Happy birthday brother!

Hey man, just catching up on the log and saw this. I was exactly the same way and even pulled my groin at one point after doing the 8. I liked it for a few weeks, but just fell off because all my lifts went straight down when doing it.

Also, just realised you posted that 2 weeks ago. Haha my bad. Great stuff going on over here though man. I used to do similar training with my little brother as well as lunges and pull ups and such. Its a great bonding experience and something kids love. I’m a counsellor at a week camp over the summer and the kids love to climb on and do bodyweight shit. Its pretty rad. Keep it up brother and happy belated birthday as well!

Agree 100%.

I did it for awhile and found it’s just too aggressive for a warmup. Perhaps I was holding the stretches too long.

My big issue was mostly the groiners and such. I felt I needed a warm up to warm up which made it unnecessary to me imo

Unlucky! Like I said, it didn’t do my groin or knees any favours after a few weeks. Maybe it works better for people whose mobility is garbage as a way to improve it without spending too much time. I’ve found Lazy Lifter to work way, way better.

I’ve started doing this now as well and am enjoying it (thanks to reading it in your log). I used to dread my warmup, now I don’t mind it at all and so far I’m not noticing any issues with it, so I’ll be sticking with it for awhile.

That’s exactly how I feel about it. Warm-ups suck, so the shorter an effective one is the better.

Week 1

Meant to start this on the Monday, but it was simply easier to start today. Easy didn’t strictly apply, a week off the barbell did me good but left me a tad rusty.

5x192 lbs, under 6 RPE

Was rusty AF, took all the work sets to find my groove again.

Supersetted military press/T-bar rows
Press 50 total reps at 88 lbs: 15, 15, 10, 10
Rows 100 total reps at 88 lbs: 25, 20, 25, 15, 15

This was a little taxing

Supersetted hammer curls/DB shrugs

Question: does anyone have much experience of getting almost uncontrollably angry with minimal provocation? It happens to me occasionally and I wonder about it because there never seems to be a reason for it. Regular shitty stuff makes me angry just like anyone, but it’s just standard grade angry and doesn’t take me off guard.

This stuff comes - apparently - out of nowhere and when it does I go from normal, calm and happy to wanting to destroy someone or something. I don’t, obviously, but it feels oddly primal: it’s like raw anger was dumped into my gut, my heartrate goes up and it feels like what I should be doing is bunching my fists, putting my head down and hurting something as much as possible.

I have no problem controlling myself when it happens (again, obviously, or I’d probably have had a couple of holidays at Her Majesty’s pleasure by now) but it’s a pain in the backside. Once it passes, which is usually after an hour or so, I feel drained and sometimes very sad.

The only explanation I’ve got is that it’s part of my fight or flight mechanism but I can’t think of why it gets set off like that. I mean, anger is the emotion which feels most natural to me, but that’s because it’s the one I’ve grown most accustomed to as its been the most common one experience on a regular basis throughout my life. It’s only since I met my fiancee and stepson that being happy has become the norm.

Happens to me occasionally but usually I just clam myself down by giving myself a time out. Interesting enough, I find that it tends to happen more frequently during periods of easy training/no training. Perhaps I use training as a form of anger management. Then again, most other aspects of my life does kinda go to shit when I stop training so who knows. Oh and on a side note, apparently exercise withdrawal is a thing so that’s interesting.

I had this exact thought the other day

Although,to add to what Benanything said, since we dream of one day lifting X or looking like Y maybe not training/training light makes us feel like we are not going after our goals, life’s not going where we want it to ect and that causes some frustration too

Effectively that’s what I do too. Funny you mention that it happens when you don’t train, I should try to remember that and see whether my episodes happen when I’m not training. I did train today, but that was the first time in about a week.

I get that, but I don’t think that’s what causes it for me. I used to freak out when not training but not any more. OK, if I had to go over a week without I’d be pissed, but more because I enjoy training. This last week was planned to be a complete deload.

This is me in a nutshell. I’ve actually had a year of counseling in my mid 20s for anger management. It’s a perpetual issue for me.

Just yesterday my wife and I were at a crowded mall and there were probably 5 very small incidents that nearly sent me sideways.

For me, it’s flat out heredity. My mothers side of the family has severe anger issues. I do my very best to stay on top of it, which, is always being aware of your state, and never ‘letting yourself cross the line of no return.’

I’ve literally blacked out numerous times in fit of rage, it’s not pretty.

Just make sure you stay on top of it, and protect your close family from it. I went down that path for awhile before I got help to understand it better and how to mitigate it best.

I won’t go into the detail as others have, but I am VERY similar to what you have just explained. You’re not alone, and yes it sucks and is very draining. But usually I end up just feeling bad for my closest family/loved ones as they are the ones who have to deal with me in these little ‘episodes’. Deep breathing, some time alone (I often just go lay down for ~1/2hr) and then hug my wife and that will often get me over it.

@IronOne @littlesleeper thanks guys. It’s nice to know it isn’t just me. So far, I’ve managed not to cross that line. I might look into counselling too, just in case.

First official training of 2017.

Today’s training:

Lazy lifter

Stiff bar deadlift

5 pull-ups between first three warmup sets - couldn’t use the neutral grip as that rack was in use, so did chin-ups for the first set and overhand grip for the other two. Elbows weren’t big fans, although the actual moving myself to the bar was pretty easy.

5x330 lbs, under 6 RPE - double overhand
5x379 lbs, under 6 RPE - used my left hand as the underhand, did not feel nice
5x434 lbs, 7-8 RPE - felt shitty, groove was off. I’m beginning to suspect that I need to start pulling double overhand on all my sets for a while. Since I hate hookgrip, I’ll use straps (gasp!).

SGDL

3x5x258 lbs, all under 6 RPE

SSB squat, Oly shoes
50 total reps at 280 lbs: 25, 15 (first 10 paused), 10 (paused)

These were fun

Supersetted calf raises/ab wheel

Calves 100 total reps at 143 lbs: 25, 40, 35
Ab wheel with 33 lbs extra: 15, 20, 15

So squats were a lot of fun. DL felt pretty shitty, partly because I’m unused to the stiff bar - but also because I think I’m starting to develop a slight imbalance because I’ve been using my right hand as the underhand since I messed up my left bicep. It just feels harder to get into a good starting position with the mixed grip, so I figure using straps should be a good solution as I work my grip a bunch in other ways (Kroc rows and Fat Gripz shrugs especially).
