Drink water and eat plenty protien (shakes in your case) and iron rich foods (though the supplement the doctor put you on will have to do for now). Eat good complex carbs too such as mashed sweet potato. Your body will fix it self.
Right now your bone marrow is pumping out new RBCs to fix the low H+H but more then likely you are not going to feel like yourself for a good 1-3 mnths at most. If your body has what it needs though it should be closer to 1 mnth though. Good luck.
well, i am glad to see you alive, I hope your family/roomates/pets were just as lucky. As for the crackhead, i hope he was the one with the not so happy ending
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO REPLIED WITH USEFUL INFORMATION. I AM FOREVER GRATEFUL.
I had my count checked 3 days after (last Friday) and it was an 8.5, a slight drop, but I feel great this week, 8 days later. Doubled my iron dose and am getting plenty of water and 300g/protein a day from shakes and anything I can blend.
I see the oral surgeon tomorrow for a final synopsis and I’m getting my blood count re-checked on Monday.
I get mild headaches when I stay inactive for too long so I’ve done a couple light bodyweight circuits to get the blood moving and the headaches go away. I feel ten times better just one week later, but I really miss whole foods. Would have been a great time to start the V-Diet, ha ha ha (trying to stay positive here).
Irony of the whole situation; my female training partner is battling Hashemoto’s (an autoimmune desease like what was mentioned in a post above) and being Anemic and now I know exactly what she’s going thru.
I am staying positive and realize that everything happens for a reason. Taking a step back and realizing there are more important things in life than a 400 lb dead lift (a goal I reached a week before this happened) and a 300 lb bench press (something I have yet to accomplish). It’s quite humbling and now I look forward to restructuring my program and recovering to full health, in time.
Thank you again to everyone who cared enough to post an informative and knowledgable reply.
as low as the risks are for viral infection, you don’t want a blood transfusion unless you are going to die
your doc is not going to give you epogen for a count of 9. and not just because it cost $250 a dose. your kidneys already make enough of it to get you back to normal with adequate iron (which is why he started you on that but you’d do just as fine with red meat)
I’d stay with the light workouts you described earlier. They work for your headaches and shouldn’t tax your body too much. For what it’s worth, patience and rest are the most important things to focus on. Your kidneys will have already upped their normal erythropoetin production to stimulate your bone marrow’s red cell production. You’ve probably already tapped out your spleen’s red blood cell reserve at this point as well, so be prepared to see a slower rise in your hemoglobin and hematocrit counts.
You’ll also want to make sure that you’re not skimping on your salt and other electrolytes at this point. I’m not saying to go crazy with the salt shaker. Just make sure that if you were stingy with salt before, you may want to change that. The electrolytes will help you hold your water and raise your total blood volume. Your hematocrit (%of red blood cells versus total fluid) will still be low, but this will serve as another stimulus for your kidneys to up the natural production of EPO.

I lost my spleen when I was 6 yr old in an accident. You mentioned the spleen’s red blood cell reserve. Not having one, how will that affect things?
