Woke at 264.8 lbs, looking similar to yesterday. Not sure where this drop is coming from. For the short time it’s happening in I can only think dehydration or reduced salt. Last two days especially I’ve eaten quite large dinners so whatever causes the drop is happening during the day

If you’ve started to stand up more or walk a lot around, that could do it, walking affects my weight immediately.

Not noticeably. Same job I’ve been at for the past almost two years now. I guess maybe because it’s the third week back from the holidays that the moving I didn’t do over the break is starting to have an impact? Because now I think about it the 264-6 mark was where I was sitting pre-break…

You’re a smart man @mortdk

Ultra is closed because of the fires, so had to figure out what to do. A day out during peak I can live with, but the way it’s looking this could be multiple days and that isn’t great.

So I went to Elite. Or Lime, as it is now. I’ll always be the first to admit I was wrong, and I was wrong. They didn’t just not fuck the gym up, they improved it. All the old faces are there too. Caught up with a couple of people while I was there.

So now I have to figure out if I want to switch back, but that’s a story for another day

I’d appreciate if it stopped, I’m eventually trying to meet you in the middle (secretly) but these drops are putting it further away!

I don’t think it’ll keep dropping unless something is actually wrong. Which I hope isn’t the case.

An hour taking my time

I trained at Elite/Lime again because I knocked off work a little earlier and Ultra wasn’t open for another half hour. I have to say it was nice to be back there again, and it was nice to be able to just rock up when I wanted.

While it doesn’t really matter, this is how the two stack up in respect of material things:

Opening hours
E/Lime 24/7
Ultra four or five pm to eight pm Monday to Friday (opens early morning and lunch too, but I’m at work then so I don’t count it), seven am to 10 am most Saturdays

E/Lime 1
Ultra 0

Location
E/Lime 20 minutes from home, 15 from work, five from munchkin’ school, 15 from Mrs KO work
Ultra 25 minutes from home, 10 from work, 20 from school, 20 from Mrs KO work

E/Lime 1
Ultra 0.5 (further from school)

Cost
E/Lime $15/week
Ultra $31/week

E/Lime 1
Ultra 0

Equipment (I’m going to break this down)

Competition spec
E/Lime 1xmonolift, 2xsquat stand, 3xsquat bar, 3xbench, 1xpower bar, 3xdeadlift bar, calibrated plates
Ultra 1xmonolift, 1xsquat bar, 1xbench, 2xpower bar, 3xdeadlift bar, calibrated plates

E/Lime 2
Ultra 1

High quality PL equipment
E/Lime 3xsquat rack, 2xhalf rack, 3xbench, 4xDL platform, 2xbow bar, 2xSSB, 1xcambered bar, 1xfootball bar, >5xstraight bar
Ultra 3xhalf rack, 1xbench, 3xDL platform, 2xSSB

E/Lime 1.5
Ultra 0.75

General strength/BBing equipment
E/Lime DBs to 170 lbs, 2xEFTS adjustable bench, 1xForza adjustable bench, incline bench, reverse hyper, GHR, 2xback raise (90 and 45 degrees), leg press, belt squat, lat pulldownx2, seated rowx1, cable stationx4, hamstring curlx2, leg extensionx2, various hammer strength style plate loaded machines
Ultra DBs to 88 lbs, 2xadjustable bench, incline bench, belt squat, 2xlat pulldown, seated curl/leg extension, chest supported row

E/Lime 1
Ultra 0.25

The scoring isn’t weighted really, it’s just a way of comparing the two. Zero means one is clearly worse, below one means ok but could be better, one is par, above one is very good

As it is, it works out as E/Lime 7.5 and Ultra 2.5. The 2.5 is almost entirely based on equipment because opening hours and cost are so much worse. Take those out and it’s closer, with E/Lime at 4.5.

Which is a bigger gap than I thought initially no matter which way I look at it.

None of this matters as much as something a friend raised when I talked about this: which gym offers better environment for long term progress. I took that to mean which has more guys to chase and chasing me. At Ultra, Jake is the only one with a bigger total. One guy squats more than I do but benches around the same and pulls less. Also consistently louses up his meets. I think there might be one or two guys I don’t see that bench close to or more than I do but outside that, nada. Which I hadn’t thought about until now, in fact.

E/Lime without me even thinking about it much has three or four guys totalling well above me and at least close to 10 who are stronger than I am on one or more lifts. It also most definitely has more powerlifters. Like, a lot more. Ultra has what, three including me? The rest fuck around in novice meets, sometimes, which means fuck all.

That’s kind of a big deal, when I look at it like that. I think I may have been getting a little too chummy at Ultra, and a little too comfortable being one of the biggest and strongest guys there.

I think it’s pretty clear what you should do.

On a skim read, it seems like Lime wins on every front. Pretty comfortably as well.

Whoa, wildly expensive. I realize it’s Oz dollars, but still. I belong to two gyms and my total is less than $50 a month, about $75 Oz.
