Looking For Advice

Zeb,

Yes there are people in my club during 0000-0400. There is not a lot but thats whats nice about it. I have no idea what it’s like working 9-5 mon thru friday, never have. I think for some of us in T-nation (or anyone for that matter) just can’t make it to the gym that caters to a 9-5 lifestyle. I live in the Twin Cities (go Vikes) and the club I belong to is one of the more expensive. Would I rather go to a privatley owned gym? Something a little more hardcore? More affordable? definatley. http://www.loscampeonesgym.com/index.htm this is where I used to go. I loved that place but I was wasting money not being able to get there during their tight hours.
There would probably be nights (at first) where no one will be in the gym, but I bet people would buy a membership just for the sole purpose of having the option to go 24 hours a day.

Good point. Since it will probably mean adding only one staff member during those early hours of the morning I think it’s a great idea.

I thank you.

I have memberships in three gyms right now. Two Gold’s gyms with wonderful equipment. But, I prefer to do most of my work at a small neighborhood gym.

They have a very good selection of newer cardio equipment including rowing machines, steppers, eliptical trainers, a couple of those moving stair machines, and a climber. I particularly like that they have good classes that are offered throughout the day (cycle, abs, iron grip, step, kick boxing, and yoga)…which makes it possible to hit one when convenient: 5:45 AM, 9:30 AM, 12:30 PM, 5:15 PM, and 6:30 PM. Gold’s only offers 6:15 AM and 5:15 PM, which makes them very difficult for me to get there.

The weight room is small, but adequately stocked. They have a squat rack, but I would really like a safety cage, and when I want to really go heavy, I end up at Golds to use their cage, but they only have one, and it is a popular piece of equipment. There is at lease one of most pieces of equipment, and the more popular weight machines there are two. The free weights are along two walls…one set up for barbells and the other wall holds DB that go up to 120#.

They offer three free sessions with a trainer or someone qualified to walk you through the proper use of the equipment, which is at least a start.

What I most like about my “small” neighborhood gym is the friendliness and cleanliness. There are just small touches that make it convenient. First, they supply towels (unlimited supply, with several places where towels are stacked that you can just grab a clean one, if you need to). They provide digital locker keys that you can set yourself, they have a storage area where you can hand over your car keys when you arrive and they will hold them for you…often times I’ll leave my valuables in the trunk of my car, grab my water, leave my keys at the front desk, and I’m unencumbered. One other thing that I like a lot, but I’m not sure how many use it, is they have bike storage lockers for 4 or 5 bikes. You can store your bike or rollerblades, and it encourages you to ride or blade to workout. Also, they have a flat shelf along one wall of mirrors about two feet off the ground and about 2 feet deep. It takes up floor space, but it’s very convenient for people who want to keep a bag with them…a place to set it out of the way.

They have a kids room with supervised child care. I don’t have the need any longer for this service, but I think it’s $25 a month, opened from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

The music stinks, controlled by the head trainer (an ego problem there), but most of us serious trainees ignore him, and if we need, bring our own music players.

Another important feature is that they have cameras on the parking lot. Gyms are a place that thieves like to hit. They know you are going to be a while, and there are a lot of breakins in gym parking lots…looking for valuables and garage door openers. I feel a lot safer knowing the cameras are there.

More outstanding ideas! However, I wonder if the free towels get stolen often?

Thanks for your thoughts.

I don't really think, in my opinion that free towel service would reaaly sell someone on a membership. Especially, if everything else about the gym is in place.

Perhaps, but the extras can mean so much to people. It also gives them the idea that you are not out to grab their last dime. Pampering is not a bad thing if done in the right way.

I was curious about this “open 24 hours” phenomenon. I wonder if it’s worth it? Are people actually training between 12midnight and 4am?[/quote]

I belong to a chain called 24-Hour Fitness and there are people there at all hours of the night. The ones there after midnight just got off work.

sorry if this has been mentioned, but i think a platform or two for the olympic lifts and their variations would be awesome.I’m not sure how “normal” of a request that is, but i gaurantee it’d be of great value to your gym and it’s members. If you could add bumper plates they would make it that much cooler.
And,Zeb, I know you consider the bench an “EVIL” exercise [wink, wink], but you’ve got to get a few in there, just kick em towards the back or something. Also, if you were to provide belts where you can attach weight that would be great, my gym doesn’t, I bought then brought my own [$50] and it was stolen when I went to take a piss.Just some ideas.

True, I do like the free towels at my gym. Here’s a thought. You know towels are gonna “disappear”. So in anticipation of this happening. factor into your finances, That you will need to replenish the towel supply every so often. Also I’m sure you already realize that these towels are not going to clean and dry on their own. Not only will you need a commecial sized washer and dryer plus detergent, but have the available staff to operate the machines fold towels etc. Then there is the issue if a machine breaks down, it will cost you to get a repair man out there to fix it.

Boy who'da thunk all those hours of playing "Theme Park: Roller Coaster" would pay off?
  1. Keep all the machines well-greased.

–Working out on any cable machine where the cables get caught really sucks.

  1. For deadlifters:

An old gym I used to go to had a crow-bar type of contraption for easily lifting the olympic bar a few inches off the floor to facilitate sliding the 45s on and off quickly and evenly. I’ve yet to see this tool at another gym.

I guess that Phenomenon is really taking hold!

Thanks for the info.

WhiteFlash:

Ha ha, I have stated my opinion of the flat Bench Press a few times huh? Okay, with that said I will still have to have flat benches, I know when I have to go with the flow…

“Have belts where you attatch weight.” Sorry, what is that you mean?

I think it’s a matter of how many of the amenities that you can “give” away and still make it work. It’s a balancing act.

My son plays roller coaster tycoon and I think it’s a great game.

This is a long stretch but have a “library” where you could check out books/DVDs. Make sure you hold a credit card number “hostage” though.

Like a dip belt, where there is a detachable chain so you can slide plates or db’s onto. just get a few of them and mark them so you know they’re yours and not your customers.

Without a doubt the most innovative idea I have seen yet!

Ahh! I should have realized that…duh. Thank’s for the explanation.

Just took a DVD from my gym

24hrs for free.

Percolated coffee = free,

Headphones for cardio theatre - free

Sweat towel (not shower) free - cleverest in my opinion!

Also get a free backpack and waterbottle.

I love all this.

May I ask how much the monthly dues are to belong to your Gym? It does sound like a nice place.
