Dude pics…

Didn’t take any. If I don’t make it myself, I generally don’t take pics. Also I was in a semi rush, didn’t want to get a call on the radio while eating.

I don’t know if this has been answered, but what do you do for a living, Mark? I have been wondering because of your shifts and sleep problems.

I just went all cyber stalker on him (after the radio post), found some professional info and still have no clue.

I have to admit the radio thing made me curious as well, haha.

@MarkKO is an assassin.

Actually, he works security, or at least that’s his cover story - I think it’s for some shady covert ops program like Blackwater.

Pretty sure he’s like an Aussie Seal team member.

I thought he was law enforcement.

I keep it vague, mostly because I like to post whatever I want on social media. That way it’s less likely I can get caught out as I don’t explicitly identify myself as employed by a particular organisation. Then there’s the safety side of it, because while I’m insignficant where I work isn’t and I have pretty substantial access, so I don’t want to publicise that. That’s more far fetched though. Mostly I just want to post inappropriate jokes on facebook without breaching any codes of conduct.

@The_Myth is kind on the money with his first bit, not the Seal part @Koestrizer. I’m not at LEO, although I’m considering going up for the AFP intake. The only issue is that the academy is six months and I’m not sure how Mrs KO and munchkin (or I, for that matter) would deal with me being away for that long except for weekends.

I did that for my first Academy. It sucked.

That’s my fear. I’m trying to figure out if it’s worth the risk/unpleasantness to complete the application, which in itself is a fairly involved process. I’ve got a couple of weeks.

I was 25 at the time and decided 6 months of sacrifice was worth a 30 year career. And then I went and switched agencies and had to do it again. Luckily the second one was way less intense and I got to come home every day.

The sad thing is that the state certifies us and I didn’t have to do it a second time; the department is just stubborn and wants everyone to do their academy.

In New York, the academies are six months but you commute, and make shit money. If you’re in NYC, then you end up making only about $42K your first year before all the overtime kicks in. In Suffolk, the average salary is $113K.

My father in law retired at 65 after thirty four years (including buy back from two tours in Viet Nam) and his pension is $178K.

No joke.

My brother in law retired at 41 years old as a Lieutenant on 3/4 disability at about $130K.

In NY you can retire at 50% of final average after 20 years.

No joke.

@MarkKO go for it. You’ll never regret

Australian Federal Police. Aussie FBI. I’ve only met a few but they were a lot more chill than most of the regular police I’ve had the pleasure of encountering.

The US is so diverse that the salaries mean nothing without knowing the comparable cost of living. We start around $40k a year but it’s cheap to live here. Our gas prices are always below the national average. My house is three stories with a full basement (unfinished) and has around 2800 finished square feet. We paid $167k. You won’t find that in Suffolk.

For another frame of reference, you can get a two or three bedroom apartment with 1000 square feet for $600-1200 here.

According to Zillow our median home listing price is $142k. I can’t find the mean.
