Mac Versus PC

MBP’s were about the best laptops hardware wise, but you can find better now. We picked up a couple mid-range 2010 MBP’s at work and I was hugely disappointed at how they performed for the money.
Hugely disappointed? For what reason? Because you couldn’t overclock the CPU?

I think you’re the only person I’ve ever heard of who was disappointed with a macbook pro.
LMFAO!

Seriously, you think everyone who uses a Mac like OSX? It is the most illogical OS I have ever used. Nothing reads left to right, you can’t cut and paste files, etc… it just doesn’t logically make sense.

I’ll admit that I tried the platform not planning to like it, but I’ve had it freeze on me 3 times in 3 months doing nothing other than Keynote. And it is slow as hell doing Photoshop work using 400mb+ files - that is NOT what I expect from a Ã??Ã?£1500 computer. I have a 13" Samsung that performs better.
When it comes to average users I would say 90%+ people would prefer Mac over PC if they gave it an honest shot.

In an earlier thread you showed how green you are when it comes to the Mac OS. If you knew how to use it better and didn’t go in with preconceived notions you would like it a lot more

Not sure what you mean by “nothing reads left to right” and I’m trying to figure out why you so badly are in love with cutting and pasting files when it’s largely unnecessary with what is available.

Not in the least. I make a very comfy living sitting in front of my Mac at home drawing silly pictures for magazines and books. Until recently had used the same Mac for 11 years without a virus or problem. Unlike my friend who has replaced his PC twice in the same period with a myriad of problems and viruses.

Yep! AppleFag… that’s me! Proud of it.

For me, a Mac would be a waste of money. For most of the people I know, a Mac would be a waste of money.

I’ve worked in IT for over a decade and have had plenty of exposure to both OS’s, Linux, and whole bunch of other operating systems most people haven’t heard of.

Vista sucks, 7 is good. I’d rather fix my own PC if necessary than bring it to some “genius” and get ripped off.

You can get software related programs fixed for free if you take it to an Apple Store genius bar.

It’s not difficult to replace the Hard drive, RAM, or Optical drive in a Mac. What are you concerned you can’t do yourself?

The only ridiculously expensive aspect of getting a mac fixed is if you need replacement parts for a Macbook Pro (Chassis, screen etc).

But I would guess most high end sleek laptops are expensive to fix.

Faulty NIC or wireless card. I’ve seen quite a few of them at my job.

Vista is actually ok with the service packs. But, I would never go back to it.

For most people, Macs are definitely a waste of money. And this is why the tablet market is exploding the way it is.

Apple makes good computers, no doubt about that. Some are actually reasonably priced too, for what you get.

The point is that OSX isn’t that good, and Windows isn’t that bad. Both are over-hyped to be much better or worse than the other, and I think that fact that Windows still continues to do so well is because it’s NOT that bad.

I sometimes do illustration work for Redmond Magazine (a mag for PC users). But I work on a Mac, and the publisher knows it!

Their biggest selling issue was one where I did the cover art showing a dude’s disappointment with Vista.

lol

I read and heard on the radio about the “mac defender” malware popping up and infecting people’s macs, and the articles went on to state that the Apple customer service reps were told to hang up on people who called with regards to the malware.

Im a PC user and an average user, but who the fuck would click on one of those “your computer might be infected” popups, I mean the free smileys I no doubt click on but Im toooo smart for the other stuff.

i used pc for years, got a macbook pro in February, and i fucking love it.

We’ve been over this. You are not an average computer user. What’s your point about Apple not allowing cheap customized computers?

Mac users choose Mac because of the stability and great hardware-software integration.
Mac users choose Mac’s because they are ‘cool’. There is no advantage to using OS X over Windows - ANYMORE. Yes, there used to be, but it’s no longer the same story. This is why the change occurred - let’s not forget Apple only really grew in the past 6-7 years.

You haven’t used Win7, you can’t comment on it. I’ve been using all the OS’s for the past 6 years (on/off) - Win7 is every bit as good as OS X. The only advantage I see is Spaces - that’s it.

My point about Apple not allowing cheap customization? Well, they aren’t in that market. But, that’s fine - for them. They create new markets, and innovate. They can’t operate in a business and corporate environment because their business model doesn’t work there. This is why they’ve pulled out of that market.
says the guy profiting off of mac sales.

I switched over to an iMac a few years ago and I’ve been super happy with it.

The only drawback was when a fan went out, I had to haul the whole thing down there, since the monitor is integrated. They did replace the fan for about $15, and didn’t even charge me for service. I was surprised because my machine was maybe three years old. Nice.

I’ve never had a virus, or any other problems with it. Apple is more expensive, but they make good stuff.

I use a Mac and love the memory management. I do miss Windows 7 but have it installed as a virtual machine. I’m just too used to the UI of OS X now, but am comfortable using both.

Seriously, the mem management is perhaps the greatest advantage of Mac over PC. Stuff is handled and cached better. By far.

Completely forgot about that. This is true.

for day to day, i see no reason to spend the money on a mac when a 300 -400 dollar windows 7 laptop will do the job…thats what i push most of my friends towards when they need a new computer…

if you do a lot of art (iron dwarf) or movie editing I can understand a mac

if you do heave science related stuff or are a doctor, a pc is basically required (if i have to duel boot i dont see a point)…

That said, i love my ipad… my iphone, not so much…

What can I say? I thought it would be a worthy investment considering how infatuated some people are with the company.

They ripped everyone off today with their latest iOS update, and single-handedly killed BlackBerry with iMessenger.

Yeah, I love how they ripped Android notifications. I mean, I wouldn’t expect a serious breakthrough in how that stuff is handled–KISS, right?–but watch people think this was Apple’s creation.

I bet Apple will sue Google at some point in the future for “copying” iOS notifications.

And the comparison to XBL was retarded. “Only” 30 million subscribers? You’re comparing a niche market–console gaming–to the smartphone market, something which is almost ubiquitous by comparison to consoles?

The fact that Apple won’t allow 3rd party SSDs to be installed in their laptops is ridiculous. I need to throw in an Intel 320 SSD (300 GB) and I shouldn’t have to use the kext hack to get the OS to recognize the TRIM command on a non-Apple SSD.

EDIT:

One thing that kills me about Macs is the mouse cursor acceleration curves for the X and Y axes. I thought it was just me, but apparently a LOT of designers are left dumbfounded by Apple’s implementation. A solid laser mouse has PERFECT tracking in Windows, but it feels “off” on a Mac. There are 3rd party apps that attempt to correct this but it’s still not the same.

Oh yeah, and I apparently type so goddamn fast on a Mac that the characters don’t all show up, as if only 90% of them register sometimes. The cursor and refresh rate on a PC is much, much faster. I think I read that this is due to Apple’s use of Quartz rendering.

Re: Mem management…2 GB on a Mac is like 4 GB on a PC for me. I know that’s way oversimplifying it, but I mean Macs make much better use of memory. Yes, Macs DO crash, just as CHROME crashes (some fool in class was trying to tell me that Chrome “won’t crash, dude, was designed like that!”…yeah, you just don’t have 30 tabs open per each of your 4 windows spread across two workspaces. Fucking laymen.

Basically, I prefer inputs (mouse, keyboard) on a PC, but mem management on a Mac.

MAC: Hello I’m a mac
PC: And I’m a pc
MAC: hey what are you doing there, pc?
PC: oh, just playing some video games
MAC: Which ones?
PC: Oh you know… ALL OF THEM!
