I am trying to follow the Massive Eating Program. I usually workout in the moring around 5:30 A:M. My moring meal is Protien Powder w/water. mixed with UDOs oil. During and after my training I will have a carb/protien drink.
Question is should I be eating carbs with my first meal since I have not ate anything for 6-10hrs? My workouts have not suffered do to the lack of pre-workout carbs.
It would stand to reason that it would be a good idea to add carbs in a pre-workout meal/shake.
the last time you had carbs was either your meal right before bed, a snack after dinner, or even worse - at dinner; which means you’re 8-12 hours without carbs. That’s 1/3 to 1/2 of your day w/o carb. Can’t be good for muscle glycogen levels.
your blood sugar is low when you wake, therefore you have no “instant” energy for your body to use during your workout. Even your carb containing drink during workout takes times to digest for usage. Means your body will either go to muscle or bodyfat to gets its energy for the actual workout.
I train at 5am as well. Can’t do it without carbs or I get dizzy half way through.
I take:
Pre-workout (1/2 hour before - 4:30am wake up) - 1 scoop AST VP2 hydrolyzed whey isolate, 3 tablespoons AST DGC (the carb; this combo is the equivalent exactly of Biotest’s Surge (24g hydrolyzed whey; 46g D-Glucose); I just like that I can control the amount of D-glucose which I lower to 36g), 1g L-Leucine, 10g l-glutamine
During - If longer than 45 min workout expected I’ll mix up 1/2 scoop Gatorade powder (18g carbs) in 1L water; or just water
30 mins Post-Workout (6:15-6:30am) - 1 chicken breast (or 3 scrambled eggs), 1 piece rye toast w/peanut butter
1 hour Post-Workout - 1 scoop AST VP2, 1 cup blueberries - blended
1 tablespoon of Udo’s Oil taken here
Rest of the day is high protein, low-moderate carb, moderate fat meals.
I don’t think it’s a wise idea to take your Udo’s oil before 1 hour post-workout. You need to ingest proteins and carbs that will get into your system quick. Fiber and fats will only slow the digestion rate way down by lowering the insulin response.
I personally get tired as hell if I eat any kind of carbs first thing. I would just have a really good shake and some BCAA’s before the workout and then loadup afterwords.
