@IronOne a like wasn’t enough, that was perfect ![]()
Woke at 217.8 lbs looking decent. I think the drop is mostly dehydration.
Also, it appears we have an extra canine. Meet Charlie
Simba is our first, 10 months old female American staff cross pitbull (@The_Myth I finally answer your question).
Charlie is 16 months old female (inhales) German short haired pointer cross bull terrier cross greyhound cross American staff cross Irish wolfhound (previous owner supplied DNA test).
I think I’m going to need to start making some kind of shake to sip on throughout the day. I’d rather not use protein powder, so I’ll have think if what to chuck in it.
Why, you ask? Because it’s either that or eat an extra meal per day. That’s workable when I’m not at work; and sometimes workable when I’m at work; but not workable all the time and that’s the key for me.
If you ask why the extra meal even? Because going beyond 220 lbs without becoming a blob is going to take my body beyond what seems to be it’s ‘natural’ weight. I can jump past 220 lbs easily if I’m happy to get fat - except I’m not. Chubby, yes, because I can live with a power belly. In fact, I’m living with one.
The last couple of weeks has shown me I’ve gone from trying to spin my calories out across three meals to having to cram my calories into four. If I’m busy and don’t eat that fourth meal, it’s a bit of a fight to get the calories in across three. So I think starting a shake is a decent idea, since it looks like I’ll need to up calories again in the not too distant future.
So, exactly how horrible would Gatorade and milk be?
Very horrible I would imagine ![]()
I think you’re on the right path there Mark.
I would google powerlifting shakes/smoothies. Haven’t done it, but milk and Gatorade, come on.
You see, I don’t see how it could be particularly unpleasant @mortdk. I mean, milk is pretty nice. Gatorade is pretty nice. I can’t imagine it would taste much different to Froot Loops.
Now, getting some extra protein in without powder could be difficult but I’m thinking powdered oats.
Cute dogs, pits used to be a nanny dog in the US before people started to breed them for dog fighting.
Why no protein powder?
Good question, now I think of it.
I know! People are always surprised when I tell them. Simba adores kids, and she’s getting better at not knocking them over with her adoration (munchkin excepted, she learned she isn’t allowed to knock him over early on; and babies she seems to instinctively know to be really gentle, like very small puppies). Charlie seems calmer with people but absolutely desperate to say hello to every dog she sees.
Some good lookin dogs there mate ![]()
I second @Irishman92’s question. I assume the meal needs to be somewhat balanced in terms of macros, right? It also seems that a good shake has something to nail down the consistency. Protein powder can accomplish that while adding some damn good flavor.
I used to make smoothies but they’re a little more reliant on being cold than a shake so they require some refrigeration. My co-worker brings a shake to work and it’s like two meals worth of calories. He soaks oatmeal in milk overnight and adds his weight gainer to it and just sips on it throughout the day. Substitute weight gainer for regular protein powder and I think you could have a decent option.
1.5 cups of dry oatmeal
1.5 scoops of protein powder
however much milk is needed to get the consistency right
if you’re mixing with a blender-like machine then you can throw in a banana for some added flavor and good consistency
That’d give you about 965 calories, 129g carbs, 19g fat, 67g protein if you used 1.5 cups of whole milk and added the banana. I’d probably use a different source of milk.
I use unsweetened vanilla almond milk and it’s 30 calories per cup. That’d be 45 calories vs. 225 cals of whole milk.
That’s just what I’d do and have done. It’s simple and travels okay. The oatmeal tends to settle so it’s not as good as it is fresh (even after shaking it up). I must warn that this doesn’t do much to fill you up compared to actually eating 1.5 cups of oatmeal, the banana, and the protein shake separately. It sounds like you’re just trying to get the calories so this would work.
I never understood and refuse to really try to understand it. If it’s not an all time world record it isn’t a record. If you wanna be proud of your state record sub juniors, sub equipment, in some back yard fed, in a state no one ever lifted then fine but personally I think you are a coward to fight for those. I don’t have the money to travel to meets across the country where there is gonna be massive competition and what not but I’m not comparing my self or even concerned with the Fed records, the state records, national records or any of that shit. The only ONLY number I care about is the 915 set by Sam Byrd in the 220 Squat w wraps. Until I pass that number I don’t give a shit what “records” I might break or what trophies I might win.
I think I might get me a little blender…
They’re pretty awesome. It’s so good to see Simba have a friend now.
Woke at 218 lbs. Looking decent.
Personally I couldnt handle all the fiber from the oats tore my stomach up to much. With that being said I usually landed on something closer to
1 cups of oats
1/2 cup baby rice or 8 oz sweet potato
1/2 cup maltodextrin
1 scoop whey
1 cup milk
2 tbsp peanut butter
and some ice cream if felt like tasting deliciousness
Most big breeds/working dogs aside from really weird specialized ones are like that.
As long as they are well socialized and trained right/have healthy outlets for their energy they are normally very friendly dogs when appropriate (at least around people,
I’ve noticed herding dogs are a bit different. Not aggressive, just very focused on their human and very, very dominant. At least, Aussie breeds like heelers and kelpies. Collies seem more ‘normal’.
Today’s training
Kind of tired/flat again. Fourteen weeks in and starting to feel it.
Leg extensions, GHR sit-ups and broad jumps
Squat, mono
5xbar
5xplate
3x2 plates/231 lbs - felt identical to one plate
3x3 plates/319 lbs - open belt, felt good
This took a while for no good reason
4x2x368 lbs - open belt, because no way it was shutting. Power belly gains.
14x368 lbs - wanted 15 initially but 14 was un-good enough to can it. Not that numbers matter, but still one better than last fifth set with this weight

Depth is weird for me these days. I first rep is usually ok, then it goes funny. Either my quads are big enough they pump up and hit the belt, fucking with my proprioreception; my gut gets in the way; or I’m just a good-for-nothing high squatter.
First rep three second pause squats
2x4x335 lbs - first set all high, second set better
DB goblet squats
2x10x110 lbs
45 degree back raises
4x15 at bodyweight - triple checked, and it definitely didn’t say to add weight
Pull-ups
Two max rep sets: 7 wide overhand, 6 wide neutral
Done in an hour and 40 minutes, just didn’t have foot on the gas and actually was vaguely sociable. Well, I talked and put shit on an annoying person in there. Also my buddy Alex was in and we did chat a little.
My GSD is like that, and the breed used to be a flock dog. He has an impulse to not let me out of his sight, and normally waits at the door all night for me when I go back to uni after visiting at home. He’s really good about walking without a leash (private road so I can do that without putting him at risk of getting hit/bothering people) since he’ll either stay by my side or if I call him he’ll run at me full speed.
