DEAD COMMIES FTW.

I read through some of the bios of the other soldiers mentioned in this thread, and nobody even comes close to “The White Death” in terms of general badassery. They carpet bombed the crazy fucker and he came out unscathed!

That Canadian sniper was also a reservist I believe. He got hassled by customs going home when he came through the States too, that must have sucked. As push said it was not a one shot kill, but at that range it makes sense he had to walk his shot onto the hajji.

The crazy shot in Afghanistan that was mentioned earlier, if its the one I’m thinking of I saw on the history channel was incredibly impressive. Guy was providing overwatch for his unit, which got ambushed in a town, and hit a dude right around a mile away, impressive stuff. He also routed the ambushers. Again, that is if its the one I am thinking of.

I’ve never seen him talked about on t.v., which is a shame, but Leonard Pehgamagabow. Native Canadian sniper with the Algonquin Regiment of the Canadian Army in WWI. 378 kills in France, possibly considerably more. Plus an extraordinary scout.

Routinely penetrated German trench lines and would go into No Man’s Land to bring in lost night patrols when he wasn’t on duty. Decorated several times, came home and became an important leader in the Native rights movement. Extraordinary man.

Or Major Hugh Hesketh Pritchard - an explorer, hunter and author (Teddy Roosevelt wrote him fan mail) the father of sniping as a military discipline. Developed the concept during WWI, got it through the British Army’s bureaucracy, and created the Sniping, Observation & Scouting schools that moved around and trained sniper sections throughout the British and Imperial forces during the war.

Sorry. Nothing to do with the original question. Sniping history is one of my things.

Search for the Russian White Death or something like that

i’m pretty sure it’s on article on cracked.com about the TOP 10 baddest MOFOS to ever step in the world.

Well one shot one kill refers to Hathcock, no one else. The canadians shot in afghan was not one shot one kill as you mentioned.

Canadian sniper is Robert Furlong:

While the Americans use the Barret 50 cal, we use the McMillan Tac 50 cal.

Russian? Quite the opposite. Know your history and don’t be so ignorant.

As long as we’re talking about killing communists, how about doing that in 3 different armies? This is a true soldier right here:

There’s a book I read that had stories about him…called “One Shot One Kill.”
As a former Marine sniper and current historian, I will say that Hathcock contributed tremendously to the craft, and it is just that, a craft. Not to be harsh but for some of you it appears it is a dick waving contest. Shooting skill is only part of the equation and in the case of Hathcock and the Finnish gentleman, clearly the overall success is attributable to having the entire skill set , not being “a bad ass”. Real life, not a movie or a fantasy. Just as an aside, the Soviets had a couple of platoons of female snipers who had very commendable records by wars end.

Ok so awhile back there was a thread on here discussing real life Rambo type guys in history. Now I have exhausted the search engine trying to find it and cant.

What im looking for is an article about a guy who single handedly took out and scared off entire units in what I think was the second world war but might have been the first. He was like a regular farmer and would just hide in the woods popping guys off.
Alvin York, WWI?

an American soldier who is renowned as a World War I hero.[1] He was awarded the Medal of Honor for leading an attack on a German machine gun nest, taking 32 machine guns, killing 28 German soldiers and capturing 132 others.

York’s story was somewhat embellished (not by York), but remains however an extremely heroic act. Audie Murphy is simply a legend, and like York was very matter of fact and humble about his accomplishments. He also weighed about 125 ibs,at maybe 5’5 (I mention that because sooner or later one of the numnut college students…errr posters on this site is going to go down that road. It inevitably seems to happen)

Agree with you 100%, not that I am, or have any experience in sniping. Just find it an interesting topic. Got any sources for the female snipers? I would like to read about them. The only famous Soviet sniper I have read much about is Vasiley during Stalingrad. Care to share what you think about Jack Couglin, can’t remember the name of his book, but it was pretty interesting and he mentions the actual skills involved in setting up a successful shot a few times.

Seriously,They should have a freaking statue of him in the capital. Truth be told, the whole Country of Finland is badass in that war. They didnt have the numbers like the Pinkos,They didnt have the indoctrine and will power of the Japanese, and they sure as hell didnt have the technology, the military prowess, and the awesome uniforms of the Germans…hell,on paper they weren’t even suppose to accomplish what they did. These guys were small in numbers and they were regular guys but they fought againts a overwhelming number and won! After that war,Finland should have been called “Winland”

York was a member of the 82nd Infantry division, later to be named the 82nd Airborne.

Murphy first tried to enlist in the Marines and for the paratroopers, but was told he was too small. So he joined the army and ended up in the 3rd ID, and went on to win the MOH.

Interestingly enough, he also went on to become somewhat of a film star after the war, even starring in a film about his own WWII heroics.

Any suggestions about a good book to start to learn more about snipers?

Honestly, you can’t go wrong with Hathcock’s One Shot, One Kill. It’s a classic.
My favorite recent book is Lone Survivor, by Marcus Luttrell. Doesn’t delve too deep into sniping, but it’s absolutley amazing the stuff this SEAL went through and survived in Afghanistan.

Here is a little article about the Army’s 3rd ID “Shadow Team.” One of their guys recently broke the record for longest shot with a 7.62 weapon. Something like 1300-1400 meters I think. Good shit.

Other than that, there are a ton of books related to snipers and sniping available. Just go to amazon.

I highly recommend it too.
I do as well.

Did any of you read about what happened with him after he got back? Not sure of the time frame, but apparently a bunch of kids killed his (and others) dog, as a prank or something. He followed them, drove them off the road and held them there until the police came. Wrong guy to fuck with
