It’s the caste system. One of my good friends is from that region and he explained to me the system largely prevents social movement, and if a person is born impoverished and diseased they are going to die impoverished and diseased because those who are able to help in the upper castes are brought up with the mindset that is ‘their’ lot in life.

First off, I will say that I think DB’s comments are in part an attempt to get a reaction out of me. I don’t particularly care about India since I’ve only visited the country a few weeks in my adult life, But I do want to address this right here.
Ethnic minorities as a whole strive to maintain their culture across the board. You’ve singled out Indians when in reality they are no better or worse in this regard. Humans as a whole are extremely tribal creatures.
Honestly, I think you’re better off aiming your ire towards an ethnic minority that isn’t showing income, education and family stability levels above the population average along with below average crime rates.
