Big Show is my favourite high flyer.
I think you are spot on with this post Sentoguy. I would like to further add to your point by pointing a finger at the UFC for the games that they play with fighters. Making matches that favor certain fighters. Staging the venue to be in the home town of the fighter that they want to win. Giving better dressing room areas to their favorite fighters. Playing with the walkout music etc. In McGregorâs case as well as Bisping and others in the past not matching the best fighter up with the champion so that the person they like can hold the belt longer.
Does anyone above the age of 18 really believe that each UFC weight class represents the single best in the world? Perhaps a few weight classes might be able to claim that title. However, Dana White has done his best to manipulate each division in order to increase ppv and profit other ways. One more example is how White discourages grapplers, wrestlers in particular from entering the UFC.
Dana White wants as many fights to stay on the feet as possible as this plays to the fans who mostly want to see two guys slug it out in the middle of the octagon. And only a minority of fans actually understand the ground game. Itâs insulting to those of us who enjoy a real mma match.
I am hoping that Bellator will rise above itâs current mediocre status and give the UFC greater competition. If this occurs that might help keep the UFC honest. But, as long as Dana White is involved keep your eye on each fight. Put aside who you think is the better fighter and always think first, âwho does Dana White want to win and why?â Keep in mind most of the time he may not have a favorite as he wins either way. But many times he has a favorite and does many subtle things to help that favorite win.
It has become more about money than about who is the very best in the world. And this reach is far deeper into the sport than most fans realize.
Looks like that lion vs bear show was WWE worthy.
Although l kept up with MMA for 15ish years, l have lost my interest in last couple and rarely watch any. After styles matchups disappeared, l lost some interest. But wrestlers (and Danaâs monopoly) probably killed it for me. I have to give props that on top wrestling is a dominating/stifling activity. But l enjoy the ground arts on their own, far more than within the mma format. Fascinating to watch the setups, reversals, sub attempts.
I was always surprised SanShou didnât make a bigger splash. It seems pretty consumer friendly for average viewer.
As a wrestler in high school I remember thinking there was something âninjaâ about Judo/Jiu Jitsu. Our coach brought in a former Olympic Judo trainer to teach us some throws for fun.
During the Q&A he told us about how they had to change the rules of Judo competitions at one point because a few wrestlers started entering competitions and cleaning house. They would refuse to lock up and shoot double leg takedowns, the Judoka at the time werenât trained to sprawl. Now you have to have a throw attempt before you can shoot the legs in Judo.
I still want to take a few Judo classes. It would be fun to âhit someone with the whole world.â
Nothing to lose for Connor. Worst case scenario he gets knocked out early. Probably expected by most. Best case (arguably unlikely) he gets an early punch to connect he wins and makes the sport of boxing and mayweather look completely silly. Theyâll probably argue mayweather wasnât in his prime or some crap
Well, Mayweather clearly isnât in his prime⊠heâs 40. He also hasnât had a fight in 2 years and is fighting a bigger guy in McGregor. That being said, Mayweather should still win this fight easily. Connorâs style and punching power makes him dangerous for maybe 3-4 rounds, but once Floyd figures out his timing and his distance, he will coast to an easy decision. This is a bit of a circus fight, but I will certainly watch it. Just get ready for everyone crying and feeling ripped off when itâs a boring decision.
Bring on the spectacle.
Mayweather is old. He wonât be the same guy who fought Andre Berto in 2015. If Floydâs decline has been steep, maybe, just maybe, McGregor will land a lucky knockout blow.
This wonât happen. Even a diminished Mayweather would destroy Conor. The fight would be fairer if it were a kickboxing match.
In other news, Oscar De La Hoya has publicly called on the American to fight the winner of Golovkin-Alvarez. A Golovkin victory over the Mexican could thereby lead to my dream bout: Mayweather versus Triple G. If Money beat the Killer Kazakh, he would be the greatest boxer ever.
Mayweather fighting Triple G is as likely as the Irishman defeating Mayweather.
Indeed I wonder if McGregor could even beat an amateur champion much less one of the best proâs of all time. MMA is not boxing.
I agree with most of what you said.
