On the today show with jon steward he said she was asked to name her favorite cream pie and she answered “banana” can anyone explain why this is funny to us europeans ?
I’m assuming “banana” is self-explanatory.
seriusly ? that what all the fuzz where about… mainstream media lives on the ability to shock people without saying dirty words huh ?
i thought it was something with massacheucets not eating banana cream pie because it was a yankee dish or something… well thanks !
The correct answer was Boston Cream Pie. It is a type of pie. Boston is a city in Massachusetts. She is running for the Massachusetts Senate seat. Do I need to explain any further?

This is the correct answer, and I’m surprised so many people think its about sex… The whole bit was about her being clueless about Massachusetts… for example, saying the Red Sox player was a Yankee’s fan, her campaign misspelling Massachusetts, etc. She did a lot of things that would make people think she didn’t know anything about the state, and so they joked that she’d say that she’d want a banana cream pie instead of a Boston cream pie.

Hokay so … There’s this man named Curt Schilling … He’s is a legendary Boston Red Sox pitcher who helped rally the Red Sox in 2004 to one of the greatest comebacks in sports history to beat the much hated New York Yankees and go on the win the world series. He did this with sutured ligaments in his left foot and ankle and he literally had a bloody red sock because of it (which is now in the Hall of Fame btw). In case you didn’t know the Red Sox HAAAAATE the Yankees and vice versa … it’s one of the sports greatest rivalries.
Annyway … Curt Schilling also hates the Yankees and turned down lucrative offers from them. He was also toying with the idea of throwing his hat into the Senate race to replace the late Edward Kennedy which Martha Coakley was also in the running for. Mr. Schilling is a die hard Republican (conservative) while Ms. Coakley is a Democrat (liberal).
Mr. Schilling, being a beloved Boston sports icon by all Red Sox fans across the world, also lives in Boston and is a critic of Ms. Coakley. In a local interview with Ms. Coakley, she was asked about what she thought of some of Mr. Schilling’s comments about her, and her response was, “What does he know, he’s a Yankees fan,” hoping to win over the home crowd of Boston thinking that Mr. Schilling had indeed played for the Yankees.
In a town/state that loves it’s baseball team (we live and breath that shit (some people name their kids after the star players I shit you not … even call in sick when they lose terribly … it’s like the way some British people feel about their local soccer/football clubs) to not know who Curt Schilling is and what he means to the fans AND to say ON THE AIR that he’s a Yankees fan illustrated that she is completely out of touch with her constituence. It was a big gaffe from her and for her campaign to represent Massachusetts in the US Senate. So, now you know why her saying Banana Creme Pie is her favorite Creme Pie over Boston Creme Pie (which is from the capital of the state she represents) is a joke that illustrates she doesn’t know jack shit about Boston.
You know, they say if you have to explain a joke, then the joke was no good … but I counter with this, what if the person you’re explaining it to is foreign and doesn’t get the nuance? We get this post.

The Daily Show will give you the gist of the news that actually affects people, rather than the 10+ hours of random stuff on the news networks about fashion and other useful shit, plus the completely retarded commentary.
The Daily Show is the only show out there that will REALLY call bullshit on people. They call it on the left, they call it on the right, they call it on EVERYONE. Fox News will never call bullshit on the right, and CBS will never call bullshit on the left, so why would I ever watch them when they BOTH have their heads up their asses.
In fact, if it isn’t on the Daily Show or it doesn’t appear in one of the 5 headlines I have that auto-rotate on my iGoogle page, I don’t need to know about it.
Lewis Black once said “I don’t have a problem with Bush, really. I didn’t have a problem with Clinton, really. I made fun of them both, because I have a problem with AUTHORITY.”

I agree … to a point
John Stewart is a self-proclaimed Democrat … he tends to argue more with his Conservative guests (understandably … the man doesn’t agree with some of what they say) than his Liberal guests. I mean the man argued with fucking Lou Dobbs for 25 minutes. Lou Dobbs was one of the most balanced and fair analysts on CNN and Stewart does not and would not consider that maybe Lou Dobbs (who is an economist and an independent while John Stewart told poop jokes for 20 years before landing the Daily Show gig mind you) might have a point or two that old Stewart had not thought of. Like I said, I don’t blame Stewart nor do i think he shouldn’t do that, he’s straight forward about his opinion and reiiterates time and again that it’s HIS opinion. A lot of people are too brain dead to form their own opinions and take their cues from Stewart (It’s not his fault people are brain dead … I’m not blaming the guy … he’s a fucking comedian).
I think what V was getting at was (and this has been said numerous times by Stewart himself) that it’s a comedy/entertainment show making fun of the news and the people who are in the news. It’s tough for younger people (who are the shows main demographic) to understand that, while John Stewart and the Daily Show tend to get the facts straight, the show presents the news in a sarcastic way ALL THE TIME and this is not news, it’s a comedy show and should not be a source of actual facts. They do present a lot of the their stories (read ALL of their stories) with nothing BUT sarcasm. The younger naive kids take this as a way to approach ALL news outlets - with sarcasm and cynicism which leads to bitter and misinformed citizens.
