Making Weight for a Competition

So I read this article on making weight: http://www.elitefts.com/documents/making_weight.htm

I’ve also been asking around with people I know on how to make weight and the consensus is pretty much drink about 2 gallons of water the week leading up to the meet, cut it off the night before weigh in, and in the morning you should be fine.

Also the article says eat super clean the week of the meet, drink green tea, eat a lemon after cutting off water, etc.

My meet is the 27th. I am hovering at about 200lbs give or take half a lb (morning post dump) and I want to be 198. The trouble that I noticed was that my normal water intake is actually pretty close to 2 gallons already, if not more. Should I go for 3-4 gallons or is there a point of diminishing returns?

As far as methods go, I’m thinking I might get a gallon jug for the day and carry it around with me for class, and then have a gallon at home in my fridge. Thoughts?

Also, if it helps, I’ve been on a 40pro/30fat/30carb split for the past 6 weeks, with about 2900 total calories, and I’ve gone from 208 to where I am now. I fucked up a little this week because I was travelling around, but next week I’ll be on point.

2 pounds shouldn’t be a big deal assuming your scale is accurate. I’m also assuming this is a 2 hour weigh-in?

you may want to bump your water intake up to 3 gallons. I wouldn’t go with 4 unless you are sweating profusely. If this is your first meet don’t be too focused on making weight. Start spitting on your way to the meet and be prepared to rehydrate and eat ASAP. Don’t worry too much about making weight if it’s your first meet, but trying to lose 2 pounds could be good experience to see how your body reacts to the weight cutting process.

Thanks for the advice pvossen,
I actually weighed in this morning at 198, so I’m feeling pretty good about things. I will probably continue with my water intake in the 2-3 gallon range and watch carbs this week. Hopefully I can make it 1-2 lbs under so I can have some room for error. I agree with you about seeing how my body reacts, since I’ve never cut weight before.

I’ll make sure to have food on hand. That spitting idea is a neat trick also.

You will worry any excess weight off, so don’t freak out.

I can lose 4 lbs within 24hrs just because the meet is the next day, and I have been at it for over 8 years.

Have fun and enjoy the ride.

2 lbs is nothing. Stop water 12 hours before the weigh in and you’ll make it. I lose around 4lbs in 12 hours without water.

Haha, you’ll be fine with 2 lbs. I plan on cutting around 20 for a strongman comp where the weigh in will be the night before, you can get 2.

pshh, 2 pounds. Ill buy you a can of dip, you can spit out 2 pounds on the ride to the meet, I actually did that last meet lol

I would love to see someone fill up a 32 oz bottle with spit. lol

Did this 2 years ago during a cram study session for exams. went through 3 (canadian) rolls in 2 days

If you want to spit to lose weight, use Lemon Heads candy, just make sure to rinse your mouth out regularly to save your teeth. Do NOT use Sweet Tarts. I did this once and the acid from the candy burned all of the skin on the inside of my mouth. I couldn’t eat anything substantial for 2 days, after the dead skin had peeled off of my cheeks and tongue. It was fucked up.

Thanks for the tip…and warning.

Last meet I dropped 7-8lbs the night before through the water intake/cut-off method (I used 16 hours) and a hot bath sweating the night prior. Went to bed confident I was at weight, got to the meet and 15 minutes prior to the 2 hour weigh-in, I was 0.2kgs over (~1/2 lbs). I used gum to spit and sat on a toilet as I squeezed out dribbles and mini nuggets. Weighed in 45 minutes later at exactly 75.0kgs.

After doing a similar method three times, 6lbs was a cake walk, 8 was rough, but I was also just recovering form a flu so my body weight was really fluctuating and not acting normally.

I think you’re going to be just fine. 2 lbs is probably what you sweat off in your sleep. another lb for your morning piss.

First off, I feel threads about weight cutting should not be allowed on here. Secondly, how many meets have you done? If you have only done a few, there is no reason to cut any weight. Unless you are trying to drop to break some state or national record, be as big and strong as possible.

“The first 3 letters in diet spell die. You don’t want to die, do you?” - Richard Simmons is a fucking genius.
