Here’s a bad outcome. I have no words to describe the officers except that they are shockingly inept in a two-on-one struggle.
That was unbelievably painful to watch.
I hate to say woman, but there l said it.
99.9% are not suitable for altercations…
The man was totally at the mercy of bad guy.
I’ll disagree on that, at least altercations on this scale.
I know a number of normal-sized gals who could have rag-dolled that chump in their sleep. Even if they didn’t, this guy isn’t holding them down. Both of these cops seemed to forget they have hips and legs that can be used to move on the ground… This was not some terror of a wrestler. It was an untrained man with more will to fight than two cops combined, which didn’t seem like much.
There looked like a taser was in play as well, but it was hard to see how it was or wasn’t deployed.
If there’s ever a video that makes the case for better LEO grappling training, this is it.
It’s Friday afternoon so why not post another good outcome?
There’s a lot I like about this cop. This is very representative of what it is like to be a solo bouncer when things get chippy around a bunch of people drinking. You will get swarmed, filmed and possibly fucked with. You don’t always know if the guy you’re tangling with has boys in the crowd who are just as dumb as he is.
Weapons never came out. The cop never fully committed to the ground either, opting for knee-on-belly. This is highly illustrative of the value of knee-on-belly. He’s able to pin the first drunk while still posturing up to face and deal with other threats, which he did with very measured force. You lose that ability if you go chest-to chest in side control or even go to mount. Neither have that mobility of the floating pin that is knee-on-belly.
Outstanding use of size, pressure, calm demeanor and measured force. 10/10 I’d work a shift with this guy any day.
Beautiful.
This is the kinda stuff I try to drill into my less experienced security colleagues. “Shove n’ shout”, show that you’re in control withOUT going 100% aggro. Very fine line that lots don’t know how to manage.
It says Judo Cop. Is that just something the person who posted the video came up with or is he a judoka?
Also, wtf? Is that what young American males look like these days? They need to go eat some cheeseburgers.
Your guess is as good as mine. There wasn’t any high-level judo in that video, but there didn’t need to be.
My instructor said it well. Try the front door first. It’s open more than you think.
Let’s talk about the merits of goon tactics that aren’t necessarily part of sport Judo. In other words, knocking on the front door first.
Grabbing a shirtless guy by the neck and just rag-dolling him to the ground is a move you won’t see in the Olympics, but it is super-legit in the right circumstances.
I can’t speak to LEO department policies when it comes to this, btw. Maybe this gets a cop in certain jurisdictions fired, I have no idea. I see it as very reasonable force.
This cop had a big height, size, strength and presumably reach advantage on the other guy. A situation I’ve been in before. The neck is probably the best thing he could have grabbed because he got a controlling grip without getting into a danger zone. Chances are the guy didn’t have the reach to do any real damage and you’ve basically got total control over someone that much smaller than you when you have them by the neck.
Here’s an effective and surprising goon move you can practice on your wife, girlfriend or grown children* that you won’t learn in a De la Riva guard masterclass. Grab their neck with a full-force one-handed murder choke and monkey-paw the back of their head with your other hand. Pull the head towards you hard while squeezing and pushing hard on the neck away from you, going for the carotids with your fingers if you can. While you’re doing this start to charge them forward into a wall or something that they might trip over. It works great if you’re bigger, taller, stronger, sober-er with a much longer reach. It can even work great if you’re not.
What I really liked about this was a big, strong cop using his size, strength and experience to manage a situation well without hurting anyone. Murder chokes and smothers are excellent tools that don’t necessarily look very good on film to an untrained eye, but it is part of the curriculum I study.
*that was a half joke, lest anyone think I’m advocating domestic violence. Training must always be consensual.
This Minneapolis cop has been all over my social media this morning. I never chime in or jump to a conclusion until I’ve seen enough to draw such a conclusion.
This appears to be a homicide via blood choke or a case where this guy just happened to perish from other causes while the officer’s knee was on his neck. The man appeared to be handcuffed the entire time.
I’ve gone out from a blood choke before. I’ve seen people go out. I’ve gone to the edge of putting someone out. This looks like a blood choke to me.
I can’t fathom why he kept his knee on a limp body like that. Was he trying to make a point? Did he not understand what a limp body means? Was he unaware of how blood chokes work, even one-sided blood chokes?
Here is the full video, absent any news commentary, etc.
I saw this video this morning. Very sad incident.
We can only guess what’s going on in someone’s head at a time like that, but my suspicion is yes, he was trying to make a point. When you’ve got a bunch of bystanders yelling at you, I imagine some people don’t want to appear “weak” by following the advice of those not directly involved in the incident.
Because he was probably told that if a person can talk, they can breathe which, even if true, would only be true if we weren’t talking about a blood choke. He has no training in how to restrain, control or immobilize someone or, chose to ignore that training in order to be a dick. I don’t think he intended to murder the guy so he probably was unaware of how blood chokes work and doesn’t have any experience in Judo or BJJ where you can develop the awareness for when someone is out.
While on the subject of being a dick, that cop is a real piece of garbage. I would like to say he was a good cop and person who made a mistake but he should go to jail. Maybe not for murder but for something. Telling a guy to get in the car while he pinned him is being an asshole. It looked like he was having fun doing it too. I really hate it when cops will tell someone to relax without understanding that in some positions you can’t relax. Those of us who train know how to relax with another person’s weight on us but most people will panic and struggle.
This gets to one reason why cops need to train in how to immobilize someone. The way most do it, they think they need to completely stop any ability of the suspect to move. This is how people die as they just get smothered and crushed. If the person can struggle a bit you can let them wear themselves out while maintaining a dominant position.
But that cop needs to go to jail.
We can only guess. He looked scared to me. I’ve been filmed during violent moments too. It is unsettling, but I’ve never felt confused or unsure of when it is time to turn off the violence. It isn’t always clear when a threat has ended, but a guy face-down in handcuffs isn’t a person I’d be particularly concerned with.
This seems like something basic training and/or police procedures might address, but I don’t know what those are like in Minneapolis.
I thought it was the cop telling him to get in the car but it was a bystander.
I don’t think he was scared, maybe he was, but his partner seemed calm enough to stand there with his hands in his pockets.
That doesn’t exude calm to me. Hands in the pockets exudes fear and insecurity in tense moments.
That’s possible. But I don’t think it’s a reasonable excuse for what he did. And when the EMTs came they didn’t help themselves any by dragging the guy like a sack of garbage onto the stretcher. I could be wrong but shouldn’t they have checked the guy’s vitals before doing anything? I wonder at what point did they actually begin life saving actions. It’s just not a good look. At some point you have to at least appear to have a sense of humanity.
I’m not defending any of it. I’m just saying he looked scared. They both did. I’m sure some shit was running through both of their heads as they were being filmed and challenged.
Contrast the body language you see with both of those cops (both had hands in pockets, btw) with the solo boss on the beach. Contrast the use of force as well. Beach Boss knew exactly what he was doing the entire time and nobody got hurt.
I’m no cop or martial arts expert, but I don’t need to be one in order to know that putting your knee on someone’s neck stands a good chance of killing him. This cop was either malicious or profoundly incompetent. I am inclined to give cops the benefit of the doubt in dicey situations, but this turned my stomach.
Yeah, that’s homicide. It’s quite incredible that they’re just fired and not charged with murder at this point. It’s also amazing to me that the paramedics involved aren’t charged with criminal negligence either. Possible broken neck? Moving the victim around? I mean seriously - he was likely dead already by that point.
There were two other cops there, so a total of four, which makes we wonder why he would be scared.
All four have been fired.
