Hey everyone. I used to feel my diet was very good until the other day when I read somewhere on here that lunch meat is not all that good. Basically everyday I have a loose-meat sandwich for lunch. Now, I figure it isn’t really that bad for you but I was wondering what would be better. So I guess I want to know what others eat for lunch.
Thanks
If someone tells me that my turkey deli sandwich on whole wheat with mustard is bad, then i am also screwed… i eat that every day…
I buy the freshly cut turkey though, not Oscar Meyer style
The problem with lunch meat is all the additives, unless you are buying super high quality organic clean meat. Nitrites, nitrates, sugar, sodium, preservatives, artificial color, etc. I think in a pinch there are much worse choices, but it isn’t the best choice day in and day out.
I usually try to cook for most of the week on Sunday evening. In the morning or the night before I throw something (a roast or a chicken) in the crockpot, and marinate some chicken breasts. Then on sunday, cook up the CB’s along with some burger patties (turkey burger with a little bit of chicken or turkey italian sausage mixed in is really tasty), sometimes meatballs, some kind of fish. I try to do enough to last through wednesday then it’s tuna or egg salad towards the end of the week.
This way I have a bunch of good cooked meat that lasts for most of the week and we aren’t eating a bunch of processed crap. If the sandwich format is a matter of convenience, there are a thousand different sauces you can use, throw a little in a whole wheat bread, pita, or tortilla, some of your good meat, and some fresh veggies and you are good to go. There are a thousand different variations.

Often times, when people refer to ‘lunchmeat’, they’re refering more to salami, and bologna, and such. . . the processed and high fat stuff.
Eating lean sliced ham, roast beef, or turkey is pretty healthy, and a far cry better than a lot of what’s out there.
Lunch meat is usually created from the scrapings and offal left on the meatworks floor…not to mention the preservatives and other shit put it it. It definitely isn’t a ‘whole food’. But it does contain some protein and like most things it won’t kill you if you only have it occasionally.
Sabrina is right! And oh, so hot too!
Lunch meats can be used sparingly, but I wouldn’t eat them everyday (I know, I used to!). Also, be sure to get the fresh stuff from the deli, never buy the prepackaged crap. BoarsHead makes some good deli meats and cheeses with less (or no) additives and preservatives.
If you want some other choices but don’t want to cook all your meals in one day (I never do that), then here are a few suggestions:
Try cutting back on lunch meat to just a few days each week.
Try a few tuna sandwiches (1-3 times is plenty - you have to watch out for that mercury).
Cook an extra plate of food when you make dinner and save it for one of your meals the next day (I do this all the time).
Try other meal ideas such as, 1) Cottage cheese + fruit, 2) Protein shake + raw nuts, 3) Boiled eggs + cheese, 4) Protein shake + fruit or peanut butter, etc.
You can come up with alternatives that are quick and easy to prepare. Making extra food when you cook dinner is one of the easiest ways to do it. I always have a prepared meal that I can pop into the microwave each day.
I do the same as sabrina… Every Sunday I grill about 6 chicken breast. I grab some prepackaged lettuce from the grocery store, cut my grilled chicken up and wa-la… Grilled chicken salad. I may add some pumpkin seeds to the salad and for dressing I take 1 tbs of flax oil and 1 tbs of italian dressing. Not to bad and way healthy… At least I think so.
Hope that helps… Thanks for the other suggestions…
