I maybe moving to the Shreveport area of Louisiana soon and was wondering if anyone else lives in that area or knows a little something about it. I’m wondering about good gyms to join, quality of life, nice places to live etc… Thanks.
I went there once to interview for PA school at LSUHSC. From the area that I did see, it was nice, but I here from other people that it sucks up there. The best city here in Louisiana is Lafayette.
That’s actually pretty close to where I might be headed also. Can you elaborate on what people thought was so bad about it? Is it a high crime area or are the streets really polluted? Why did people say it sucks?
Also you said you thought it was nice. Was the hospital nice, how about the surrounding areas? Is it high rent or moderate? Also, where do some people say is a good place to live?
Sorry, for all the questions but I won’t have a chance to visit before I go and am trying to gather as much infoas possible. Thanks.
I grew up in Shreveport. All of my family except me still lives there. The best places to live are in southeast part of town, around Ellerbe road. Also, east of the Red river, in Bossier City, there are some very nice areas. They have great new casinos and river front entertainment now, much different than when I was a kid in the 70’s. I can’t tell you much about gyms, as I only visit there now.
The people that I have spoken to said that is a very boring place to live if you want a nightlife. I have also heard that there is a lot of gang activity in tha hood. From what I saw of the hospital it’s nice, but it is old. As far as a nice place to live, I’ll give you my opinion (it’s not to politically correct). I am a cajun. To me, north Louisiana (from around Alexandria up) is all rednecks; this isn’t home to me. For people in other parts of the bible belt, they probably would like it. Out west is the Lake Charles area. These are folks that can’t make up their mind whether they want to be from Texas or Louisisana. This area is also boring. Then there is the Baton Rouge area. The only thing good here is LSU, which I personally worship. And last and least is the New Orleans area. I would rather eat a bowl of crap than live in that disgusting city! Acadiana (the cajun area), mainly Lafatette, has the best food, the nicest people, the best nightlife, and I garauntee the best looking girls you will ever lay your eyes on. Hope this helps.
The New Orleans area is not that bad.I don’t live in New Orleans, but close enough. And how can you say that Lafayette has a better nightlife and better cooking. New Orleans is famous for both.
The Northshore, where I live is really nice and only 1/2 hour from the city. Two good gyms, clean, no crime really. Great for raising a family, not as great if your 19(but still pretty damn good).
Maybe I was a bit over the top. New Orleans does have some good restaraunts if you know where to go, but most not all of the places around the quarter are tourist places and are not authentic. Same thing with most of the night clubs in the quarter. In fact, they all suck! However, there are some nice areas around the city, but the city itself is dirty and gross!
Hey thanks for the info. What areas would one look for in the northshore? I want to use mapquest to see how far it would be from the health sciences center, I will be working near. And t-doc talked about Ellerbe road. Any thoughts on that? Thanks guys I really appreciate all of your help.
Bill,
I guess I can comment on the Shreveport area since I’ve lived here close to 45 years now. I’ve traveled around the country to some of the largest cities attending professional meetings and had many opportunities to leave Shreveport but never did. Guess I like it OK. Here’s the deal.
Some people like it. Some people think it sucks. Specifics: Night life is lame compared to “big” city night life if you’re into the bar scene (I’m not since I spend my time in the gym). There are five river boat casinos if you like to like to lose your money. The casinos bring in “high end” entertainment (Kid Rock, Creed, Allen Jackson, Don Henley, etc). Some say the casinos have the best food in town. We have a “minor league” hockey team–Mudbugs. There are lots of chain restaurants. There some high end restaurants that are decent. People are probably more friendly than those you would meet in “big” cities. Southeast Shreveport is growing and is a nice place to live. Azalea Gardens around Ellerbe Rd is nice. Cross Lake area is nice but expensive. Yes, Cross Lake is a real lake! In fact there are several lakes within a short distance of Shreveport if you’re a sportsman. Dallas is three hours drive west of Shreveport if you have an itch for the big city life that needs to be “scratched” on weekends. New Orleans is five hours drive south of Shreveport
if you want a taste of the cajun tradition. I’d swear if there was a civil war in Louisiana (North vs South), Shreveport and would succeed to Texas and the area south of Alexandria would become “independent”. Big difference between North and South Louisiana.
There’s lots of gyms to chose from in the area. You have the Health and Fitness centers associated with hospitals. There are a few hardcore gyms were BBs and powerlifters train. And you have a few commercial gyms that are constantly competing for new members. You might try checking out the Shreveport/Bossier web site on the internet for additional information. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the great info. If you don’t mind a couple more questions: If you will be a student/work at the LSHC are there good apartements around that area? And how “clean” is the area…i.e. is there much crime? Thanks again). Do most people drive to Dallas, or is their a train etc…as I would probably want to visit every other month or so. Thanks again.
Good apts around LSUHC? Good is relative to your taste and bank account. You probably can find “cheap” duplex type apts near the area but the neighborhood will not be so great. ShireWood Apts on Dudley Drive are close to LSUHC. I lived there over 20 years ago and they were decent then. Not sure about them now.
How “clean” is the area? I work at the community Blood Center. We were located across the street from LSUHC for years until we moved to a new location. The neighborhood around LSU is not good and not that clean. There has been crime in the area at times. I have friends who are students in Medical school and friends who work at the hospital. None have been victims of crime in the area. You just need to be aware.
Most people drive to Dallas. No trains.
I’ve driven to Dallas many times (back and forth on the same day at times). Easy drive. Takes about 3 hours to get there.
