Mac Versus PC

Yeah, I love how they ripped Android notifications. I mean, I wouldn’t expect a serious breakthrough in how that stuff is handled–KISS, right?–but watch people think this was Apple’s creation.

I bet Apple will sue Google at some point in the future for “copying” iOS notifications.
Indeed, Apple is good at that. Stealing a design and then claiming ownership. Even Jobs admitted to that a while ago - something to the effect of “Good artists copy… Great artists steal”.

And the comparison to XBL was retarded. “Only” 30 million subscribers? You’re comparing a niche market–console gaming–to the smartphone market, something which is almost ubiquitous by comparison to consoles?
Absolutely - it’s clever though.

The fact that Apple won’t allow 3rd party SSDs to be installed in their laptops is ridiculous. I need to throw in an Intel 320 SSD (300 GB) and I shouldn’t have to use the kext hack to get the OS to recognize the TRIM command on a non-Apple SSD.
That’s interesting. The whole control they have over their devices is unsettling. I guess you have to make some sacrifices.

Oh yeah, and I apparently type so goddamn fast on a Mac that the characters don’t all show up, as if only 90% of them register sometimes. The cursor and refresh rate on a PC is much, much faster. I think I read that this is due to Apple’s use of Quartz rendering.
You lost me - if the refresh rate is faster, should it be better at detecting input?
Re: Mem management…2 GB on a Mac is like 4 GB on a PC for me. I know that’s way oversimplifying it, but I mean Macs make much better use of memory. Yes, Macs DO crash, just as CHROME crashes (some fool in class was trying to tell me that Chrome “won’t crash, dude, was designed like that!”…yeah, you just don’t have 30 tabs open per each of your 4 windows spread across two workspaces. Fucking laymen.

Basically, I prefer inputs (mouse, keyboard) on a PC, but mem management on a Mac.
Lion looks interesting. I expected more to be honest, but it’s definitely a good update. Have you seen the previews of Win8? It’s looking very compelling so far.

Re: refresh rate…that’s my point. It’s faster on a PC, and it seems to be better at detecting/registering input. It slows down on a Mac because, from what I’ve read, Apple’s Quartz rendering is doing the anti-aliasing, and that adds some “lag.” Mind you, not lag that the average consumer will ever notice. I notice it for sure, though.

Win8 looks great and I think is proof of the imminent convergence of the mobile UX and desktop UX, I mean, if we’re going to have seamless “handoffs” between working on a mobile device and switching to a desktop, we need to find a lowest common denominator, and I think the discrepancy in UI/UX between a mobile and desktop platform is what has kept the two platforms too distinct for their own good.

I mean, look at web apps vs. mobile apps. There was a good article about mobile apps dying off and web apps taking over and what web technologies are primed to lay this foundation for designers and devs. And with the whole circle jerk over all things cloud (and subsequent investment in cloud infrastructure, so IaaS, PaaS), I have no doubt that we’ll see more web apps in place of mobile apps; the web apps being stored “in the cloud” and thus require less processing power from the end user’s device.

Re: XBL comparison…

That’s like something I read about texting while driving, that there are more accidents from people texting while driving than any other cause of accidents. I didn’t look into it, but my initial reaction was that they might be counting fender benders and minor, minor “accidents,” and that the fatality of the accident isn’t a part of that sensationalist statement.

Bunch of spin doctors…

I read a stat that said texting is now the #1 killer on the road for teens.

inb4 how many games do you play on your mac?

Kerley, what is going on in your avatar? Cracks me up every time I see it. It’s like Spiderman is having a bitch-slap fest with that dude.

I can believe it, seems like every time I encounter someone being idiotic on the road there is a cellphone involved.

Oh, and I am a PC guy. I do mechanical design for a test lab and most engineering software is geared towards PC’s. Also, we have a lot of old test equipment, with some still using Win98.

I do think PC’s are more for the tinkerer though, if you are hands off a Mac is probably the way to go.

Windows 7 > Any mac os

People that claim they don’t get viruses on mac when they used to get them all the time on pc are not correctly identifying the problem. The problem isn’t the platform, its the user. I haven’t had a virus on my PC since i was in high school (im 25 now). But that’s because I don’t just blindly use my computer like chimpanzee.

Windows is more customizable, has better options for the budget conscious, and really allows you to get into the nitty gritty of your machine and make it exactly the way you want it. Macs dont. The fact is that every time i use a mac i throw up in my mouth a little bit. I agree with Testy1 though, if all you are using a computer for is watching youtube and checking your email and not tinkering, then a mac is probably fine.

Then again, if thats all you are using a computer for there is absolutely no reason you need to shell out the exorbitant amount of money for a mac just to get something that’s more chic.

I’m of the same opinion, as previous stated.

This is exactly why the iPhone has done so well - they simplify the user experience and dumb it down so even a toddler can use it.

If Apple came out with a cheap computer (Mac Mini perhaps?) they would do a lot better in the desktop market.

Saying that, Windows has come a long way and viruses are due to the users not knowing what they are doing. Mac’s will start getting viruses too, the recent malware issue is proof of that.

I consider Macs Computers for Dummies

You “tinkerers” (I was one long ago, don’t have the money or patience now) should try putting together a dual boot OSX86 system

Or triple boot with the latest Ubuntu.

Again, for ME, it’s about mem management: I can have way more shit open while using my Mac and not experience slowdown, and I feel crashes are better isolated, as in, the whole system won’t go down if a program crashes.

I consider PC computers for non-creative soulless gamers.

How would you rate 7’s stability?

I’d say 7’s stability is the best I’ve used. I can be running a ridiculous amount of database and distribution software and a maxed out chrome or firefox browser while listening to music and being connected to 2-3 remote desktops without it giving me any issue. My personal computer is a mac and while I enjoy it I honestly would choose my work computer and windows7 over OSX and a mac.
