Didn’t realize you had a log!

For the box squats, I would pretend the box is 1000 degrees hot. It accomplishes a couple things: for one, you wont “plop down” and take the weight off your feet (because you would burn the hell out of your ass!) Imagining this should force you to stick your butt as far back as possible - really reach back - so that you are still totally supporting yourself with your legs at the bottom of the movement (even when you’re touching the box). This will keep you tight and ready to spring up as soon as you can.

The goal is to touch the box without it providing much support. If the box was hot, you would want as little of your tush resting on it as possible to prevent burnage. And you would spring up hella fast.

Enjoyed your training video. Considering you’re coming off a surgery, I think you’re doing stupendous. One thing I’ve learned is to not start the DL from a static position (hovering over the bar in a squat position like you do). It makes a big difference for me.

Quick suggestion on your box squats (if I may), but to help you sit back more, don’t start with the bench directly beneath you. Push it back a little farther, so that you have to reach back for it. If it’s too far forward, you know that you don’t need to reach back for it. Also, don’t look in the mirror, because if you don’t know how far back you’re going to have to reach, you’ll ensure that you get as far back as you can. The ascent looked good, but getting a little further back will help your glutes/hams tremendously.

you are really very hard on yourself!! i thought your vid was awesome! you certainly use your legs / knee extension more than i do on those rack pulls and i’m not recovering from knee surgery.

That’s true for touch and go squats to a box but not “box squats”. There is a pretty good definition on the main page in the squat article.

But the thing is I always thought of myself as a soccer player with a lifting problem, but now without soccer I can only focus on my lifting…and well, I realize my lifting is pretty much fucked! On the plus side, now I know I have a lot to work on, and I like that. And with the rack pulls…honestly, I don’t know if I’m doing them right! I’m basically just using them to transition into DLing proper - like one would if they were DLing off of boxes.

Ok lovers - Finally finished writing up Cycle 2.

My goals are:
-To get stronger on the main lifts so that I have a good strength base
-Increase ROM (hopefully get ATG, but that might be lofty)
-Fix my glute firing issue
-Get 10 consecutive pullups (pronated) by the end of the year (could also be lofty)

Again, this is going to be a 10 day cycle, so I alternate a lifting day with a cardio/conditioning day or an off day.

Lower 1
Front squat 5x8 - starting light
Box squat 5x5 - loading weight
SL Press 4x10
Rev Lunge 4x12 - going to try these again and see how the knee fares
Step ups 4x12
Hanging leg raise 4x10 - hate these but I think i need to add some sort of core work

Upper 1
Push Press 4x6
Seated OH press 4x8
Floor press 4x8
Pushup variation 4x12
Dips 4x7 - I’m trying to get to sets of 10

Lower 2
Trap DL 5x5
Rack pulls 5x5
Box squats 5x8 - lower riser and lower weight
super set 4x15 each

  1. Glute bridge - hip abducted externally rotated
  2. KB goblet squat
  3. Hip thrust with band
  4. KB swings

Upper 2
Superset

  1. Pullups 10x3
  2. Pushup variation 4x12
  3. Face pulls 4x12
    BB Row 5x5 - going heavy with these
    WG lat pull 4x12
    Kroc rows 2x Max

This cycle will take me about 6 weeks, which I think should be a nice way to transition back into Oly. After this I’ll probably switch to a 4 day split and d 2 Oly days, 2 full body days (but I’m getting ahead of myself here).

I also believe that my glute firing issue is really a hip flexor issue, so I’m going to try to elongate my hip flexors AND strengthen the glutes and see if this solves the problem.

I already have a spectacular update!! Wait for it…

Today in PT I got to play soccer! YAAAAAAY!!!

Basically I was given the task to shuffle from one dot to another dot about 10 feet apart, and at every dot the soccer playing PT guy would pass me that ball and I would pass it back! Like wall passing. SO MUCH FUN!!

Of course I was all smiles and giggling and having a blast. At first my touch was all wonky, but after a few passes it was just like always. And let me tell you, I was giving homeboy a run for his money!

Also, my PT lady said I can start juggling. More YAY!!

All this all after I changed my Avi last night to my soccer pic because i was pining so badly to play. The universe has given me a nod of approval. nods back Thank you.

And now I send out all my positive vibes back out into the universe…

Funny you mention hip issues - I just learned at PT last night that I have horrible hip tightness on my affected side and that is causing me all sorts of problems. Hopefully stretching out your hip flexors will fix your glute problems. The human body is such a complicated machine…
