Marvel Comics Civil War #3

Some nighttime before bed ramblings:

I was an avid comic book fan a long time ago. I still have my collection and was looking through it a couple weeks ago while cleaning the attic (holy smokes. I have never seen spiders that big before. And sonofa…they’re fast too). I realized how much I missed the stories and artwork and decided to go to the local comic book shop this past weekend while the wife and kid were visiting family.

I ended up spending 5 hours there. The store owner was a totally cool guy who brought me up to speed on the happenings in the Marvel and DC world the last decade and a half. He also literally let me sit there and read. Read, read, read tons of comic stories over the past several years.

Well, my favorite character was Thor. Don’t know why; he just was. His storyline over the years has been amazing; I couldn’t believe what they had done to my Thor! How darest they?

He returns in issue #3 of Marvel’s Civil War extravaganza. Bought #1, #2, and #3. Can’t wait for #4.

Thor is back. Don’t like the side he has chosen apparently, and I have my own opinions on whether this is the true Thor, but they brought something back.

Thor versus Sentry. Someone needs to kick Sentry’s ass…it’s gotta be Thor to do this.

I was an avid comic collector when I was younger and I remember the big stories lines that rocked Marvel Universe like: Venoms first appearance, Hulk and Bruce Banner being seperated for the first time. The insueing ass whooping he handed the Avengers. The Secret Wars. Daredevil kicking Spidermans ass for like the tenth time. Apocolypse first appearance in X-factor. The Beyonder getting absorbed by Doctor Doom.

I stopped collecting about 8yrs ago, i’m about to start up again because this Civil War is really getting interesting.

You have NO IDEA how glad I am to hear something like this!

Civil War is the perfect thing to get back into comics with. It’s a simple (not meaning simplistic, simple in the way that the Ramones or Run-DMC was simple) story that anyone with basic character knowledge can follow.

It’s weird, but you’re not alone, BS…I’ve sold at least five copies of the CW series to guys just like you: our age, used to read comics religiously, lost track, then heard about this thing that sparked some interest. And all have loved it just like you.

Last thing: if you’re gonna do what the Buff’d one did, please go to your LOCAL COMIC BOOK SHOP!!! Not fucking barnes and Nobles.

Your local comic shop is the hardcore gym; Borders or whereever is Bally’s.

The owner of your local comic shop would love to help you. He opened up the store BECAUSE he loved comics!

I just finished posting in the Venom thread. You got another prodigal son right here. I’ll be hitting the local comic shop this weekend.

I’ll bring my own son along. He’s been begging to get into my collection for a while now. But I get nervous when those 7 yr-old grubby paws get close to my bagged babies. Maybe I’ll help him start his own collection.

I am actually about to make a trip to a comic book store to pick up this series (I have been reading them when I go grocery shopping at Kroger). Last one I read was where Thor touched the hammer and shot into the sky, will undoubtedly buy these though. The House of M series is something I want to catch up on too, I read the synopsis at various sites but I wanna get the series as well.

Haven’t touched comics since the early editions of Spawn.

Used to be hella into Spiderman. Used to draw a hell of alot too. Would love to get back into it.

This series kicks much needed ass! I can’t wait to see Thor square off with Sentry.

I would get the Captain America Civil War spin off as well as it goes into more detail about what he is thinking and who he goes to for help. I bought Spiderman’s but they really didn’t add much that wasn’t already there aside from showing that he is having second thoughts about the decision he made.

Thanks, I’ll take a look at that as well.

House of M is a great series as well Ren… you know about it already but still I highly reccomend it.

I never really fell out of touch with my comic book interests, but I haven’t been able to find a comic book store for the longest. I had to be satisfied with barnes and nobles and their limited (albeit sufficient) selection of graphic novels.

But I recently found Silent Bob’s comic book store in westwood. Which is great because every copy of any comics he has worked on are signed, and there’s a SHITload of memorabilia and different shirts, etc (love my superboy and venom shirt).

If you recall from the movie Dogma, the wings that ben affleck and matt damon wear as angels are in the store and you can take pictures in front of them and stuff (above is a cell phone pic of my gf in front of it)

They also have the full on leather outfit that ben affleck wore in daredevil… very cool shit.

It’s really a place you can hang out and enjoy that sort of thing again, very fortunate to have found it.

I used to buy comics a very long time ago. Still haved them today. But I am so far off Marvel’s universe…what is House of M? Looks pretty cool…

is a pretty good summary.

Am I the only one who just finds CW…I don’t know … wanting? It just feels like too much of a ploy to me. Not nearly as bad as some recent ‘events’ (I’m lookin at you DC, and don’t get me started on the reasoning for the Red Mask to even exist, I’m angry ), but it just isn’t there for me. Then again, House of M didn’t do anything for me either, overall it just seemed very uneven.

As a disclaimer, I try not to spend much on comics these days so if a series doesn’t work for me quickly, I just drop it.

Damn Straight! I’m headin’ back to The Green Dragon next week. It’ll put a dent in the gas tank, but it has always been one of the coolest joints in this town, since I was a kid.

The artwork these days…astounding.
I especially like the way they use color now to do the “shading”. I come from a background where the inks over the pencils created most of the shading using the “cross hatching” approach.

And the way they draw the women in the new comics…whoaa Nelly! Holy mother of … I bet these artists begin drawing the women and then have to take a “bathroom” break every once in awhile if you know what I mean.

In my “readings” this past weekend, I learned about the old Image comics line (I know, where the hell have you been?). I truly think, based upon what I’m learning, that the revolution in artwork began with the Image line.

I saw that Marvel upped their art for amazing stories like the X-Men “world without Xavier” series. Simply, fricking awesome. Wolverine with one hand cut off? Cyclops with only one eye? Awesome.

I’m going back there to buy the Marvel Ultimates graphic novels and the House of M. And I’m going to bring ALOT of money to buy every issue of any title I can find related to that world without Xavier storyline.

Ooops.
Maybe it wasn’t “world without Xavier”, but the “Age of Apocolypse” series.
