MLB Playoffs 2010

Even if Tejada hits for a slightly better average than Uribe and better suited for AT&T park, there’s uncertainty in what you’ll get out of him this year. His batting average dropped almost 50 points from 2009 to 2010 (play down the importance of stats but you can’t ignore that). Not surprising for someone who was 36 and will be 37 next year.

I think if Ross ends up producing, Sandoval gets his shit together, and Posey continues to improve on his numbers at the plate they WILL win the NL West. But I’m not convinced they’re a lock for a playoff berth in 2011.

You’re right. You’re fucking right! This IS gay. I’m arguing about America’s national pasttimw with someone who lives in fucking Ontario. Who probably is tucked into his bed and sound asleep by the time the Giants’ games started out here on the West Coast. Why am I arguing about this? I’m not necessarily proud to admit it, but I understand the way the game of baseball is played better than I understand anything else. I’m just beating my brains against a brick wall here.

Feb.20th: first Spring Training game in Arizona. Are you excited Hallowed? I think it’ll even be broadcast on KNBR.
You gotta understand that your arguing with someone who will make judgments about an NBA team’s chances of greatness based on their performance in December. A zing on therajraj… ;0
EDIT: lol - I just think saying this years Lakers team will be the best Lakers team (especially the way you said it) in the last 15 years in November is a bit much. Especially when they have won 5 championships in that period.

Could be, could be. Not will be. I just gotta say, back in 2001, I was very frustrated watching an extremely talent Lakers team win around 56 games during the regular season. However, in the last 10 games of the regular season they won out and then proceeded to go 15 and 1 in the playoffs. The greatest playoffs record in NBA history. We’ll see by June where this team stacks up…

Back to MLB.

Nobody’s a lock for the playoffs. But you said that it is a BIG IF for the Giants to make the playoffs, based on their mediocre offense. The only issue I really have here is that the offense is better now than it was last year. The team that was in the playoffs is far, far different than the team that played the first half of the year last year. So while, they aren’t a great offensive team, they are better than the entirety of their stats from last year would indicate.

And given that their team was the best in baseball last year, and the second-best team in their division last year certainly worsened (on paper) with the loss of Adrian Gonzalez, I’d say that there chances are hardly a BIG IF. Anything can happen, and nothing is a certainty, but some things are more certain than others. The past history of other teams has no bearing whatsoever on the Giants’ chances this year, so for you to point to some other teams that missed the playoffs the year after winning the Series is irrelevant. What the 2003 Angels did has no bearing on what the 2011 Giants will do. If you want to evaluate the Giants’ chances, or any teams chances of making the playoffs, look at THAT team and the other teams within their division. Don’t look at just their weakest link and teams from 6-10 years ago.

Oh, you’re such a darling! Thanks for bringing me back to sanity! Have you watched any of the replays of the postseason games on CSN BayArea? I watched Game 6 of the NLCS the other day and it was awesome! KNBR doesn’t come in very well at all this far north, so I couldn’t hear any of the games live with the sweet, sweet sounds of Jon Miller, Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow. But the replays have their play-by-play added so it’s even better the second time around! Sometimes I take it for granted how good the Giants broadcast team really is. Joe Angel a few years ago was pretty bad. I feel sorry for fans who have to listen to jerkoffs like him call all their games.

The main reason I mentioned teams who failed to make the playoffs following a World Series title was because you said:

" …you think the defending WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS, who have literally the entire team returning might not even make the playoffs? I laugh."

I was trying to illustrate my point that them winning a World Series matters little in their chances of 2011. But you are correct that the Padres took a major hit losing Gonzalez. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Giants win the NL West.

I also think you’re jumping the gun on Baumgarner being really good in 2011 seeing how he has never pitched a whole season. As mentioned in an earlier post it’s not uncommon for developing players to take a step back. Roy Halladay comes to mind. Same with Buster Posey. Adam Lind won the Silver Slugger award in his first full season, but struggled quite a bit in 2010.

