Everybody does have access. It’s called education and work ethic. You make choices to limit your access by skipping school, dropping out, or having unprotected sex at age 16 and getting pregnant. Even then, if you have work ethic you can make it happen–I know a number of single moms, some of them getting pregnant at an early age. They still went on to get educations and jobs through college or vocational schools.

It’s not that simple. People who grew up in good environments like to say things like that as if, had they been raised in Detroit by a single mother, aged 25, with 5 other kids, they would have still made the same choices they did when in the better environment. The reality is those good choices we made as kids were actually made for us by our parents or made because of their influence. We also had a community that was on the same page in that regard. It would be wrong to underestimate the effects of culture and environment especially when it comes to young people who lack the ability and experience to be aware of the influence those factors have upon them.
I actually believe from having worked in the inner cities and having lived there that there are deliberately placed obstacles to keep people from getting out. Try standing in front of a class of HS kids who read at a 2nd grade level and see if you don’t ask yourself if something is really wrong at a deeper level than we care to admit. This isn’t the work of lazy teachers who pass kids for the hell of it but a system that is designed to make sure there will be a steady supply of failures.
But Maiden, everyone needs to have enough money to buy a big screen tv, eat steak, and get a massage every week. They can not live that way on $7.50 an hour.

The scary thing is, is that you truly see this argument as this simple. I know you have to really boil things down to black or white to really be able to grasp them, DMaddox, but that’s more of a sign of your intellectual prowess than it is of the actual debate. Do you see no ray of light between keeping food on the table and the power on, and living high on the hog with tvs, steak, and massages?
And this is why you can never understand.
$7.50 an hour where you live, Virginia near Washington D.C., might only pay for food and electricity for 1 person. Here where I live $7.50 goes a lot farther. Why should the Federal Government mandate what a liveable wage is? You want it because it makes you a big deal in your job. By the way how is the ghey making you feel?
Do you think the Democrats want to increase the Minimum Wage, because they see that Welfare pays more? To increase the minimum wage will then give them more room to increase welfare. At this point there is an argument from most people that work, welfare should be decreased.

No, they are doing it because they feel it will get them votes every two years. And what they feel is correct.
Your question falsely assumes they do math, or care about it even if they do. This push has 101% to do with filling vote booths with people who will punch the “D” ticket, and 0% to do with actually helping people. Because, again, best case scenario is a net zero long term change from government mandated wages.
Yes they will have $2 in their pocket rather than $1. But if that $2 only buys what $1 used to, no one is better off than before.
FTR…I’m not a fan of raising the minimum wage; we need adult jobs for adults, not an increase in the wage paid for enrty level work. That said…I thought this was interesting.

I have some gripes with the figures in my county, lol.
HEalth costs are way too low for our area, and $629 a month for “transportation” is about 180 gallons of gas a month. (629/3.50). I get about 300 miles a tank out of my Civic, and it hold 12 gallons, so that is 25 miles a gallon. So… 4,500 miles a month? lol. Too much.
Also pissed at the “$0” for child care once you have two parents. Utter bullshit.

Not going to look up all of them, but the cost of living in my area is insanely low and it has the living wage as higher than minimum wage (living wage for Franklin County KS is 8.79 according to this). Housing looks to be about spot on, unsure about others here.

IMO this is your best argument , I know it is true many places

What are they trying to raise the minimum wage to? Why not $20/hr or $40/hr? If $20 or $40 is too much could somebody please explain the reason to me?
really why would some one raise the minimum wage that high , I would think 2 people could live on $12 to $13 AN HOUR in the PHX market . Life would not be great but it is doable
Well, I’m glad to know you think that way. Incidentally, that happens to be minimum wage. Both people work minimum wage jobs, magically livable. In fact even more so because you’re now making 15/hr, which is above the threshold you set yourself.
Didn’t think about car payment and insurance. the $629 figure mught be a bit low now that I truly think about it.

did you crystal ball tell you that ?

Just thinking out loud, but I think CB gave the correct response. It is about votes even though a higher minimum wage does not help anyone because of inflation.

Didn’t cross my mind either, but that makes a bit more sense. Throw in some maintenance related stuff (tires, oil changes, etc.)? It might be a bit low!

My area seemed a bit high, but after looking at my Budget, yes I actually do a budget, the numbers looks pretty close.
yes I know it is a liberal rag and yes I know it is some one’s opinion and yes I know he will be accused of buying the poor’s vote and yes I think it will work

I agree, but I would like to see the math that brought him to believe $12/hour is the magic number. It seems to me that the minimum wage should be somewhere between $40 and $50/hour.

see we disagree again I think we should abolish wages and make every one work for free , just think we would have zero unemployment and the GOV could pay everybody welfare , food stamps and medical care
Man I hate economic policies these days, if your a student companies try to take advantage of you and offer you minimum wage which isn’t a livable amount I mean I made 13 dollars an hour washing dishes like 7 years ago and now they want to pay you less. ASSMONKEYS!!!
i RATHER BE DEAD BROKE WITH GOOD GRADES THAN BUSTING MY ASS FOR 10 DOLLARS WITH SHIT GRADES, BUT IT WAS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE ALSO GAVE ME GOOD WORK EXPERIENCE, WORKING FOR COMPANIES AT SUCH LOW WAGES MAKES YOU WANT TO DO BETTER.
