Wait, what? He isn’t doing Sunday Night Game of the Week anymore? What a loss.
I think people hate him because he comes across as a little too analytical sometimes, wihtout using tons of numbers to get analytical. A lot of what he says goes right over the casual fan’s head. Which is understandable. Baseball can definitely be a boring game for the casual fan who doesn’t grasp all the little subtleties and nuances the way he does. Baseball doesn’t have the visceral appeal that a sport like football does, and I think that’s what makes it such a great game. It’s an intellectual’s sport in many ways. Football vs baseball is kind of like Jenga vs chess.
I loved Joe Morgan though. I especially loved how he wasn’t afraid to really lay into some of these sabremetricians and their high value on statistics. There’s no way to quantify the threat of the steal, the threat of the hit-and-run, the threat of the ability to take an extra base and so forth. He gets that, but these MIT stat freaks don’t. That’s what’s great about baseball; as much as the stats and records are so important to the game’s history, it’s still such a hard game to quantify with numbers alone.[/quote]
Hes a complete moron. I play baseball, at a decently high amateaur level. I understand the game as well as one could for not playing professionally.
He says stuff that is downright contradictory. He says nonsensical things about people that are blatantly false. He is consisently underprepared when analyzing rosters. It is so obvious that he puts no effort into learning anything about how a player is playing before commenting. Every single sunday night game the yankees played last season he claimed how Brett Gardner has a below average arm in left field. Thats simply absurd. I watched around 60-80 games last season, Gardners arm in left is much more than average. At one point towards the beginning of the season he commented about how robinson cano is an average second baseman with a good arm. He’s a loon. I cant remember the amount of times Hershisher gave him to opportunity to soften his stance on some of the bizarre shit he said, he never would. On one occasion Hershisher actually explained to him how something he said was impossible to be true, Morgan’s response was “well, that may be so, but I think Im right”. I dont remember the exact comment but it may as well have been Morgan saying the Earth was the center of the universe. It was simply because Morgan had no clue what he was talking about because he didnt bother to do his homework before his broadcast.
Mike Francesa, while a polarizing voice, (and someone I dont usually agree with) aired numerous clips of Morgan’s slip ups. It’s sad some of things that came out of his mouth on national tv.
Of course he says things that are good, at times. But the bad things are so bad that its like listening to bumbling idiot critiquing a book that he’s only read the back cover of.
Fuck that guy.
