Mike Stoops...

Please come back!

OU’s now at 4 straight BCS losses. I would be one thing if OU played well and the other team just played better, but it’s not. It’s just getting ridiculous how OU continually lays eggs in bowl games.

Four times, OU has come out and played by far their worst game of the season in a BCS bowl.

2003 Sugar Bowl: Anybody remember those angles the defense took vs. LSU? All. Game. Long. Either they all thought they ran 4.1 40’s or they thought Justin Vincent ran a 5.3. Regardless, they ended up flailing away harmlessly as Vincent zipped past them. OU made Vincent look like an All-American – which he clearly was not, as the rest of his career proved – and OU lost by 7.

2004 Orange Bowl: “I’m not going to cover Steve Smith. Surely Matt Leinart won’t throw a 10-yd, so-open-he’s-lonely TD pass to Steve Smith right in the middle of the end zone… three times… on the exact same play.”

2006 Fiesta Bowl: Zabransky is flushed out the pocket to his left, and then throws a damn moon ball across the field to his right. Literally, a moon ball. Damn pass had about a 4 second hang time and went downfield maybe 12 yards. “Big deal,” I thought “there’ll be four red shirts underneath that thing when it finally comes down!” Wrong. One white shirt. Zero red shirts within ten yards of said white shirt. “Were you taking a fucking shit, defense?!! Where in the holy fuck were you?!! You only had 4 damn seconds to get under the fucking ball!!

2007 Fiesta Bowl: OU fans, imagine for a second if an opponent let FB Dane Zaslaw take a draw 57 yards to paydirt. On 3rd and 2. Imagine later, that all their DB’s peel off Malcolm Kelly in the red zone, leaving him literally the only person in the end zone when Bradford hits him for the TD.

Laughable. Ludicrous. Nobody does that. We’d be laughing at them for 10 years because of how stupid they were.

Yet OU did that last night. On two consecutive WVU possessions. Cover Reynauld, he who has caught 12 of WVU’s 15 passing touchdowns on the season, in the red zone? P’shaw!

Sadly, there’s a truck full of plays like these that just defy common sense. It’s as if OU had never played a football game before these bowl games. Every damn year.

OU doesn’t do all this shit in the regular season. Fuck, Baylor doesn’t do this shit in the regular season! But this is just par for the course when OU plays in a damn bowl game.

Different years, different opponents, even different OU players, but they continue to make these inexplicably boneheaded plays in bowl games that they don’t make all season long. You can’t beat much of anybody making these stupid – flat STUPID – mistakes, let alone a BCS opponent!

Do they even watch film from December to January? I’m not sure, because the defense looks so consistently clueless out there that I’m beginning to think that they don’t.

OU is beginning to be an annual January embarrassment. I hate to be ashamed to call myself an OU fan, but yet another bowl game disaster is pushing me that way.

Mike Stoops, OU was 3-0 in bowl games and 2-0 in BCS games this decade when you were here! I’m sure brother Bob would give you up to half his kingdom if you’d come back.

Mike, please come back!

And Bob… you’ve got some serious explaining to do.

Amen brother, Amen. I couldn’t agree with you more. You actually wrote pretty much everything I was feeling.

I just don’t get why we can cruise through the regular season, then lay an egg in bowl games. Just don’t get it.

OU didn’t look too hot last night, but give WVU a little credit there.

Owen is a stud and has done that(break big runs) many times in his career. He also chews barb wired in place of bubble gum and eats kittens for breakfast, nobody wants to tackle him. He’s a 260 FB who runs a 4.6, it’s going to happen sometimes.

Reynaud was wide open because of Pat White’s threat to run on that play, the safety(I think) bit on the fake. They didn’t just let him run free for no reason.

Just a thought from a WVU student.

I’ll tell you why. Three words: YOU ARE OKIES. God can’t stand Okies. He uses little things like bowl games, and having to live next door to Texas just to irritate you.

Oklahoma is the “Moses” of the 50 states. You can see the promised land, but you just can’t go in.

So to use the Moses analysis, we ‘part the Red Sea’ in the regular season, but as we walk through, it collapses on us and drowns us (bowl games).

…or the Red River.

I know it didn’t sound it from the OP, but I do give WVU some credit from coming out and playing hard last night. But c’mon, OU’s seen playaction before, WVU’s not the first team to run it vs. OU. Pat White wasn’t the first mobile QB OU’s ever faced.

This is a recurring theme. OU comes out, plays uninspired, emotionless football and makes more boneheaded, unforced errors in the bowl game alone than they do in the entire season combined.

Pretend you’re a Duke Basketball fan. You watch the Dukies have a pretty solid season, let’s say 27-5, ACC Tourney Champs. They had some ugly games and made dumb mistakes, but overall, they’re a talented, fundamentally sound basketball team that’s among the best in the country.

Then, they play in a Sweet 16 game, and they give up the baseline, they get beat off the dribble, they don’t block out, they don’t rotate on D, they jack up three’s from all over the court, they miss free throws, they commit dumb fouls, etc. They end up losing ugly.

You’re watching, thinking “Those are Duke jerseys, that’s Coach K on the sideline, but this isn’t the same Duke team I’ve watched all season! We’ve played teams just as good if not better than this Villanova team, and we didn’t do this crap vs. them!”

It’s as if half the team has just, out of the blue, forgotten how to play basketball. Sure, some of it is due to the opponent, but not nearly all of it. Not even close.

Now imagine that it happens 5 straight years.

Again, I’m not trying to take credit away from WVU, but this wasn’t even close to the same OU team that spanked #1 Mizzou 3.5 weeks ago. This is the same song and dance as in 2006, 2004, and 2003, and we OU fans are getting fed up with it.
