A cop will taser you for the most BSy reasons, while producing his baton is hard work where he might actually break a sweat. Also, pummeling a guy, even when done legally, means lots of paperwork and bad PR. You can’t argue with media who has a photo of a beaten up face.

Clearly you don’t much about either weapon. Using the end of a baton a proficient operator (German policeman with training) could break most of your ribs and crush joints with several basic movements. Not hard.

Just as a sad aside, a note on ecologic paleontology.
Before the colonization of the 17th century, Indians of Virginia and Carolinas would burn patches of forest in the fall, and in the winter and spring, deer and other animals would gather in the new glades, and the hunting was thereby easier for the Indians.
By the time, in the mid-to late 17th century, that whites penetrated from the Eastern Seaboard, they found nearly impenetrable, continuous, second-growth forests. So many indians had died of measles (and perhaps smallpox), well in advance of the expansion of white settlement, that they no longer had hunters, burners, or their whole society.
