Looking for opinions from my fellow lifters!

My home gym resurrection is getting closer and closer and I am looking at purchasing a new toy.

Which piece of equipment would you recommend?

  1. Reverse Hyper - Back health/strength ($400USD - Titan)
  2. DL bar - More specificity for deadlifting (I currently own a stiff bar) ($390CAD - Strongarm)
  3. Yukon Bar (Titan) - This would be nice to use for squats to save my shoulders, but I also have a SSB which could be used for this purpose as well ($210 - Titan)
  4. Strongman Log - I think I’ve talked myself out of this one, but I still haven’t removed it from my wish list… ($230 - Titan)
  5. Leg Press - I seem to still find myself searching used ads for a leg press. ($600 - Used)

Goals have become a little more far-sighted than previous years. More looking at the long game and just building my powerlifting total over the next handful of years.

Currently, the reverse hyper is winning the race for me, but interested to hear thoughts/suggestions from my fellow lifters!

I know some people have been saying that the reverse hyper screwed with their backs, but for some it works like a charm… points against it if you haven’t tried it out yet.

Good point, I had read that as well.

I was able to use one fairly consistently last summer when I was training at my coach’s gym (pre foot breaking and pre having a child). While I can’t say for certain that it helped me, I can reasonably assume that it wasn’t harmful to my back as I did go through that entire training block with him without back issues. That was also while training with a lot higher intensity than typically (Conjugate Method 2x/week ME work).

Edit: I’m currently typing this with a tweaked back from shoveling clear stone all weekend, massage is lined up for after work this evening. I did some light foam rolling this morning and oh boy are my hips tight. Need to get better with my mobility work as well…

Have you got a GHR in your current garage gym? If not that’d be on my list.

Any argument for GHR/GHD vs Reverse Hyper?

I won’t be forking out the coin for both of these, nor would I have the space, but I had put the reverse hyper higher on the want list than the GHD for powerlifting purposes.

If you get a GHR you can get creative and use it for rows and if you have bands you can make a banded reverse hyper. Win win

In an ideal world both but ghd is what I chose, mainly as in the UK - cheaper, easier to find and less space not sure how that translates to Canadia - I also went for a floor one which can be stored upright for extra space saving (I’ve got limited space!).

Other than those reasons if you’re always hitting heavy weighted movements something that can be challenging and BW might give you a different stimulus and not take as much out of you.

But that just thoughts, you’re stronger/more experienced so if you’re gut say reverse hyper then you’re probably right!

@simo74 - Yeah, there may be a few other movements one try and mimic on a GHD, I just don’t seem to see them pop up as much in powerlifting programs as the reverse hyper does which is why I had swayed in that direction.

@alex_uk - They are very similar in price, and very similar floor footprint here (although yours that stores upright would likely take up much less room). I appreciate you weighing in! I am looking for opinions to make sure I’m looking at the whole picture before making this big investment in my workout space.

@ChickenLittle - You know I’m a tight ass, so anything with the name Rogue on it is pretty much a no-go! I did look at this one, which is half the price of Rogue’s and it is still out of my budget.

I did, however, just pick up a pair of 140lb pro-style dumbbells today for $100 to add to the collection. A goal for benching and a nice jump for some heavy DB rows!

Weighed in at 218.6lbs today… 218 is being stubborn. Easy to get here, a little tougher to keep it moving (no cardio added to date).

I went for a 30min massage after work today. Back is still bugging me from all that shoveling of clear stone this past weekend and on my hands and knees so much. She found a bunch of tender spots that she worked on. Followed this immediately with the deadlifts, they felt fine, but starting to stiffen up again now.

I don’t seem to fit in a reverse hyper. I like the GHR because you can use it for a Nordic ham curl type movement.

Bear meat surely gives the greatest gains.

Reverse hyper or a GHR. I’d go reverse hyper, nothing can fix or maintain back health quite as well.

Natty cheat codes; almost as good as Poo Tarts.

I’m just a little guy, so I don’t have that problem lol The GHD is definitely a strong hamstring builder, which I can always use more work on.

You are what you eat! :+1:

This is a big seller for me. My back has been a troubled area over the years, and I expect it to be the reason I eventually am forced into retirement from lifting heavy things. If the reverse hyper adds more longevity to my lifting career I think that outweighs nearly every other factor I could think of.

Woke at 219.0lbs this morning, calories were heavily loaded at the end of the day (nearly 1500cals around 8pm), so this isn’t a surprise.

Heading out of town to a friend’s wedding tonight. I’ll have to feel it out, but I have a feeling drinks will flow and my dancing shoes will get a workout.

Have a great weekend everyone! Might be able to squeeze in a fluff workout while I’m out of town, won’t be back until Sunday evening just in time for the Superbowl!

Those photos of your home construction give me the sweats haha. My GF and I are between buying and building a house ourselves right now, and leaning towards building. I hate paperwork so it just seems like a nightmare.

Keep that fetish stuff to yourself man.
