MarkKO's Training Log

Awesome news man! I hope to one day come close to this myself.

Funny story, Mrs KO is a government social worker so I hear some shit. This week, a woman with severe mental health issues tried to sell her two year old on gumtree. It didn’t work.

I’m hoping the TRT will be that for you. I almost cried with relief when I got my apnea diagnosis. I’d normalised feeling like hell, so I noticed a change as soon as my sleep improved. Doesn’t matter how short now, I wake feeling ok as long as I use the CPAP.

Ok, cool. Thanks, appreciate the post. No wonder they use sleep deprivation as torture.

Oh my bad, I misread that to mean 595 in comp

That’s a major major win right there. And should probably be food for thought for someone who’s struggled with depression and can count the number of good nights sleep on the fingers one foot.

Got you. Although if I had the option of 595 or 605 for a third attempt in meet and I’d get a PR total with either one, I’d go 595 because the odds of getting it were better.

I would definitely recommend this digitally confused person to have a sleep study that hopefully the NHS covers should this individual be in the UK.

You might have the option to do the home study, there are just a few wires and things to hook up.

@j4gga2 I thought I might enlarge on the number selection issue, especially when I comes to big round numbers. Because my thoughts are interesting, right?

On the one hand, I’m doing this SOLELY for numbers - same as anyone in the sport I would think. Except it’s just in the sense of a bigger total. That isn’t a specific number. The most specific it gets is, I need to hit x, y and z to make my total bigger. Unless something unmitigatedly shitty happens I’ll have other meets so I may as well give myself the best odds of improving my total. So I shoot for the smallest increment I can in peak, which is what Greg mandates. We’re carrying as much fatgiue as we’re ever going to, so trying anything more a five pound increase on our last PR is just dumb.

Then in meet, our third attempts range from 103 to 105 per cent of that fatigued max in peak. You feel great on meet day, but you don’t want to blow your load early. You’ve got six heavy singles to take (second and third attempts) over the day, and your third attempts are loads you’ve never taken.

For me that’s where things get critical. I know without a shadow of a doubt I’ll get my second attempts because I’ve gotten them in peak and I’m completely rested on meet day so they’ll be a lot easier (this even applies if I’ve MISSED those numbers in peak btw, because that’s what happened last meet for bench and deadlift).

What I haven’t done before is any of my thirds. Now, I’m very confident in Greg’s system and I’m confident in myself BUT I’m also cautious. Regardless of circumstances, what will provide the best result for me is doing everything I can to guarantee I hit my third attempt. So I take the lightest option in my range, 103 per cent. While it’s an unknown, it’s close to my second attempt: usually five to 15 pounds heavier, and since my second should have come up smoothly I know that’s well within my capabilities. I could go to 105 per cent, but that’s going to be 10 to 25 pounds heavier than my second and that’s getting into some dicey territory. I should be able to get it but there’s also a much larger possibility I might not. I don’t need that kind of negativity.

That probably says a lot about my mindset.

Until I’m in a position where I’m legitimately in the running to win something meaningful (for me that’s a podium in a field of at least six other guys all as strong or stronger than I am) I’m not going to need to push any of my thirds. Right now I just need to make my total respectable, and for that I can probably do better using the lightest possible attempt.

I have actually just signed back on to the doctors. I’ve got a few avenues to explore first, mostly around swollen tonsils etc. But its work in progress.

Best of luck brother. Pretty sure my tonsils are borderline abnormally large, which I’m sure doesn’t help.

Thanks man.

Mine have been infected on and off since I was a kid. Pretty sure that’s the culprit

I don’t know whether to laugh or be shocked!! People are weird !

That’s one of the less fucked up ones

If your second absolutely flew like RPE0 would you not then go 105%?

Great news on the antidepressants and the CPAP - not surprised by this at all. In fact, am motivated to use a new oral device that I have as I haven’t been sleeping well lately.

I read a book by a Psychiatrist about depression and he said it’s usually temporary and while he is anti pharma, he recommended antidepressants as a bridge until you’re able to get off them, but that you should get off at some point.

Good job!

@mattjp I’d probably stick to 103%. I’m just cautious, and much happier walking away thinking I should gone for 105 than wishing I’d gone for 103

Is it that splint/mouthguard thing?

Woke at 267.9 lbs, looking maybe a little more bloated.

It’s a mouthpiece that holds your bottom jaw forward, takes some getting used to, but I couldn’t handle the CPAP. It worked for a while but then I ran into a whole host of problems.
