I just finished massage school this pasy May and looking relocate back to that Mainland. I do structual intergration, which is like total body ART. Kauai just is not fun anymore. So am looking for fellow T-men and T-vixens input. Places that have good gyms and Asian people is big plus too.
Toronto has half a million Asian people and tons of top notch gyms. It also has 4 distinct seasons, blahblahblah…
Hey, weren’t you at one time, considering Portland, Oregon?
Basically any city on the West Coast sounds like it would fit your bill. I lived in SoCal for 7 years, and love San Diego and Orange County – those areas have great gyms, lots of Asians, and lots of people who would get chiropractic-type care. As an added plus, if you’re coming in from Hawaii, it wouldn’t even seem that expensive.
Unfortunately I cannot recommend any such a place as you described. I can only say that you find it in north florida/south georgia. If you don’t mind asking, what is wrong with living in Hawaii, I was considering getting a job and moving over there… Thanks.
Um…north florida/south georgia? I didn’t realize that this area had ANY asians to speak of, apart from those whose car might have broken down while moving from one place to another. San Francisco, San Diego (don’t bother with L.A., it’s a freakin’ dump), Portland, Oregon, or Seattle, Washington would be really nice choices. I’d also reccomend Toronto, Montreal, and/or Vancouver, Canada, but it would be a pain in the ass to go through all that change of citizenship/permanent residency bullshit…besides, the Canadian economy isn’t exactly hot right now, though I think it’ll turn around within 2 years…
How about Hiroshima? Some pretty good gyms, and a fair number of Asians…
Well Nick, Kauai itself is pretty dead. The ratio of men to women is like 5-1. Also it is freaking expensive to live here, hence I have to live with the parents to make a go, or work 60-80 hrs a week.
How is the job market for bodyworkers in the Portland area? I do structual intergration, which like Rolfing and ART, not that light sweedish feel good type. Also what else is there to do besides train, drink beer and read books.
Canada might be to cold, as I was born and raised in Hawaii. Also you said that you are Chinese. I am half Japanese, I imagine that there is sizable Japanese population as well.
Sorry, that was a typo. I meant that there is no asian people where I live (north fl). Elegua is absolutely right, the only asians here are the few college students.
Ahh, let me enlighten you about Portland. While I do not complain about the training, drinking beer and reading books part - Portland is also right smack in the middle of mountains (skiing) and the ocean (beaches). Portland also has a wonderful network of bike lanes, paths, so if you NEVER want to get a car and just want to bike it - you can. I also walk to work (we live on SE Hawthorne, so I cross over the Hawthorne bridge to downtown -20-30 minute walk - very niiiiiiiice on sunny mornings). Portland also has a great public transportation system, consisting of buses, light rail and a trolly. Also, there is a pretty kewl Japanese Garden as well as the now two year old Chinese Garden (largest one in N. America). And when Ko and I get a urge to go north, we just hope onto Amtrak for a 3 hour ride to Seattle ($36-40 RT).
I'm sure Ko will tell you about the fishing that can be done around here, too. OH, and he's the one to also talk about ART. Maybe he can refer you to his ART guy who can better answer your question. Would that be cool?
There are only about 4-5 ART praticioners in town, and the guy I go to is always booked solid. So I imagine there is a demand for what you do. As far as what there is to do, it depends on what you like to do. Are you an outdoorsman? There is hunting, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, skiing etc. However,if sunny weather is what you are after, its the wrong place to be. There is a large asian community, and there seems to be alot of Hawaians her as well.
Dude I don’t know where you’ve been hiding but our(Canadian) economy is absolutely smokin’. Big numbers in Job creation, two record months housing sales in T.O… Housing selling for $10-15k more than asking. Even the B.C. economy is bouncing back. Bank Of Canada is contemplating raising prime to cool things off. Somehow we have managed not to catch our giant southern cousins’ cold.
Thanks to all that have replied. I also forgot, how is the single scene in Portland. That would be the main reason to go back there, or anywhere. Kauai single scene sucks bad.
Single scene? Don’t think Ko or I would be a good source of info on the “scene.” What I can tell you is that there are plenty of bars in PDX. Not sure how late the bars stay open in Hawaii, but here, closing time is anywhere from 1AM to 2:30AM and the “after hours” is til 4:30AM at a few joints. There are brew pubs a plenty a few late, late, night espresso/coffee bars. You’ve got Portland State University downtown (where I work) - and the average age of a student here is 26 (with a several in the population that are in the 30’s). From what I have seen is that the “singles scene” here is growing.
As Ko said, there is a large Hawaiian population as well. As a matter of fact a really good friend of mine moved here from Hawaii (she's half French and Korean). And I KNOW I've mentioned "NoHo's Hawaiian Cafe" - where you can order HUGE portions of Korean barbecue beef, chicken - among other things. Ah, we like Noho's. :-) There's also a great place here called "Just Be, Inc" where they sell Gundam, Ultraman and other Japanese action figures and toys. Go to www.justbetoys.com - they just moved to a larger locale. Ko likes to go in and reminesce about his childhood toys that he had (and STILL has). Plus, there is a pretty good art scene here (if you like art). A really good small independent movie scene (if you like cinema) - lots of little small old theaters that have been restored. Also can't forget the Theater/Pub combos. There's one by us: a old theater restored that shows movies, and also serves beer, wine and pizza. There's also a old grade school that has been converted into a theater, restaurant, pub, bar thingy, the "Kennedy School".
And the best thing about Portland? Ko and I live here: so you'd already know a few people. :-)
That is true, I would know two more people in Oregon. And both hapa to boot. I just have to get the logistics taken of too move. Also I think I want to enjoy one more Hawaiian winter, before taking on those dark, cold days and nights again. I’ll shoot for April or May. Sayaonara, Boku no tomodachi.
…kewl. We’d be one big Hapa Family…hee hee. Couldn’t resist. Had to say it. So there. I know, I know groan. ![]()
