Making a Homemade Protein Bar

I have whey protein powder and would basically like to make it into a solid form that I can easily take to school with me and add to my lunch, because I can get plenty of carbs or fats but not much protein in my school lunch. I would prefer to not bring an extra water bottle or anything and mix it into a shake, so making a protein bar from the powder seems like the next best option.

Can anyoen provide a recipe for making protein bars with low fat and carb? The recipes I found on this site so far have had a lot of carbs or fats in them. It would be a lot cheaper for me if I made my own over buying them pre-made.

Kind of difficult to do without something like pb to get the protein to stick together.

It will be hard to find a homeade bar that is low in carbs because you need some kind of oat to soldify the mix. My favorite is oatmeal, whey, peanut butter, and egg but obviously that has a good amount of carbs. Why dont you just make a bar that has carbs and not eat the school carbs?

I don’t know just how low carb you want 'em, but these “brownies” are easy and work well for me.

1 banana, mashed
1-2 scoops protein
Enough water to make a brownie batter consistency

Optional additions:
1-2 tbs unsweetened cocoa
Vanilla extract
Stevia/splenda/etc

Microwave for 20 seconds and let it sit. After a minute or two, if it’s not a solid brownie, nuke it a little more. Don’t overcook or it’ll turn out like a protein loofah.

For an espresso brownie, add a packet of Starbucks Via.

This wont answer your question at all, but will give you another idea as far as convenience is concerned.

Put your protein powder required in a ziploc bag, or a tupperware (unmixed, just the powder)

At the school, take a free cofee cup… put water in it…Use a free plastic fork… Stir

Win.

Alton Brown did a great show on this on Good Eats.

Youtube it if you’re interested.

thanks for the replies guys. I’ll keep looking around for recipes that have lower carb/fat amounts.

GET OUT OF MY MIND. No seriously, that’s exactly what i was thinking. I even looked it up.

So use something else. He wasn’t marketing them towards bodybuilders. In fact, I would guess the demographic that watches Good Eats is mostly women.

I made some out of sugar free pudding. It wasn’t thick enough to bring around with me though. I also got the Hershey squirts at one point because I left it in my fridge for over a week. It tasted funny, then I realize it was made with milk. Which probably went rancid.

There are some things we do not need to know – especially before dinner!

I recently discovered that creme de menthe and mint-chocolate Optimum Nutrition make for a killer dessert… Not exactly solid, but if you’re taking a brown-sac, there’s space for some Tupperware.

I hear you on this. I’m always looking for something to get my protein up with very few calories and the only way I’ve really found to do it is as a previous poster said: some Metabolic Drive protein powder in a zip loc bag with a little bit of water in it to create a pudding. Make sure you bring a spoon or you’ll have to rip a hole in the corner and squeeze it out like an astronaut.

I do it in a pinch but it’s kind of a pain in the neck.

Bars are super convenient but they are all high in carbs and crap.

Sometimes I don’t have the time or the inclination to make my “protein slop” so I use a protein bar.

My favorite bars are Quest protein bars. They are the only ones I’ve ever seen that only have 4g of carbs in them. They taste really, really good.

They’re only sold online but you can buy a single bar just to try it if you want.
