Meat, eggs, milk, and protein - an informal survey

I tried going pescatarian for month. I was hitting my goals nutrition wise, but it just kind of . . . sucked. Maybe the lack of certain fats threw off my hormones?

And I love seafood of all kinds in my rotation, but only by itself? Nope.

I know exactly what you’re talking about.

But I will inhale coconut shrimp like a bottomless pit.

I’ve had much better results on 2…occasionally 3… large meals a day as opposed to 6 or more. Body composition especially.

The body is amazing at adapting to what we give it to work with… I always try to discover what is optimal though.

Nothing special about protein before bed… daily total intake is what is important. Unless it’s just for satiety reasons.

I used to know this huge guy from some nordic country (maybe Iceland?) and he would just eat two big-ass meals a day (like 2500 calories each), around 10 am and then 5 pm. I never saw him snacking any other time. I kind of want to try it.

Edit: That’s a lie, once I busted him eating cool ranch doritos.

Spicy Doritos are my kryptonite!!!

I typically do 2 large meals with as much protein as I can pack in. If it’s post workout I’ll go up to and over 100 grams

With how polluted our waters are, I don’t see this as viable these days unfortunately

Getting myself down to one huge meal a day and just using protein shakes to PSMF to it has really just been amazing. When I eat, I want to FEAST. Multiple small meals is just killer. I’d rather have 1 huge meal than several smaller ones.

There’s another component to eating ~6 meals daily that isn’t being discussed… digestion.

It’s not really a problem for most on this forum, because we don’t have any super heavyweights (that I’m aware of).
But these dudes have to put down 6-8k calories daily when bulking… there’s just no way to do that with only 2-3 meals and low fat.

So they often eat every 3 hours or so, and walk 10mins post-meal every time just to be able to digest all that food.

Interesting protocol… I’m not a fan of shakes typically. You don’t notice any subcutaneous water retention or anything??

Who actually needs 6000 plus calories besides Shaw and his type?? Realistically that is absurd

I’m not looking for it.

Although I don’t do shakes, minus 1 in the middle of the night. I eat my protein powder like a thick pudding.

I ate small meals for so long that a large meal left me stuffed and very uncomfortable and lethargic. It is difficult for me to believe that would optimize digestion at all.

Every person that tried to help gain muscle who were failing at their attempt said they ate a lot. Upon investigation they usually ate a lot of food, but in only one or two large meals.

dudes weighing 260+ on stage.

The point was really that eating multiple meals per day is beneficial for digestion, even in non-extreme circumstances.

I eat around the 5k calorie mark a day and I’m far from huge. I’m 16 stone when I get up in a morning. 6’ 4” and have a very physical/busy job and life. When I was competing in strongman I weighed around 18st 7lb and was consuming around 6500 calories daily. I don’t consider 6k calories absurd at all

So 1.5lbs is then about 150 grams of protein, instead of 200? Depending on the quality of your meat, of course.

I expected it to be a bit higher - but I’m more surprised by how little protein is in an egg! Apparently it’s only around 7 grams?

Sidenote: I was in the army with a guy who was the national shot-putt champion, he ate 26 fried eggs for breakfast EVERY day!

Assuming lean protein, yes :slightly_smiling_face:

For how small an egg is, this is pretty awesome. But its also baffling how people will only eat 2 at breakfast and think its enough.

Why 26? For some reason two dozen seems fine, but the extra two throws off my nutritional OCD.

I have never understood this.

Kind of a random note, but when I plan meals for people, 30 bites seems to be the sweet spot. So a three-course meal is ten bites per plate, but a ten-course meal is 3 bites.

The best meal should have you leaving and thinking “I just want one more bite.”

But that’s not for lifters. Put a shovel of meat in your mouth.

Your nutritional OCD should be just fine.
