MattyXL's Tears in a Bucket Log

I have no faith in Clausen, and the other shit they have at QB is even worse (Matt Moore and some guy named pike?) They also have a shit ton players entering free agency, and I think Steve Smith is gonna be more of a problem than a benefit. I would go QB and somehow try sign a FA vet QB.

As far as the Falcons go, they may have to look at TE in the draft and a pass rusher cuz Abraham is getting old. Also after Roddy White do they really have another receiver? [/quote]

Abraham is 33 FML what does that make us Matty?

Panters have a top 5 offensive line and three very good RB. Yes the WR are shit without Smith however if they did draft Cam and just fucking ran the ball you never know. Jets did it and Baltimore did it. So they might be following that blue print.

Dude I feel ya, I try not too listen to sports players ages, Derek Jeter is ancient, what is he 36? OH MY GAWD!

Its definitely a good blueprint to follow i.e young QB good oline and rbees, but lets remember one thing theres no QB like the SANCHIZE!!!

Hope you’re right Matty, there has to be football next year. Both sides piss me off, just sign a deal and lets move on all ready.
Regardless of who the Panthers draft I think they’re a bit away from good, they could surprise us all but I have my doubts/hopes. If they somehow got good fast the NFC south might just be the toughest division in the league.

Hey guys a couple a questions I would love you to chime in on…

  • Is a Pendlay Row still a pendlay row with a supinated grip? Most times I use a pronated grip, but I seem to feel it more in my lats with a supinated grip.

  • Do you guys prescribe to the notion of getting enough weekly sets of a muscle group in. For example making sure you do 15 - 20 working sets of chest movements? Maybe this is more of a BB mentality?

Curious on your thoughts.

^ Matty right now I am all about changing things up. I have done way to much pressing in my life so I am taking a break from most chest stuff right now. Really working on my imbalances this shoulder thing has really opened my eyes. I think the rest of this year is going to be about fixing things before I get back to the big 4. After that it will always be a 1:1 ratio, of pull to push and legs.

As far as the Pendlay rows go I’d PM Hungry4more or post in the BOI, H4M is the master of them and I have never tried them. Blind guess would be do what feels better.

Regarding amount of sets, the best gains I’ve ever gotten have been when using 5/3/1 BBB and DC training neither of which are near that many sets. Granted I’m far from a body builder and am mainly looking to get strong. DC worked great, grew fast but dieted away most of those gains, guessing that was a result of too little base strength. Once I reach my strength goals I will switch back to DC.

Hey MattyXL,

I always believed the keys to Pendlay Rows were:

The Pendlay Row. Row the bar against your lower chest while arching your upper-back & without extending your hips or knees.

* Pull Fast. Pull by arching your upper-back powerfully. The Pendlay Row is an explosive exercise. Move the bar fast.
* Arch Upper-back. Try to make your shoulder-blades touch. Pull with the elbows. Bring your chest forward. Look forward.
* Touch Lower Chest. Where the bar touches your torso depends on your build, hip position & angle of your back. Pull the bar where it touches your body for the Bench Press.
* No Hip Extension. The hip angle doesnâ??t change, hips donâ??t extend. Only your upper-back, shoulders & elbows move.

It would seem difficult to me to be able to touch your lower chest with a supinated grip as opposed to a pronated grip (where you could really flare your elbows out). Ultimately I say go with what you feel though and forget what they’re called. Call em MattyXL Rows!

As for prescribing to getting enough sets in, to me, that depends solely on goal. If strength is primary, you may not care so much about direct calf, delt, bicep, etc work (unless it’s needed for assistance). If size is the goal, especially in terms of BB, then it should be somewhat significant in terms of achieving your goals.

All that training though should really be supplemented with your diet to truly achieve your goals more efficiently.

Hey Matty, I would say that the answer to both of your questions is really dependent on your goals.

I agree with ddot76 on Pendlay Rows. I suck at them at the moment but the way he describes is how I do them, Ny goal is to create power in my back though and not necessarily get a big back so take what I say with a huge grain of salt. If you feel them with a reverse grip then go for it. There was a huge debate in the powerlifting subforum about these rows which you could check out.

