i dunno what this is all about. from what i’ve seen of the Air Force and Navy, you pretty much get promoted as soon as eligible (as having served in neither, i readily admit this could be wrong). the Army is a little more difficult, and the Marines could give less than a shit…they just wanna kill something.
i’ve got 16 years in the Army (3 Active, 13 Guard), and i think most people are waayyy to preoccupied with promotion. they want more rank/pay, but don’t want to sacriface for it, or even know why they wanna be a leader. shit, i was an E-4 with a E-5 under me, and i wasn’t bitching. there were 10 other guys that would’ve stepped up to take the spot…
maybe you’re being screwed, maybe you’re not. but i know when i get a new guy and the first thing he talks about is promotion, i tend to think he’s gonna be a headache. i’m usually right…
btw, file an IG complaint, not one with the Pentagon. who calls the Pentagon with this crap?
cycobushmaster: I up-scaled my issue only after exhausting all tactful approaches through my entire chain-of-command. I ended up filing an IG complaint through Washington due to the fact HQ-Guard for my state lacked an IG at the time and so by default I was re-directed to Washington. There are many details left out of my explanation here on “T-Nation”; though I appreciate your candor and regardless of what I say here… The depth of my circumstance/issue will not be understood by my critics. Anyway, I will discontinue my attempt to elicit a constructive response from the “less than insightful” crowd here on “T-Nation”.

If using expletives allows you to feel empowered due to a lack of education, I guess that is your only means of communication and I have been remiss talking over your head this entire time. I will be mindful of the fact that your comprehension level is that of grade school. You obviously have your feelings hurt as well which is so evident in both your language and frustration displayed. You have made your insecurities quite apparent in your feeling the necessity to justify yourself to me which is comical. You fall into the category of mediocre and insignificant in life. OT: I thought promotions worked about the same in any job? Proving yourself, sucking up, getting lucky, and knowing the right people seem to be the only things that work in getting promoted. I think it’s best to try as many of these as possible.

To the OP, don’t you think addressing this subject in the “War Room” section would have been much more prudent? It just seems like it was a bad idea from the start…
There is a big difference between how promotions work in the guard and how they work in the rest of the military (active duty and reserves both). I have been in all three, and promoted in all three, and you cannot compare them to each other on the subject of promotions.
I too recently transfered to the guard and was also told by my unit that although I was eligible for immediate promotion (position vacancy), my commander would not submit me for promotion until I had been with the unit for a year. I worked closely with my commander, gained his trust, and he submitted me for promotion at about the six month mark (rather than making me wait a year).
As a JAG, I can confirm your JAG should not advise you on something like this, because JAGs advise commanders. When the commander found out about your complaint, he would have gone to his JAG to discuss. The JAG would have had a conflict of interest had the JAG advised you about the propriety of your commander’s actions. You can always hire a private attorney if you think your legal rights have been violated (though from reading this thread, that seems unlikely).
The appropriate avenue for these kinds of concerns is the IG (going to political representatives, although everyone’s right, is equivalent to a “nuclear option”–not a good way to win friends and influence people).
Who did you contact in the Pentagon? If it was the DOD IG, that makes sense–anyone else, probably impolitic.
Here’s what I recommend (as a fellow T-Nation member). Ask for a personal meeting with your commander. Apologize for going outside the chain on this issue. Find out what you need to do at this moment to get his/her support for your promotion. If you can’t get it, change units or leave the guard for the reserves, where promotions are not as subjective.