Honestly man, if you feel you’re slamming your head against a brick wall why are you even bothering arguing with me? I do this because it’s fun…

TBH, I don’t even really know who I would pick to win the NL West at this point, I think the Rockies have some glaring holes they need to address as well.

Have NOT watched any of the replays because I don’t think I knew they were playing them. Kruk and Kuip are the absolute BEST. I never quite mastered synching the radio with the TV using MLB Live online and the pause on the television. Watched most of the series suffering through the fools on the national broadcast. Listened to many of the post season games in the car though and was really superior even to watching it on TV. I’m going to have to find those replay games… WATCHING and listening to Kruk and Kuip simultaneously sounds perfect.

Speaking of the Padres, they just sign Orlando Hudson for 2 years. I like this guy, great defense and not a horrible hitter.

OK, last time I address this issue. I do not think they are a hands down lock to win the division. I DO think that they are clearly the best team in it and therefore are the hands down favorites. When you say that it is a big if for them to make the playoffs, this necessarily implies that you feel they are not the clear-cut favorite in their division, especially given that they don’t even have to win the division to make the playoffs. Essentially you are saying that it is a big if that they are one of the four best teams in the NL. I take issue with that assessment of them, but at this point, who cares?

Yeah, I never quite figured out the whole synching thing either. There’s an FM station up here that plays the games with the KNBR feed, but the delay between them and the TV was even larger than it was when I tried to listen to KNBR and watch Fox for the Series back in 2002. It’s almost two full pitches of delay.

I hope somebody sneaks into Tim McCarver and Joe Buck’s bedroom and slits their fucking throats (they probably sleep in the same goddamn bed). McCarver is absolutely horrendous! Even some goddamned basehead could provide better in-game commentary than him. I could live with Joe Buck if he kept his commentary to about one sentence an inning and they had someone like Joe Morgan or even Orel Hershiser in there with him. But Buck and McCarver have got to be good for at least 2 full points in ratings losses.

I’ve always thought that the natl broadcast team for the Series should be one guy from each broadcast team. Krukow with the Rangers’ play-by-play guy for a few innings and then Kuiper or Miller with the Rangers’ color guy for a few innings and so on. THAT would make for some interesting commentary.

Yup, basically everything you said here is correct.

But really, the only teams I consider locks to make the playoffs next year barring injury are the Phillies, Yankees and Rangers.

Joe Morgan isn’t doing broadcasting anymore and it’s funny how much people HATE that guy. It’s hilarious. There are several “I hate Joe Morgan” facebook groups.

Wait, what? He isn’t doing Sunday Night Game of the Week anymore? What a loss.

I think people hate him because he comes across as a little too analytical sometimes, wihtout using tons of numbers to get analytical. A lot of what he says goes right over the casual fan’s head. Which is understandable. Baseball can definitely be a boring game for the casual fan who doesn’t grasp all the little subtleties and nuances the way he does. Baseball doesn’t have the visceral appeal that a sport like football does, and I think that’s what makes it such a great game. It’s an intellectual’s sport in many ways. Football vs baseball is kind of like Jenga vs chess.

I loved Joe Morgan though. I especially loved how he wasn’t afraid to really lay into some of these sabremetricians and their high value on statistics. There’s no way to quantify the threat of the steal, the threat of the hit-and-run, the threat of the ability to take an extra base and so forth. He gets that, but these MIT stat freaks don’t. That’s what’s great about baseball; as much as the stats and records are so important to the game’s history, it’s still such a hard game to quantify with numbers alone.

Not all about the money??

The phillies offered him the highest dollars per year. Im sure he loves Philadelphia, but you better beleive he wouldnt have taken 5mill a year if he also loved to play somewhere like pittsburg or tampa bay. Shit.

Whos to say he even wants to be pitching at age 38 or whatever. You dont get to keep the money if you retired. He took the highest dollars per year because who knows what’ll happen 6,7,8 years in the future.

I, for one, am happy the yanks didnt get locked down with a 7 year deal for him. Its the Rangers who feel dumb, because their whole team was based around him, for the yankees there will always be another high profile free agent.
