Are you still planning on competing again tomorrow? If so, good luck mate. Hope you follow up the good work from last time out with some new PRs and a 600lb deadlift!
By the way, you’re going to have to change the title of your log now ![]()

Yeah son! Traveling down today, 7 hour drive, yeesh. Not sure if I’ll make the weigh in tonight, but there’s another at 6:30 in the morning. Event starts tomorrow at 2pm. No weight to cut. Coach says he’s going to start my openers around the same as last meet, and see how I do.
600 pull!
Also, how do you change the name of your log? I have no idea.
Man you better crush 600
By now, you had better have crushed the entire meet. We are talking absolute destruction.
Do it my man.
Waiting for results…
I don’t know how to embed the .jpeg… Internetz fail. Probably a double fail, since I stole the picture from one that novaeer posted in my log. Still, I am waiting patiently to read of meet-crushing.

Y’all have been beary patient.
Was going to update yesterday but posting was down.
Meet recap
USPA Multiply 7/2/11
275lb class
Cliffs Notes: 1679 total. 644 squat, 439 bench, 600 deadlift. PR in bench, deadlift and total. Enjoyed it, but may postpone competing for the near future in order to drop some body weight and heal myself.
Drove around 7 hours down to the Costa Mesa Hilton on Friday. Got there around 8pm, just missing the weigh in for that night. Unpacked at the room and went to go get some pizza before our team was supposed to have a meeting. The lobby restaurant took forever and I missed the meeting waiting on food. Oh well, not a big deal.
Woke up early and went to weigh in at 6:30am, 265lbs. Weight down a little but I did just wake up. Picked my openers based on what I opened at for last meet. I didn’t remember exactly so I just picked numbers that seemed the same. No doubt I could do them. Went back upstairs and slept in until 11 or so. Our flight was supposed to start at 2pm, but didn’t get rolling until 4pm. This was a National meet with military, raw, single ply and multi ply divisions, so there was a lot going on. It was run very well. They had two flights going when we started, the single ply lifters in the heavier weight classes and the multiply division. I had drank lots of coffee and was making sure that I was hydrated, so the whole time while we were waiting to start warming up I swear I peed like 10 times in 2 hours. It was crazy. They had two monolifts total, and had to drag one of them out onto the platform, so we had plenty of time to warmup for squats. I did the bar, one plate, and two plates raw. The I moved up to three plates with suit bottoms, then four, five and five and a half plates with straps up.
First squat
644lbs and change (I think)
Redlighted for depth. The big ass and thighs played against me here. I thought I hit depth, but think it was just too damn slow. Spent too much time in the hole and let the judges think about it.
Second squat
644lbs, same weight, smoked it. Much faster.
Third squat
671lbs, no lift. Felt rushed into this squat. Coach rushed wrapping my knees, I felt like I had more time to spare. Then I also rushed the setup & unrack. I had to take two breaths. Usually I take one big breath, unrack and go. This time I took a breath, unracked, then breathed again. It felt close to going up. I struggled against it, but then I heard a spotter whisper, “c’mon man” and I knew I was done. So no PR for squat.
Warmup for bench took a little longer, going through all of our guys to get ready, then they spring the start on us before we’re even notified, so we all rush out to the platform to be stopped in our tracks because the spotters and loaders didn’t have the rack heights for everyone. So they make the scorer’s table go through everyone and get their rack height.
First bench
404lbs (I think)
Redlighted because there was a dip in the bar path, not a fluid motion up so no good. I think this is because I lost tightness in the leg drive halfway up.
Second bench
404lbs, same weight. Easy does it, made sure to be tight on my heels.
Third bench
439. Good lift. Bench PR. Was a bit concerned because I felt my ass come up off the bench but the judges passed it, all whites. Benefit of having a big ass!
By this time my body is feeling pretty worn out. I’m drinking Gatorade and eating protein bars and other snacks, but I’m feeling worn down. I only take three warmups for deads. Two plates raw, three and four plates with the suit. As I’m getting up to the platform I feel a sharp pain in my R hamstring and have my girlfriend put some biofreeze on it. She hits a spot and my leg jumps from the pain. She, being a chiro, tells me its probably torn. Awesome.
First dead
540. Easy.
Then coach asks me if I want to go for something inbetween 540 and 600 for my total. I tell him no, lets go for it.
Second dead
600 and change. Huffed some Nose Tork. Nailed it, PR! Had issues with locking out the hips in the past, so I locked it and looked straight at the head judge. He called me down, white lights, rebel yell! A few present said that my big ass helped me here too cuz I didn’t lock out all the way, but the judges passed so sod off, it counts!
Third dead
611. Dropped it halfway. At this point I was satisfied with my last pull, so I didn’t feel like I needed this one. I got about halfway up and felt my hands ripping and knew that it would be a mother to lock it out, so I gave it up.
1679 total. 4lbs up from my last meet, which was almost exactly one month before this one. I wouldn’t recommend doing two meets in one month to anyone, it took its toll on my body. My hamstring felt torn all night long, then felt better the next day, but then my shoulder felt torn, and I caught a little stomach bug too. I’m relishing the deload. I may even deload for two weeks before I get back into training. I’ll do some light cardio inbetween but no heavy stuff. My body needs to repair.
With two meets under my belt, and huge improvements in my numbers from when I started, I’m satisfied for the time being. In less than a year I gained about 60 pounds of body weight, 150lbs on my deadlift, at least 200lbs on my squat, and 100+ on my bench. I’m probably not going to compete again any time soon. I want to get more cardio into my training, and maybe do some cross-training in other sports and activities. I love being active, and while I respect competitive powerlifting, I don’t want to commit to doing it ONLY at the exclusion of any other activities that I enjoy. Also I’m concerned about my health a bit. With my new bulk I’ve developed a case of sleep apnea, and my blood pressure is high. So I want to get a handle on those issues, diet down a bit, do some surfing this summer, and see where I want to be. I’m kinda dreading talking to my coach about this, because I’m pretty sure that he’ll want me to continue. Oh well, I’ll update when I have that conversation I guess.
In other news, I got to see a 55 and a 65 year old man compete and squat pretty big numbers, plus I got to see Scott Cartwright walk out and squat 1008 in a single ply suit. Pretty BA.
Well done my friend, thats awesome.
Take some time to get that health back in line (I will doing the same thing soon), and then move on to greater things in the iron game.
By the way, a “rebel yell” huh? Where might you be from?

Thanks, bud. My family hails from Dixie, but I was born in Cali.
Good work major. Any recommendations for meet nutrition?
Damn fine work, man. Damn fine. Congrats on the PRs, on the 600 dead, and on kicking ass.
Rest up, recover to the point where you’re satisfied, and return to domination.

Thanks.
As long as you can hold food down, eat whatever you can. You need the energy. If you have trouble with nasuea, make it stuff that’s easy to digest, like Gatorade, protein bars and protein shakes. I had no problems with my stomach so I was eating sandwiches, eggs, almonds, protein bars & shakes, and drinking Gatorade the whole time
