This is true. I just had a bit more drive when it was “for” something.
Mostly Guinness. The odd Heineken. I’m not really that fussy about beer. My faves are probably Guinness and/or Smithwick’s, Peroni for lager, and I enjoy a Trappist beer when I can get them.
Going tomorrow, which is their last one of the year. It’s a bit awkward because I’d ideally like to play for the Third XV, which is basically all the shite lads like myself, but they don’t actually train and I need to learn the ropes a bit. I’m sure just being flung into a match would do it but I should probably have touched a ball before then.
So the only option is to train with the First/Second teams but they’re actually training for actual matches in reasonable leagues, so I don’t want to be the cunt getting in the way. They know that, though, so the fact that they’ve said to come down means it must be alright. We’ll see how it goes.
I’m thinking of joining a tag league to help me get up to speed even more quickly, too. I don’t know how much crossover that has with actual union, but it has to be more than zero.
Tag wont have a lot of carry over depending on what position you end up playing. But it will still help with ball handling, passing skills as well as running formations a little. If the team has said come along then thats what i would do. They are probably happy to show you the ropes as long as you show up each week and put some effort in.
That is, in fairness, exactly what I hope to get out of it. Position-wise I would say I’m not built to be a back, but I think that’s a pre-Lomu attitude. Saying that I’m probably too slow to be a back would be more accurate!
That is basically what I’m banking on. It’s good timing in a sense since this is their last training session before Christmas and it’s not a particularly serious/important one.
We’ll see how it goes. Looking forward to it and just happy to put myself out there a little.
Weight back on the up to 238.0 today but no “for some reason” about it as I had two disgustingly rich chocolate cookies last night.
Training [Strength]
Squat
4x3x120kg (265lbs)
1x7x120kg (265lbs)
One off a PR-equalling set, but I’ll take it given how crappy it’s been lately. However, 19 reps at 120kg is probably a volume PR overall.
Bench Press
3x10x50kg (110lbs)
Just focusing on technique. Light, but felt decent.
Seated Leg Curl
3x15x50kg (110lbs)
Meant to be dumbbell Romanian deads but I tried to hit a set with 50kg DBs and got 5 and it knackered me out. I think I’ll go for ~30kg DBs next time…
I’m not much better at pullups, even as an ex-climber.
I remember being able to feel slow tempo fat man pull ups in a way I rarely can for other back exercises. And since I’ve decided I should probably grow a back, I’ll try and remember these.
Called off thanks to rain, which is… I mean, it’s Ireland.
Anyway not the worst timing because I’m knackered and my back is pretty sore. Means I won’t be playing until after Christmas, which is annoying, but whatever.
Early next year I’ll head to a Third XV game and try and meet the lads I’ll actually be playing with.
Back home for Christmas. Working from home, but not tons to do, so decided to hit a high(er)-volume session. Going to be eating a lot this week anyway, so I might as well put it to good use.
No weigh-in today but my mummy said I looked less fat.
I am so lucky this never happens at my gym. I tend to train later at night which means it is less busy, but even when I go earlier I always get a rack, bar and bench if I need one.