But, Mayweather would get destroyed in a kickboxing match (at least, if leg kicks were allowed). His whole sense of distance would be horribly off and his defensive game would make him a sitting duck for copious Leg kicks with little to no chance for defense. Very quickly his mobility, power, and heart/will to continue would be eroded until he either just flat out quit, his corner threw in the towel, or Conor landed something on him.
I donât think it would even take copious leg kicks. If you have never trained to take legs kicks I can not imagine one would withstand many. He would probably kick him once or twice close the distance and knee his head off.
I am working the press conference in NYC on thursday.
cant wait to hear the shit talk.
And to be honest- the shit talk will be amazing.
presidential level
after that- like @FightinIrish26 said -
how long will money
make it last - so it looks legit.
MMA- no chance- Connor -
or any respectable fighter would take Money to school.
boxing
Mayweather only takes fights he is sure he can win.
He waits for two things.
His opponents show weakness.
or its a giant payday.
but every fight he takes is a GIANT payday.
so he waits and scouts and takes only what is in his favor
Mayweather only fights - that he can win
its not luck.
that all being said.
conor is PFP shittalk champ.
fight money mayweather
retire
if the recent websites and programming he has opened arent enough of a clue
but what do I know
You know, it would really be epic if either of the unlikely scenarios you mentioned happened.
McGregor somehow actually lands the unlikeliness punch ever on Mayweather and KOs him.
Or Mayweather actually decides to take De Lay Hoya up on his call-out and actually fights GGG sometime in 2018.
OR
EVEN BETTER.
MCGREGOR KOS MAYWEATHER AND FIGHTS GGG.
Imagine the amount of money that could be made out of that bout. I think McGregor would be up for that.
TBH, this fight makes me a little mad just because I want to see one of the top second gen of mma strikers fight one of the top second gen grapplers(khabib), and this is just taking Conor away from the mats.
Its a dream fight ![]()
After watching the low class press conferences that both fighters participated in I have even less interest in who wins, or how, than I did before.
I worked the press conference at Barclays center-
It was a super low budget event - I was understaffed all day.
I work in the entertainment business - and lets say Barclays is somewhere I work
regularly- and boxing is always a low budget event.
I got to see -
â I dont care how it is Im wearing dis coatâ
and
âyo form like voltronâ in person.
A very pro-connor audience.
a Mayweather camp - or euntorage that was just difficult to deal with.
bad haircuts no sleeves- bad outfits abound. Its a mix of roids and hip hop.
while the main room - the arena itself is being broken down I am outside
what we call the practice court where the Nets practice - we set up what
we call a âstep and repeatâ which became an interview area.
Ariel Helwani - and every other MMA blogger/media type was there.
I hear this irish voice ask
âcan you tell me where a rest room isâ
Its John Kavanagh. and a few friends.
I direct them to the nearest restroom. The guy Im standing next too- a coworker is an avid bodybuilder- and a huge MMA fan.
while we are busy waiting out- Kavanagh and his little posse come out of the rest room and are joking
âwhos is this huge fooking blokeâ - and look at his boy
âfat necked and crooked earâ
we shake hands exchange some lip service about being fans- he is polite and offered a thank you for putting up this event.
and again jokes with my co-worker about his âdietâ his boy cracks some jokes about this must be what happens in Brooklyn
while a nice non sequitor - its not fun to see first hand the sleeziness and miserly
kind of people that run the fight games.
This event is HIGH very HIGH on the list of shit events that I have worked on.
that all being said- I still take Mayweather.
How can you not - he is the superior boxer- if not THE superior boxer.
A lucrative day for me- got to see a few people and fighters I am very interested in - but so shitty an event Im glad its behind me.
And that sentence sums up everything. As you said, a shit event and a shit fight.
I agree- on both issues.
GIANT press conference-
low end equipment vendor
under budgeted labor
under budgeted facility
while I enjoy mcgregor -
Id rather see him defend what ever UFC title he is claiming
and Id rather see mayweather- stay retired - he has absolutely nothing to prove
Sure he does. He has to prove that he can pay off his IRS debt.
it true - he owes like 26 million or something crazy
He must be some kind of simpleton, or he didnât hire the proper people to keep up with his taxes. Everyone knows that the one entity that you never screw with is the IRS. ButâŠapparently not him.
