Hey guys, so for a while now I have been take BCAA’s in pill form pre-workout and a recovery product post-workout and have been enjoying it. Both have run out now and I found an awesome deal on protein and BCAA powder so I loaded up on both.
I was thinking that now I would mix two scoops of the protein and include one scoop of the BCAA powder and drink that pre and post workout with a banana added post.
My question is the new protein powder already has a lot of BCAA’s in it (as much in one serving as one scoop of the BCAA powder) and would there be any issue with mixing the two sources of BCAA’s? My gut says no but I was just curious.
Come to think of it with two scoops of the protein and one of the BCAA powder I will have over 7000mg of leucine in that shake. Is that overkill and can anyone suggest a better way to work it for optimal peri-workout nutrition… Thanks for any help!
There is no problem you mix both product together and 7g leucine pre-workout is not that much. If you think you have too much you could just use your BCAA powder to pulse or between meals but I suggest you to add your BCAA powder in your protein shake and taking some during your workout too 7g before and 10-14g during sounds something good to begin with.
The literature suggests that Leucine has a 5g absorption ceiling. Personally, I use a leucine enhanced whey blend consumed on the way to the gym then throughout the workout. It has around 8g out leucine in it, but since I consume it over 1.5 hrs, I feel it gives me a maximal effect. Having some sugar in the blend (I just use a tablespoon of chocolate milk) helps as well with energy and the rise in insulin helps your cells absorb the nutrients in your blood stream. A few tablespoons of raw oatmeal + another serving of whey with leucine added until you get that 5g limit makes a great post-workout shake, usually taken 20-30 minutes post-workout.
