the stick, but, not usually as serious of injuries as the catchers.
Change the rules??? No way. Play hard and play clean. Catchers dream of these types of plays
with the game on the line and a close play at the plate. I’d be willing to bet most
catchers out there are thinking one thing. Posey didn’t make the play.

I feel for the guy, but, it is the risk you accept when you put on the mask.

Red Sox on top of the AL East!!!.. yeah with the damn yankees. Stil…

First the Sharks, then this. Not cool.

I wouldn’t argue at all if they moved him out of the catcher position next year. You can only imagine how much it would affect his performance behind the plate, especially when making catches like that in the future…

I’m just glad his knee was totally fine and he didn’t tear any ligaments, only strained apparently.

I think we can stick it out though. Pitching and defense are what we do.

Would you want to stick with Whiteside or sign someone?

For what it’s worth, Posey played every single position, including pitcher, in college. I watched the game where Martin put him in every spot on the field. Maybe he could become super-utility man, and be eligible for every single position in fantasy baseball!

lol @ blue jays

You’re in severe pain so I’ll let this one go.

He should have stayed at catcher, and if it’s feasible depending on his recovery process, he should stay at catcher after this as well. He’s a good hitter, but realistically, he isn’t a top-level hitter yet and he may be that one day, but I don’t see him becoming one of the top few hitters in the bigs in the future.

His value is his defense behind the plate. He’s already one of the best defensive catchers in the game and one of the best handlers of pitchers. The fact that he’s an above average hitter is almost icing on the cake for the Giants. Granted, you put him at another position and he’d be a good hitter compared to the rest of the league at that position, but he’d be much closer to being just another guy than he ever would behind the plate. He has to stay there when he returns.
