Meanwhile the enemy chops people’s heads off, no one says a word.

What?
When did no one say a word? What does this have to do with a soldier throwing an animal over a cliff?
You stupid?
I am saying it is unfair to demonize the entire American armed forces on the basis on one man’s actions.
On the other hand, you’ve insurgents are cutting people’s heads off and blowing up markets full of civilians and people cheer them on.
We’re in a war and people care about a stupid puppy getting thrown off a cliff. Everyone also seems to think steroids in the MLB is top priority as well…ridiculous.

Ding ding ding - we have a winner.

I’m glad you wrote that. I like dogs, but I truly don’t care about a puppy considering the thousands of human deaths that should be top priority as far as shit to be concerned about. They don’t even mention the number of soldiers dead anymore but a puppy gets news at 11?
What next, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie travel to Iraq for an episode of The Simple Life?
Hell, it would probably get top ratings.
The only reason people seem surprised by this is because of the amount of media coverage for this war. If anyone thinks less wrongful acts occurred during past wars, they are delusional.
I think it is ridiculous to on one hand expect a man to be in the frame of mind to kill…but on the other act like you are about to faint when you find that the same men trained to kill might just hold onto that mental state in and out of combat.
Vietnam Vets didn’t have large mental issues with war for no reason.
If puppy killings bother you that much, why are we at war?

So does RJ when they happen to be Palestinian “vermin”.
Does his opinion count?
I would venture to think that he’s one that got caught, but probably not the only marine that did this type of thing. War does things to people’s minds. Not condoning it, but that video is proof of the devastating effects of war has on the human mind.
That puppy was a Terrorist!
I wish that Marine was in charge of our Torture division.

He was caught digging on the side of the road.
Seemed a pretty pointless act, and hopefully the guy will be disciplined accordingly, but I enjoyed the balanced response by the animal rights brigade, calling for the man’s family home to be burnt down.
Good to see people put things in perspective.
You guys really need to understand that there are other people then adult american men who live in this country. Every Woman and child is going to be affected by this emotionally a lot harder than some of us. I personally find it disturbing and think the guy is defanitely an asshole. Maybe I would have punched him in the face a couple times myself, but thats just my reaction to it. BUT for you guys to not understand how the other 70% of your country will look at this is a little dumb. You can explain why a child gets killed in a war as collateral damage.
You can explain that to your kids, Hunny thier parents were bad people and blah blah blah, How you gonna explain this to your 10 year old daughter when she hears about it. People have been killing eachother since the beginning of time, it’s nothing new so there is little sensation to it. In fact it used to be much much worse, imagine watching a village get hacked up with swords, that would be terrible. People however aren’t accustomed to humans killing innocent baby animals for fun. It just doesn’t happen, how many hunters go around shooting baby moose or elk or deer? It makes no sense to do so, so people have a harder time making sense of it. When people can’t make sense of something, they get emotional.

The fact that some people seem to truly not give a shit blows me away. This guy is a sociopath. Killing an innocent puppy [cat, koala, aardvark] for shits and giggles is psycho. I could give a fuck that he’s a marine, he could vend ice cream for a living.
His profession is irrelevent, his mental state is not. I hope he gets dishonorably discharged, is forced to work at a pizza hut for the rest of his life, one night when he’s working the register a crew of nutty’s come through, knock the place off and cram his ass in the industrial oven. I’ll say “Who give’s a shit? He’s just some crazy.”

Who has written that they don’t give a shit? Allow me to put this into perspective for you. My dad is a Vietnam Vet. I have heard countless stories about rape and even more graphic shit involving wearing the ears of the combatants you’ve killed. We didn’t get any of that on youtube while it was happening. No one’s camera phone captured any babies getting stepped on or children used as bomb carriers.
War is graphic, painful, destructive and uncompromising. It is ridiculous to train people to kill, drop them in a war torn country and then act surprised when some of them keep those instincts in and out of battle.
If it is found out, fine, let the military deal with it. If some women and children are this oblivious to the realities of war, maybe this will be a wake up call for them. Maybe then people wouldn’t be so quick to rush into war in the first place.
Let these men do their jobs without constant criticism from armchair quarterbacks back home who haven’t even been in a fist fight in their lives.
Is killing animals bad? Yes. Isn’t putting men who are too young to legally drink alcohol in a situation to kill others at least half as dark? I guess that depends on who you vote for, huh?

Prof, I am missing something here, you are against us sending our young men over there to war, yet you are telling us to not be outraged by this one persons act? Our outrage is exactly what is needed to force change so that we don’t put our young men and women in these situations in the future.
If you want to start a thread about other outragous acts that you find more worthy to get upset over, by all means please do, I’m sure i’ll join you in your outrage. But please don’t excuse away this act, it is terrible and if the root cause is our young people being asked to do too much, then lets talk about that aspect of it.
And calling children oblivious is just plain ignorant. Of course they are clueless, us adults are supposed to educate them about the workings of the world. And throwing puppies off a cliff, no matter how you spin it, is going to blow thier minds. There are no similarities they can associate with it. The women, well hell they are women, you know better than that. Most women are very emotional.
How many guys have you seen get all sappy around a cute puppy and then compare that to the number of women who do. I think the point is made.

Stop right there. Quote what I have written and debate that directly. Nowhere did I write that I was against sending men to war. I just got out of the damn military. how could I be against it?
I didn’t even read the rest. Come back when you are ready to NOT make up my argument for me.
This debate reminded me of a professor at Princeton and his stance on animal rights. He has a endowed chair (not sure if he’s still there)in the Human Values center. He was in favor of protecting the right of bestiality. He stated something to the affect that it would be better that a hen be used for sex rather than sent to the slaughter house.
OK…back to the regularly scheduled debate…
