Looking for Gritty, Hardhitting Movies

Wow almost to the end of page two and no one has mentioned Requiem for a Dream? Staying on the heroin theme, Trainspotting is another. Pi would be another suggestion, actually most of Aronofsky’s movies are pretty gritty. A Clockwork Orange is always a classic.

The Road. Pretty depressing.

Unthinkable. Not really gritty but kind of gut wrenching.

Maybe a bit too mainstream to be included in this thread, but I thought “Mystic River” was pretty damn gritty.

x2

Man Bites Dog

This film is about a serial killer who goes about his business while being filmed by a camera crew - documentary style!

Falling Down with Michael Douglas.

Wow,this looks very interesting. Thanks for sharing!

Serbian Film

I dare you to watch it.

“Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead”

Not hardcore, crazy, gritty, but somewhat unsettling, in that perverse, fucked up, enjoyable way.

Irreversible is the only movie I ever saw that makes me sick… It’s really fucked up.
Did you know… during the scene where the two guys look in The Rectum for the rapist that the director knowingly put in a sound which emitted a low frequency - Something like 55 hz or something. Whatever it is is actually scientifically proven to cause nausea and feelings of dread when heard. Combine that with the cinematography and what have you, and voila. Damn good movie.
Ha thats pretty interesting

That was by far the worst scene in the movie. That fire extinguisher scene is brutal. Far worse than the rape scene. TBH I think you become desensitized a few minutes into the rape scene. The beautiful thing about irreversible is the structure of the film. Total grittiness that moves smoothly into bliss. Gaspar Noeis an excellent director. He exploits the medium of cinema to devestating effect. He’s just released Into The Void which I MUST SEE!

Lots of other good suggestions in the thread.

Another one that is a guilty pleasure for me is The Untold Story. It’s a CAT III film from the golden age of Hong Kong Cinema. It stars Anthony Wong who IMO is one of the best actors on the planet. He looks and acts completely different in every film he stars in. Smooth but violent in Hard Boiled then depraved and psycopathic in The Untold Story. Unlike Brad Pitt for example who pretty much plays Brad Pitt in every fucking movie he stars in.

DAMN YOU SAID HARD BOILED. May I offer up THE KILLER. One of the most jacked up endings of a movie I have ever seen.