Sets are the same. I’ve gotten my best strength gains using intensity not necessarily volume. But I’m doing higher volume via the HP Mass program now and I feel pretty strong. I’m with DJHT on the press:pull ratio and make sure I get my pulling in by doing that work in between my pressing sets.

Ddot - Excellent points, Im gonna start calling mattyxl rows, that would be great! My goals are strength 1 and size 1B, espescially with the bigger muscle groups. So I guess thats why I always try to get a lot of direct work in with the bigger muscle groups, not so much with the smaller muscle groups, I have always used dogma from both camps (PL and BB) it kind of satisfies all aspects of my training mentally and physically.

James - I lurked in that thread but choose not to get involved in pissing wars, and agreed with your post in there whole heartedly. I also found my strength rise with less volume, and even to a certain extent slightly less frequesncy, but I do want to keep getting bigger so I have to take the good with the bad.

Thanks for the advice guys, its truly appreciated!

Too much pendlay row talk, the gym was too crowded today and I didn’t get the chance to do them. I haz a sad ;(

So… hai <3

my gym was effing packed and effing hot too, glad to be outta there nikki

NOTES: So I dropped the weight and increased the volume on the flat bench to transform my form from a BB type bench to more of a PL style, the last set I taped. I’m trying to keep my back tight and not flare my elbows, so please comment and critique. I am aware of this last set I possibly wasn’t going deep enough, but this is a big change for me and an obvious work in progress. Truth be told I certainly wasn’t comfortable and my shoulders did not feel great. If this doesn’t relieve my shoulder pain I may put flat benching to rest forever :frowning:

Did you arch your back? That may be the difference for the shoulder pain.

Crowded gyms suck.
It’s just the group of PTs, they’re so annoying. They put their stuff on equipment that they’re not using, they’re small and scrawny as fuck and they think they’re the shit. If they were serious trainers (both their jobs and for themselves) I’ll have some respect for them.
Anyway, I’m done with my rant lol

This summer’s gonna be a scorcher, I might have to get over my disgust with beaches and go just to stay cool.

I’m absent for 1 or 2 days and have to catch up on a solid 2 pages of text lol.

NICE deadlift PR, Matty! I see 500 in the near future

Larry what can I say bro, Im trying to catch up to you man! Outta curiosity I love Ashy Larry too , hes a great dice player, but is your name really larry?

Nikki, I did I actually did band pull aparts so I can mimic the feeling, Im just all fucked up with my bench right now, I almost did a fucking GVT session with the benching a lil too much for this old man

I sometimes have issues with bb rows- that unless I use an underhand grip it kills my bicep tendonitis

there was a glenn pendlay article not too long ago here

Underhand kills your bicep tendonitis or pronated? I have bicep tendonitis as well, and when it acts up (thankfully not in a while) I cant touch BB rows, no matter what grip

Regarding your bench you may try to change the bar path more to below the nipple. It’s hard to see in that video but it looks like you’re touching above the nipple. Moving the path at or below the nipple has helped my shoulders and helped activate my stagnate pecs. It also helps me to keep my elbows in. Takes some getting used to but it might be what you need.

Haha, no my name is Adam. I used Ashy Larry as a name for a skater I made on some Tony Hawk game I think, and then I used it for a yahoo e-mail account, and then it eventually just stuck to everything I use on the internet lol. I even used it as my KU.edu e-mail login. I thought it was just some random login that wasn’t important, but for the past 3 years my professors all e-mail me at ashylary@ku.edu haha. No one has said anything yet so it’s cool

Bench used to really bother my shoulder too. I did a couple of things to correct it and I’m not sure what had the most impact. One was to do floor presses for a bit and do heavy weighted dips. The second was to really work on my leg drive to keep my upper back tight against the bench. The arch doesn’t mean jack if you’re not also pushing with your legs (at least for me). What I see is that you’re getting into position then not staying tight and I bet you’re not using any leg drive. The leg drive will force your back into the bench which will give you a much more stable platform which protects your shoulder more. I also bench in the power rack and set the pins so that I only have to slide the bar out which keeps me tighter too. But my bench sucks so take all of that advice with a grain of salt. But it’s a LOT better from when I started out.

Watch the “dave tate bench press” series that’s on here for a great lesson on how to bench properly. I think a lot of it has a geared lifter bent to it but the fundamentals are the same.
