I have a surplus of Magnesium Carbonate Powder. It causes diarhea. Could I mix it with vinegar to yield Magnesium acetate salt in water. If so would this be a viable magnesium supp?
vinegar is only 5% acetic acid at best. although the reaction would yield mostly magnesium acetate, it’s a relatively weak acid(still strong enough to fuck with you if we used higher than 5% in vinegar though), but some magnesium bicarbonate would still remain.
if magnesium bicarb is safe to consume then go for it.

Absorbability, benefits of acetate on glucose tolerance.
Chuck it in the bin and buy some real supplements

Or just buy some cheap syringes and inject it into your butt. Duh.
Only half kidding.
On Ray Peat forum, read a post from a biochemist who added 100 mg of pregenenolone to his nightly high dose magnesium and no more loose stools. As I remember, preg, converting to progesterone, facilitates getting magnesium into the cells instead of acting like a laxative. I tried it with 2 gm of mag carbonate. Just a little loose stool. Next night upped the preg to 200 mg. No stomach problems. My sleep is improving. Deeper, rather than longer. Six hours a night, but feeling more rested, with a more balanced mood. ( I have untreatable bipolar illness.) Even nocturnal and morning wood are a bit more frequent, but I believe more time is needed. I am on t shots; 50 mg, IM 2Xweek, going into year 2.
NOW, over the past two weeks, magnesium has gradually reduced my carb/sugar cravings. I have metabolic syndrome and overweight. Magnesium, for me, seems to be the missing piece.(cautiously hopeful) Based on my reduced appetite and satiety, I seem to be recovering my leptin sensitivity. So far, lost 7 pounds.(165 to 158) I’ve been using supplements for decades(69 y.o.) and have been disappointed more than I’ve been surprised. I’ve begun adding a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to my mag carbonate, letting it react and fizz, because I read that it makes magnesium more bioavailable.
I know I’ve got to reverse the MetS. It’s priority one. Tried Metformin and it quickly gave me diarrhea. My primary and urologist, both progressive and ahead of the curve, encourage me to experiment, since, I’m a biochemical/physiologic outlier. I’m up for the challenge.
