Y’all who know boxing better than me let me know- what exactly happened? From the looks of it, Aldo got smashed by a big counter when he threw a big punch himself.

I dunno man, he should’ve known better than rushing in with a loopy combo, but he, it could have worked. I can’t imagine a qualified striking coach giving this advice “suprise him with a bum rush”, since Conor is a counterfighter.
Maybe they thought Conor would crumble under the stress, so a rush could work.
Maybe Aldo got head-strong and denied any corner advice.
Maybe Conor really got in Aldo’s head, and he lost control.
I got a feeling Aldo would blow himself early on when he walked in jittery as hell, however, I suspected at least 1 or 2 rounds.
I don’t think this match learned us too much about either man. Conor keeps his cool no matter what, still has beautiful counters.
Great control of distance and drawing out Aldo’s rush (he was clearly in Aldo’s head and frustrated him) so he could counter him!
That said, whenever a fighter get’s KO’d in just 13 seconds it is tough to tell much about how the two fighters really match up skill wise. I think Edgar will realistically get the next shot at McGregor with his KO of Mendes, but I would like to see Aldo come back and get another shot at some point to see if he doesn’t fair better with a more conservative approach/better fight plan.

Maybe Aldo can avenge his loss like Cain did to Jr when Cain got KO’d. But I’ll still take McGregor cuz he’s in Aldo’s head and always will be.
When I first saw the KO I thought maybe Aldo didn’t bring his right hand back to his chin when he threw his left. But McGregor just timed his counter punch too well.

What is more interesting than the actual fight is to watch how Dana White will now make sure that McGregor keeps the title as he is a big draw for many reasons and Ireland PPV dollars go way up.

Before the fight I was leaning towards Aldo. Figured he’d get started with a variation of leg kicks and a few jabs to get loosened up and wear Conor down a little. It’s a hell of a lot harder to move well on a bad leg.
From the moment I saw Aldo walk into the Octagon though I knew he was going to lose. He looked as shaken and jittery as I’ve ever seen him. It’s like the magnitude of the pressure wasn’t realized until he walked out.
The UFC hype machine is often bullshit, but once in a while the hype is absolutely deserved and I knew conor was going to be a great fighter when he dispatched Poirer and made it look ridiculously easy. The true test was of course, not aldo, but Mendes and it still stands to reason that Conor’s weakness is a wrestle-fucker with a full camp behind him. On the feet though, nobody matches this guy, nobody. I may be getting overexcited here, but I feel like Conor is the shining example of what the new generation of MMA fighters will be about - truly seamless fighting skills, rather than the distinctly mix-and-match characteristic of the previous generation.
As for what happened with Aldo, straight left down the pipe as aldo lept in and didn’t cover his entry. Simple, efficient, beautiful.
I was most impressed with the accuracy, and this is probably why conor scores KOs so easily. He is really, really accurate with his straight shots, the top of his fist connected perfectly with the tip of aldo’s chin. Thats a dangerous dude.
McGregor was definitely in his head, Aldo has rarely started that aggressively…sure leaned into that punch too. McGregor manages distance well and is as fluid a striker as the UFC has had…grappling not that impressive tho - if he moves to 155 prepare to see Dana protect him from the more beastly grapplers until his takedown defense improves
edit - maybe it has improved, who knows? the fight was 13 sec!
Don’t know much about MMA but from the clip I saw the other day, other dude just walked into a nice straight left hand. Rush in wild against a counterpuncher and you’ll get tagged. Get tagged with 4 oz. gloves, your lights go out.
I mean, it was a nice punch but the fucking guy led with his face. Who feints a 1-2 to a taller opponent’s chest while they’re coming in like that? Awful tactics.

He put everything he had into that punch and still caused a little damage with it even after his lights went out. That exchange reminded me of the “fight” between Apollo and Rocky at the end of Rocky III, except this was shorter.

i don’t think that punch was going to ko mcgregor, conor timed it perfectly and was only in range because he saw the opportunity to land the big left…mcgregor was actually backing up after he landed and rolled with Aldo’s shot. it was a terrible tactic as fighting irish already elaborated on and i think the build up to the fight ultimately caused Aldo to get sloppy in that exchange. I really wanted Aldo to win and I thought he would use his wrestling and huge BJJ advantage to win, but never even got the chance

I agree. A small step back and Aldo was off-balance and extended. That punch would have hurt - maybe even moderately more than it did - but hardly a KO shot.

To say he has no ground game is a gross exaggeration. He defended 3 of Mendes 7 takedown attempts. One of the successful TD’s came from a stupid flying knee at the beginning of the fight and he got straight back to his feet. He also defended the sub attempt pretty damn well.
Lets not forget this is Chad Mendes too, he was always gonna have the upper hand in the grappling. The only guy he couldn’t dominate with his wrestling was Aldo who has godly TD defence.
McGregor badly tore knee ligaments before that fight which disrupted his preparations too.
McGregor also dominated Max Holloway on the ground after tearing his ACL.
Is his ground game as advanced as Aldo or Edgar? No. But he definitely does not have zero ground game. He is 100% a great fighter and will continue to show this.
Also how is he being protected from grapplers when his next fight is either going to be Edgar or RDA at lightweight.
I think if dos anjos wins Conor fights Frankie, if cerronne wins the ufc pushes for that fight instead

Funny these were my thoughts exactly. Stylistically Cerrone presents the most favourable and most marketable match-up. I thinks Edgar presents a lot of problems for Connor and will be avoided if at all possible. I am not sure they could really justify Connor fighting anyone other than Frankie if Connor stays at 145. He is way overdue for his shot.
