I was reading an article on old body builders from way back when and I read something saying that they would usually drink whole milk before a work out to get the energy/protein/nutrients they needed for a good workout. Also they would drink a glass after. Does anyone know anything about this?
Yep, old timers would drink a lot of milk, and then eat honey during and after the workout. Very important — only drink whole milk. When fat is pulled out, they add some shit chemical to stabilize the ‘milk’ and that makes it way worse for you than plain old milk. Remember, if your greatgrandma wouldn’t recognize it as food, don’t eat it. Its shit.
Now, if you mix in some Low-Carb Metabolic Drive or similar, you’ve got one hell of a good drink! Though I don’t know if GGma would recognize that…;D
If you can tolerate milk then I’d drink it. My throat tightens up a bit when I drink the stuff so I’m not too crazy about it.
Today I plan to have some chocolate milk with my pre-workout meal. Chocolate milk is a good choice, because it’s got carbs you’ll need for your workout.
I just got something in the mail from my alma mater, regarding an article from one of my old professors. He was touting milk a the great post workout drink, as its packed with protein and nutrients. I shake my head at this, only because yes it is packed with nutrients, but I would never call it THE great PWO drink. He is behind in the times.

I’ve read a lot of great stuff about milk when it comes to bodybuilding. I wouldn’t be so flippant towards your prof.
big meal…wait 1 and a half to two hours snack i’d say 45 minutes…also depending on the complexity of the carbs taken in and the amount of fat/digestibility of the proteins in the meal/snack.

How far before your workout should you have your snack? Lets say…1 or 2 peices of toast, a little pb, a banana and milk[/quote]
I say experiment. I’ve eaten too soon before and felt nauseous during my workout…even burped up some of my food. Not fun. If it’s a liquid meal you can get away with a sooner time, but for solid food give yourself more time to digest it.
