Mistake Made by Rippetoe and Kilgore?

Oh, and I forgot about Alternate as well. He fits in with these guys. Does he still post here? I blocked him long ago, so I haven’t seen his threads in awhile.
Bull_Scientist wrote:
Furthermore, if Rippetoe and Kilgore have been wrong about that idea, then does this mean that I shouldn’t ever listen to what those guys have said with regard to any strength training advice, lessons, programming, etc.?
There are stupid questions. This is one

Just kidding. Seriously though, the sooner you get rid of this mentality the sooner you’ll start making gains. Don’t look for “what’s perfect” just get in there and do something.

Also, if a guy is bigger/stronger/whatever than you are (or was), you can probably learn SOMETHING from him.

The only thing I do think is strange, is those BB’ers who are known for moving lots of heavy, high intensity weights, seem to be ‘grainier’, or more ‘dense’?

Dorian obviously, but JJ, Warren, Kroc when he dieted down. And then actual PL’ers and Oly Lifters, just end up looking like they are carved from granite.

This is opposed to Jay, Phil Heath, Kai, Flex Wheeler back in the day, much more ‘round’ and full. And those guys are more traditional ‘BB’ers’.

I know it’s a silly bro-sciency thing to say, and there’s probably examples you can find that disrupt that theory, but I do feel YEARS (I’m meaning decades) of lifting a certain way can slightly influence one kind of hypertrophy or muscle fibers or something to make 2 people look a bit, ‘different’. I’ve read that it’s just genetics, or particular drugs. Idk, just think it’s interesting.

Ohh, and honestly I always felt Ronnie Coleman was so great looking is because he was basically both haha
I have noticed this too. Although it could be that the different ratio’s in muscle fiber led guys like JJ, Branch and Dorian to train differently than the Flex’s and Heath’s of the bodybuilding world. Just a little chicken or egg thinking for you.

In LoRez’s defense, he does actually lift.

I’ve ONLY seen crazy, really specific questions asked by Bull_Scientist, and though I haven’t looked through his post history, have the feeling he actually doesn’t lift consistently. Like he doesn’t want to start until he has the PERFECT plan lol
Yea I’m 90% sure Bull doesn’t lift. LoRez also took like a 3+ month break in the last 6 months. Regardless, my point was that both posters only seem to want to talk about shit that shouldn’t even come up unless you A) train high level strength athletes, B) are a high level strength athlete, or C) are writing a book. I firmly believe that if LoRez didn’t care so much about the things he talks about on here, he would have actually made some definitive progress by now.
Not totally getting your point here. I pretty much talk about whatever I’m interested in talking about (e.g., the relationship between bone density and muscle size), but it really has no relationship to what I actually do in the gym.

And you’re right, I’d be a lot further along if it hadn’t been for that 3+ month break. Psych issues fuck shit up. But in the past 8 weeks, I’ve added a little over 10 lbs of bodyweight, gotten leaner, measurements have increased and my lifts have gone up. I don’t think I’m doing it wrong.

If you want to critique what I’m doing, routine-wise, please do. I’m working with something out of a book, but I’ve had to adjust a few things due to minor injuries.

I’m just on these forums to learn a few things, discuss a few things, and generally pass the time and keep my mind on lifting.

You’re not getting my point because you don’t believe it’s true. Which is fine. But my point is that if you decided to stop discussing the highly technical medical stuff you tend to talk about on here, and never bring up a psych issue or injury again, then you will have significantly more success outside of these forums in the gym than you will otherwise. Your mentality will help you with a lot of things in life. Weightlifting isn’t one of them. You will forever oscillate between non-mainstream programs, and get into mental ruts on a regular basis, because of your mental make up. I told you this sometime between 6 months and a year ago, as did YOLO, and so far, we’ve been proven right.

I honestly don’t care if you agree with me or not, and I don’t have anything against you as a person, I simply believe there is a strong correlation between what you do on these forums and the lack of success you’ve had in the gym.

I’m still confused. Really, two questions here.

 1. What “lack of success in the gym” are you talking about?

 2. About my “mental make up”, what do you suggest needs to change?

I’m genuinely just not sure what you’re talking about with the first, and with the second, I’m open to any suggestions you have since you seem pretty convinced my approach is hindering me. I don’t see it personally, but that doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

I know lots of big strong PLers, and lots of huge ripped BBers, who don’t have a clue about fiber types, or gene clasification. It bogles the mind how they got to where they are, with so little knowlage, must be from lifting.

Yeah, I think sometimes a lot of us would be better off with the mentality of that Planet Fitness commercial “I pick things up, and put them down.” guy. Most of the time just getting out of your own way and moving weight is the best thing to do.

Yeah that’s a very good point. Regardless there seems to be a difference in the ‘look’. I think its interesting, but probably something that one can’t effect much. So when talking about it, should be more just for fun, doubtful it should heavily change someones training all too much.

Alternate == lunk.

If you go through both of their threads it’s actually rather clear.

 1. yours. I don’t believe you have been successful in the gym. We can agree to disagree, because success is relative.

 2. I don’t really want to go through this, and I don’t have anything that would substantially prove I’m right. Just an opinion about your analytical side hindering aggression in the gym/kitchen.

The only good thing Planet Fitness ever did. Ever. But they did it REALLY well.

I still like that commercial even though I hate everything about the franchise.
