Low Total Test with Normal Free Test?

Hey Guys, kind of like a post I saw earlier, I was having a physical done and I had the doc run my Test, dhea-s, and estradiol. I’m nearly 37 and am about 20% BF. Here were the results:

Total Testosterone: 276 (250-1100 normal)
Free Testosterone: 64.6 (35.0-155.0 normal)
Free Percent Test: 2.34 High(1.50-2.20% normal)

Estradiol: 41 (13-54 normal)

DHEA-S: 205 (110-370 normal)

I’m not having any terrible symptoms, but I feel like my recovery and strength gains have been slowing down. I also snore, so I’m looking into sleep apnea, but I’m not sure if I have it.

So my questions are the following:

  1. Is it common to have test on the low end, but free test in the mid range?
  2. Would it be worth it to start HRT now or would it be better to take a different route ie arimadex, hcg, or some other technique?
  3. I can’t really afford to pay for a lot of test, but is there anything else that I really need to get checked?
  4. If I have sleep apnea, how likely is it that fixing it will help these numbers?

I have read through the stickies, but I’m sure I missed some stuff (there is a lot of info)

Thanks for any input/analysis/opinions!

Well, after reading some other cases on here, I guess this is pretty common to have low total test and enough free test to function well enough at sub optimum levels.

I have a take home apnea tester, so I guess we will see what it has to say. I’m guessing it will come back normal enough to not treat, but abnormal enough to fuck things up, kind of like almost out of range testosterone.

You would do better with less E2 using Arimidex/anastrozole. Otherwise, not enough data here.

Yeah, I didn’t have the complete battery of test recommended in the stickies run because I originally went in for a standard physical. I mentioned to the doc that I wasn’t recovering or making gains like usual so he did his standard “low T” test. I also asked for a full thyroid panel on my follow up, but since my TSH was normal on my CBC he didn’t think it would be necessary.

I’m going to try to get the full thyroid panel (TSH, T3, T4, Active T3, Active T4, and Rev T3), FSH, and LH next go round, if I can talk the doc into it. Hopefully that and the sleep apnea test will shed some light on things.

I was really just curious if anyone else had such low T, with only mild symptoms and if anyone had their low T get back up to normal after treating sleep apnea.

There are no hard and fast answers to those questions.

Some are low T types and when T looks low for them it is not a major change. The same levels are horrible for guys who have had naturally high levels of T.

After reading one of the other threads I’ve been taking my temperature on waking and after lunch. My waking temp has been 96.5, 96.3, 96.2, 96.7. My afternoon temp has been around 97.8 I’m guessing that is a little low. My TSH was 1.32 (0.34-5.60 normal) on my CBC but I think a full thyroid panel is in order.

Would be good to see if someone can make that thermo register 98.6

I picked up a new alcohol thermometer and I’m still looking pretty low. Morning temps of 96.9 and 97.0 so far… My temp right now is 97.8

Could my thyroid be that messed up without having significant symptoms? So far all my symptoms are vague. I don’t feel completely shitty, I just don’t feel like I’m at 100%

I also got the results from my apnea test today. Apparently I rated high enough to be outside the normal range, but not high enough to qualify for a sleep study automatically (I still need to talk to my doc)

Awesome…

Ask your doc for trial of low dose thyroid hormone. You will be watching to get 98.6 during the day and close to 97.8 waking. With multiple problems like this, you should correct the thyroid problem first.

E2: any sign of gyno?

Possibly some gyno… my body fat is a little higher than normal, so it’s hard for me to tell. My nipples don’t hurt or feel swollen, but my chest is a little extra fatty in that area compared to normal.

I hate to ask this, but I’m studying for a bunch of science exams next week and working, do you have a link to any info or protocol for using a low dose thyroid to treat low body temp? My doc is pretty cool, if I bring in some research he will usually hook a brother up. I read something on wilsons syndrom a while ago, but I couldn’t find much on PubMed.

I don’t know if this is relevant, but I took adderall for about two years and stopped in 2009. It was a low dose, but I wonder if that jacked something up.

And I though your post were fun to read before I needed help! Thanks KSman…

Your doc will prescribe low dose tablets and you will work to find what amount improves waking body temp mid day body temp and observing how you feel. Then you can report your findings to your doc.

And you need to be using iodized salt, not sea salt or kosher salt.
