Meal Timing & Morning W/O's

Hello all,

I’m thinking of moving my workouts to first thing in the morning to avoid the dreaded “New years Resolution” croud. how do you time meals when working out first thing?? PWO is the same, but what about breakfast? Should I throw down a quick shake before lifting, or let Surge be my breakfast?

Thanks

I workout first thing upon rising as well. On weight training days, I sip one scoop of Surge mixed in one liter of water. Immediately after w/o, I have the second scoop with 5g or creatine and 8-10oz water. Whole food meal about 1.5-2hrs later.

Works well for me.

Best wishes for a new year at training.

Thanks gnosis,

So you don’t eat anything before you lift, and your 1/2 serving of Surge is your first meal of the day?

O.K. I’ll give that a try.

You’ll learn to love the AM workouts. Gets you ready to go for the whole day IMO.

Anyway to try and help. Yes the pre/during Surge is a great way to go if you have no time prior to waking and working out.

I in this sit. just mix both scoops up, drink some on the way to w/o and then finish it by a few minutes befor my w/o is over. I will then follow training with either another scoop or two of Surge or a simple carb source and Low-Carb Grow! Like some oats or simple cereal, taost. ETC…

If you have more than an hour or so. You may want to put down a small meal. Some oats and protein.

Either way I think the during w/o Surge is great, and better than just slamming it before hand. By taking it in throughout the w/o you get constant carbs and pro. in your blood and wont get the Blood sugar crash befor your w/o is complete.

Oh if you have 3 hrs or so I I usually do. I have a nice regualr P+C meal in this case. fruit, and omelete, oats, etc… Oats are great PRE w/o giving a nice sustained source of energy for the upcoming battle.

Hope this helps,
Phill

Thanks Phill,

I’m looking at having my work clothes packed the night before, getting up, hitting the caffien, driving to the gym (approx 20min), working out, then showering and heading to work.

Sounds like Surge will be my new best friend!

I just started doing morning workouts and I have to admit I love them. I feel more alert and ready the rest of the day. Don’t have to deal with 99% of the idiots at the gym (college gym). If I do cardio (3 days a week) i love the feeling of energy it gives me as well. I do the same, Surge, and creatine with a meal around an hour later.

it’s a real ball buster for me to get it on in the a.m. but its so worth it. i’ve noticed much better recovery on the days i lift in the morning. so much so that any heavy c.n.s. type stuff i definitely schedule in the morning. i think it’s simply because i get the full benefit of twice as much food i’ll eat those days . rather than just the two or three meals i’ll get if i lift afternoon or evening.

I do the wake-up-and-hit-the-gym thing as well, and Surge during and after the workout works very well.

And I have to pipe in and agree that once you get used to it, working out in the morning rocks – I am usually in by 6:45 AM and out by 8, and even the Gold’s where I work out in Arlington can’t build up a critical mass of squat-rack curlers by that time.

I’m a morning workout person as well. I usually wake up at about 4:45am and straight away have a protein and carb sports drink which seems to be similar to Surge (Surge is very expensive to get in Australia so I have to use something else on my currently limited budget). This is to stop any catabolism that may have started during sleep (not a good situation to work out in). I’ll start my workout at 5:30, during which I’ll drink one serve of Gatorade and near the end start another serve of the P+C drink, finishing it off after the workout. I’m usually out of the gym by 7am at the latest and will then head home to get ready for work. By about 7:45 I’m ready for breakfast and will then have 1 cup of oatmeal made as porridge with 2 scoops of Classic Grow! and 1/2-1 cup of low fat milk plus some fruit, usually a banana and some type of berries.

With the big hit of complex carbs from the oatmeal I’ve found that I have sustained energy and I don’t get excessively hungry and want to have something sweet with refined carbs for a morning snack at work. i don’t suffer “sugar crashes” anymore during the day either.

Ben

I do pretty much the same as the others listed, wake up at 7am, eat a large bowl of the 13g protein 10g fiber Kashi. Then before entering the gym around 9am i drink 1/3 of my NLarge2 PWO shake with a caffiene pill then after wards i finish the shake and head to work and just steadily eat things throught the day, fruit, premade sandwich, protein bars and whey low carb protein shakes ill drink as well. I just try to keep eating nonstop pretty much lil by little keeping something in my stomach.

Had my first morning workout today. I got to the gym at 6:00 (an hour later than I wanted to). It sucked getting up, but I did have a good wotkout and the free weight area was almost empty. THanks for the help guys.
